Developing mentors and leaders in gulf gastroenterology: the gastroleaders framework.

INTRODUCTION: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) gastroenterology services are expanding, but published evidence on structured specialty-specific mentorship and leadership development remains uneven and is concentrated in a small number of countries. AREAS COVERED: This critical perspective distinguishes the proposed GastroLeaders leadership-and-mentorship intervention from clinical education and independent procedural accreditation. PubMed/MEDLINE was searched from inception through 31 August 2026 using terms for mentorship, leadership, gastroenterology training, hepatology, inflammatory bowel d

From Shame to Strength: How Mentors Can Help Mentees Navigate Shame.

Medical education's pursuit of excellence often inadvertently fosters a "hidden curriculum" of perfectionism and shame. This culture can transform adaptive striving into maladaptive perfectionism, where a fear of failure leads learners to view mistakes not as growth opportunities but as evidence of moral failings and personal inadequacy. When errors inevitably occur, the potential result is shame or an identity-focused belief that "I am bad." The resulting isolation and self-doubt potentially can lead to imposter syndrome, burnout, and depression. This paper explores the critical role of shame

Mothers and Mentors: Exploring Perinatal Addiction and Recovery Through Digital Storytelling.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a growing problem for pregnant and parenting women. Woman-to-woman peer support may positively influence perinatal outcomes but little is known about the impact of such support on the women who are providing support. The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of addiction in pregnancy, recovery, and subsequently serving as a peer mentor to other pregnant women with active SUD among women in recovery in a rural setting. We conducted one digital storytelling workshop with five women serving as peer mentors with lived experience of perinatal SUD. The

Does Natural Mentoring Matter? A Multilevel Meta-analysis on the Association Between Natural Mentoring and Youth Outcomes.

In this meta-analytic review, we examined the relation between natural mentoring and youth outcomes in four domains: academic and vocational functioning, social-emotional development, physical health, and psychosocial problems. Natural mentoring relationships are thought to foster positive youth development and buffer against the risks associated with the tumultuous years of adolescence. Two separate meta-analyses were conducted on the presence of a natural mentor and the quality of the natural mentoring relationship, including thirty studies from 1992 to present. The findings indicated that t

Why mentoring matters in a hypercompetitive world.

Professional service firms (PSFs), like so many other companies, are juggling the modern challenges of global competition, increased regulation, and rapid employee turnover. In a people-oriented industry, attrition has special import. DeLong and Gabarro, of Harvard Business School, along with former Morgan Stanley and Ernst & Young executive Lees, argue that a PSF can gain a much-needed competitive edge by renewing its focus on mentoring. The authors' in-depth interviews with professionals from more than 30 PSFs have yielded four principles for firms to heed as they rediscover this lost art. F

Becoming Bilingual in Science: What My Mentors Saw Before I Did.

Geriatric psychiatry, in particular, demands cross-disciplinary fluency because aging is at once biological, psychological, social, and structural. Effective mentorship, therefore, cultivates a kind of "bilingualism" in science--the ability to move across disciplinary languages while maintaining intellectual depth and authenticity. It anchors early-career scientists in their home discipline while intentionally exposing them to adjacent and even distant fields. When this occurs early in training (e.g., during the postdoctoral or K-award stage), it fosters careers defined by intellectual flexibi

Peer Mentors as Prison Volunteers: Building Bridges Between Institutions and Communities.

One creative way that Departments of Corrections offset costs is by relying on volunteers. Prison volunteers are a heterogeneous group, who provide various programs to incarcerated populations. One unique subset of prison volunteers are peer mentors, who are individuals who have experienced criminal justice interventions and have desisted from criminal activities. These mentors provide unique guidance to individuals who are currently incarcerated or are preparing for release. The current study analyzed responses from peer mentors (N = 51) and explored their motivations and experiences. Themati

Self-care and mentors to reduce stress and enhance administrative ability.

This article has considered two options available for nurses seeking career advancement in LTC. Orem's self-care model offers an approach to assist the DON to cope with stressors in the LTC setting through self-care. Mentoring also offers a strategy to assist the novice leader with professional growth. Mentoring is an emerging concept in nursing. Mentoring is of special significance in LTC because there is a shortage of DONs. Experienced DONs in LTC who have learned to handle the stresses that overwhelm the novice need to mentor younger DONs and others interested in a DON position. The use of

Pulmonary oxygen toxicity: investigation and mentoring.

At sea level oxygen is toxic to man when breathed for more than twenty-four hours at a percentage greater than about forty percent. Pulmonary pathology is the first manifestation in subjects with previously normal lungs. In patients with pre-existing lung disease the results are often additive. There is, however, great variation in response from subject to subject and between patients. Queen's Belfast and Harvard University Medical School have been the sites of seminal investigations. Mentoring at both universities is due to training at the University of Copenhagen.

Simulation and nurse-mentoring in a statewide nurse mentoring program in Bihar, India: diagnosis of postpartum hemorrhage and intrapartum asphyxia.

Background: Mentoring programs that include simulation, bedside mentoring, and didactic components are becoming increasingly popular to improve quality. These programs are designed with little evidence to inform the optimal composition of mentoring activities that would yield the greatest impact on provider skills and patient outcomes. We examined the association of number of maternal and neonatal emergency simulations performed with the diagnosis of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and intrapartum asphyxia in real patients. Methods: We used a prospective cohort and births were compared between- an

Supporting people leaving prisons during COVID-19: perspectives from peer health mentors.

PURPOSE: Currently, people leaving prisons face concurrent risks from the COVID-19 pandemic and the overdose public health emergency. The closure or reduction of community services people rely on after release such as treatment centres and shelters has exacerbated the risks of poor health outcomes and harms. This paper aims to learn from peer health mentors (PHM) about changes to their work during overlapping health emergencies, as well as barriers and opportunities to support people leaving prison in this context. A review of mentoring deaf and hard-of-hearing scholars.

Diversification of the scientific workforce usually focuses on recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities but often overlooks deaf and hard-of hearing (D/HH) persons. Usually classified as a disability group, such persons are often members of their own sociocultural linguistic minority and deserve unique support. For them, access to technical and social information is often hindered by communication- and/or language-centered barriers, but securing and using communication access services is just a start. Critical aspects of training D/HH scientists as p

The value of mentoring: a strategic approach to retention and recruitment.

The issues of recruitment, training, and retention of experienced nursing staff remains an ongoing business strategy of nursing service in many health care facilities. The implementation of a structured mentoring program recognizes the need to develop and maintain relationships between the new and the experienced nurses. The terms of mentor and mentee are defined within a structured orientation program, highlighting specific roles and responsibilities of each. The use of other staff as preceptors and resources is discussed as a mechanism to enhance diversity in skill and knowledge development.

Twenty-year experience with the Mentor bladder pacemaker.

Twenty years after placement of a Mentor bladder pacemaker, a 38-year-old woman with spina bifida cystica still has controlled detrusor contraction and complete bladder emptying. The varied treatment modalities for this difficult group of patients has included electronic bladder stimulation. Although no longer commonly used, electronic bladder stimulation has shown long-term efficiency in this patient.
