Current anticholinesterase pesticides were developed during World War II and are toxic to mammals because they target a catalytic serine residue of acetylcholinesterases (AChEs) in insects and in mammals. A sequence analysis of AChEs from 73 species and a three-dimensional model of a malaria-carrying mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) AChE (AgAChE) reported here show that C286 and R339 of AgAChE are conserved at the opening of the active site of AChEs in 17 invertebrate and four insect species, respectively. Both residues are absent in the active site of AChEs of human, monkey, dog, cat, cattle, rab

Dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) have emerged as major global public health challenges, causing numerous infections and fatalities each year. However, current measures, including vaccines and treatments, are often limited or ineffective. This highlights the urgent need for novel preventive strategies to control the spread of key mosquito-borne viruses like DENV and ZIKV. In a recent study published in Science, Zhang et al. isolated a bacterium named Rosenbergiella_YN46 from the gut of field-caught Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in Yunnan Province, China. This commentary reviews their fin

Vector-borne diseases are serious public health concern. Mosquito is one of the major vectors responsible for the transmission of a number of diseases like malaria, Zika, chikungunya, dengue, West Nile fever, Japanese encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, and yellow fever. Various strategies have been used for mosquito control, but the breeding potential of mosquitoes is such tremendous that most of the strategies failed to control the mosquito population. In 2020, outbreaks of dengue, yellow fever, and Japanese encephalitis have occurred worldwide. Continuous insecticide use resulted in stron

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes transmit important human pathogens, including dengue virus, but are notoriously hard to control. Mosquito-disseminated pyriproxyfen (MDPPF) uses the mosquitoes themselves to transfer particles of pyriproxyfen, a potent larvicide and pupicide, from lure