Biodegradation of pharmaceutical contaminants in wastewater using microbial consortia: Mechanisms, applications, and challenges.

Pharmaceuticals, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics, have been increasingly detected in wastewater and pose substantial ecological and public health concerns due to their persistence and bioactivity. Conventional treatment processes are often insufficient for their complete removal, highlighting the need for advanced bioremediation strategies. This review critically examines the mechanisms, applications, and challenges of microbial consortia for pharmaceutical biodegradation. It emphasizes their synergistic metabolic pathways, such as cross-feeding, co-metabolism,

Performance of low temperature Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) catalyzed by mixed bacterial consortia.

Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are a promising technology for treating wastewater in a sustainable manner. In potential applications, low temperatures substantially reduce MFC performance. To better understand the effect of temperature and particularly how bioanodes respond to changes in temperature, we investigated the current generation of mixed-culture and pure-culture MFCs at two low temperatures, 10°C and 5°C. The results implied that the mixed-culture MFC sustainably performed better than the pure-culture (Shewanella) MFC at 10°C, but the electrogenic activity of anodic bacteria was substan

Elevating Tetracycline Removal in Microbial Electrochemical Systems: Insights from Extracellular Electron Transfer and Rational Aggregation of Microbial Consortia.

In microbial electrochemical systems (MESs), the anode electroactive biofilm is crucial for mitigating the threat of tetracycline (TC) residue, a typical broad-spectrum antibiotic frequently found in the environment, to public health security. In this work, the Co3O4@PEDOT-CC anode was rationally designed and fabricated by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coating Co3O4 nanowires grown on carbon cloth, featuring it with hierarchical architecture and interfacial properties of excellent conductivity and biocompatibility. The Co3O4@PEDOT-CC exhibited a minimal charge-transfer resistance of

Development of novel microbial synthetic consortia for the production of antimicrobial fermentates containing caproate.

Short- and medium chain carboxylic acids (SCCA/MCCA) are natural antimicrobials produced by fermentation and chain elongation, but currently only a few SCCA/MCCA are used in food-related applications. With the aim to diversify the SCCA/MCCA profile of fermentates for biopreservation, we designed bioprocesses employing bacterial or multi-kingdom consortia to produce caproate-containing fermentates using a targeted cross-feeding strategy. We combined Limosilactobacillus reuteri, Clostridium kluyveri, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and quantified substrates utilization and metabolites. The antimic

Microbial consortia and their metabolic modulations as mechanisms of water deficit tolerance in strawberry plants.

INTRODUCTION: One effective and ecologically sustainable strategy that has emerged to enhance plant resilience to water deficits induced by drought stress is the application of plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM). Despite this progress, there remains a lack of clarity in identifying the most effective microbial consortia and understanding the nutritional and metabolic processes that contribute to the drought resilience of strawberry crops. METHODS: Two effective microbial consortia were selected based on previous data: CS1 (Claroideoglomus claroideum + Naganishia albida + Paraburkhol

Light-Driven C4 Biosynthesis from CO2 and H2O via Engineered Photocatalyst-Microbial Consortia.

The development of sustainable technologies for converting CO2 into value-added chemicals using solar energy remains a critical challenge. We presented a biohybrid system integrating Z-scheme photocatalysts with engineered microbial consortia for light-driven succinic acid production from CO2 and H2O without sacrificial agents. The system combined Escherichia coli biofilms expressing formate dehydrogenase for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction to formate with adaptively evolved Vibrio natriegens for formate upgrading to succinic acid. This configuration achieved 0.06 mM succinic acid in 6 h wi

AI-integrated metabolomics maps functional divergence of microbial consortia in field-grown maize.

The study provides actionable insights into modes of action of the three microbial biostimulants on maize plants under field conditions. The postulated framework indicates a divergence model involving (i) photoprotection, structural reinforcement, and defense priming, (ii) systemic metabolic reprograming for growth and defense, and (iii) hormonal signalling modulation for stress response. These insights offer a data-driven blueprint for the next generation of sustainable, effective, and field-ready bioformulations. Microbial consortia are currently recognized as a promising strategy for sustai

From Microbial Consortia to Ecosystem Resilience: The Integrative Roles of Holobionts in Stress Biology.

The holobiont paradigm, conceptualizing host-microbiome assemblages as functionally integrated entities, has fundamentally altered interpretations of adaptive responses to environmental pressures spanning multiple organizational levels. This review synthesizes the current knowledge on microbiome-host coevolution, focusing on three key aspects. First, it examines the evolutionary origins of holobionts from primordial microbial consortia. Second, it considers the mechanistic basis of microbiome-mediated stress resilience in plants and animals. Finally, it explores the ecological implications of

Harnessing the power of microbial consortia for the biodegradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Challenges and opportunities.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental pollutants that pose significant risks to human health and ecosystems owing to their widespread use and resistance to degradation. This study examines the potential of microbial consortia as a sustainable and effective strategy for biodegrading PFAS. It highlights how these complex communities interact with various PFAS, including perfluorocarboxylic acids, perfluorosulfonic acids, fluorotelomer alcohols, and fluorotelomer-based precursors. Despite the potential of microbial consortia, several challenges impede their appli

Trichloroethylene aerobic cometabolism by suspended and immobilized butane-growing microbial consortia: a kinetic study.

A kinetic study of butane uptake and trichloroethylene (TCE) aerobic cometabolism was conducted by two suspended-cell (15 and 30°C) and two attached-cell (15 and 30°C) consortia obtained from the indigenous biomass of a TCE-contaminated aquifer. The shift from suspended to attached cells resulted in an increase of butane (15 and 30°C) and TCE (15°C) biodegradation rates, and a significant decrease of butane inhibition on TCE biodegradation. The TCE 15°C maximum specific biodegradation rate was equal to 0.011 mg(TCE ) mg(protein)(-1) d(-1) with suspended cells and 0.021 mg(TCE) mg(protein)(-1)

Humus-gradient adaptive laboratory evolution remodels electroactive microbial consortia to achieve cold-resistant bioelectrogenesis.

Low-temperature conditions trigger continuous humus accumulation in substrates, inhibiting extracellular electron transfer and reducing electrogenesis efficiency, which limits the practical performance and engineering application of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs). Conventional physicochemical regulation strategies cannot fundamentally improve the intrinsic stress resistance of electroactive microbial consortia. Herein, a two-stage experimental workflow combining adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) domestication and subsequent CW-MFC inoculation was established to obtain mix

Cooperativity in microbial biotechnology: synthetic consortia as emerging metabolic engineering strategy for sustainable bioproduction.

Microbial cell factories play an important role in the sustainable production of chemicals used in several industries, including pharmaceutical, food, polymer, and energy. Biosynthesis of these desired chemicals typically occurs through complex or extended metabolic pathways via multiple enzymatic steps. However, introducing multiple heterologous genes into a single microbial strain often creates a significant metabolic burden, making the efficient production of target chemicals challenging. To overcome the limitations of monocultures, microbial consortia can be engineered to divide complex ca

Process-dependent inhibitory effects of zinc-based metal-organic frameworks on nitrifying microbial consortia.

Zinc-based metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOFs) are attractive for environmental applications; however, their impact on key microbial processes, such as nitrification, remains poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of MOF-5, Zn(II)-MOF, dissolved Zn(II), and their corresponding organic ligands on ammonium oxidation (AO) and nitrite oxidation (NO) using microrespirometric assays. Structural and physicochemical characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of both MOFs and revealed distinct morphologies, crystal structures, and colloidal behavior in aqueous media. For the

Pathogenesis and Sustainable Management of Pseudomonas syringae: Emerging Roles of Microbial Consortia and Responsive Nanomaterials.

Pseudomonas syringae remains a globally devastating phytopathogen threatening over 500 species. This review delineates the biochemical coevolution between P. syringae and hosts, focusing on Type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors and phytotoxins (e.g., coronatine) that enzymatically reprogram plant hormone signaling. To circumvent the limitations of traditional bactericides, we propose integrated green strategies. In biocontrol, we advocate for rationally engineered Synthetic Microbial Consortia (SynComs) and the biochemical quenching of N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) to disrupt quorum-s

Thermophilic biohydrogen production from reservoir residual hydrocarbons using palm oil mill effluent-derived microbial consortia.

Residual crude oil remaining in depleted reservoirs represents a largely untapped carbon source for biological hydrogen generation. Previous studies have relied on indigenous bacteria present in oil reservoirs but reported low hydrogen yields, as not all reservoir microorganisms are hydrogen-producing. Therefore, in this study, external mixed culture bacterial consortia obtained from palm oil mill effluent (POME) were used to degrade crude oil for hydrogen production. Morphological changes in microbial communities were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy. Metagenomic pro

Refining the root-associated microbial consortia for enhanced biocontrol of the root-rot pathogen of corn.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial consortia play a crucial role in plant protection by suppressing soil-borne pathogens. A previously studied root-associated microbial consortium consisting of seven bacterial strains (C7) demonstrated biocontrol activity against seedling blight in corn caused by Fusarium verticillioides. To enhance its biocontrol potential, we attempted to refine the community structure by either adding or removing them based on their inhibition potential and plant-growth-promoting traits. METHODS: We used a plate-based method and plant assays to evaluate the biocontrol efficacy of S8,

Microbial Genomic Consortia in Prostate Cancer: Mechanistic Signaling, the Gut-Prostate Axis, and Translational Perspectives.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) arises from complex interactions among host genetics, androgen signaling, and microbial communities. Emerging genomic evidence supports the presence of microbial consortia within prostate tissue, suggesting that microbial genes, metabolites, and host-microbe interactions may contribute to chronic inflammation, oncogenic signaling, and therapeutic resistance. Methods: We conducted a narrative review using targeted searches of PubMed and Google Scholar for studies published between 2020 and 2025, complemented by selected mechanistic reports published in March 20

Characterization of anaerobic biotransformation of hexachlorocyclohexanes by novel microbial consortia enriched from channel and river sediments.

The microbial biotransformation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) by novel anaerobic microbial consortia enriched from sediments of an industrial effluent channel and the river Ravi in Pakistan was examined. The anaerobic consortia were capable of biotransforming α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH through reductive dichloroelimination, resulting in the formation of benzene and monochlorobenzene. Concerning γ-HCH biotransformation by the channel and river cultures, isotopic fractionations for carbon (εC) were - 5.3 ± 0.4 (‰) and - 10.6 ± 1.2 (‰), while isotopic fractionations for chlorine (εCl) were - 4.4 ± 0.
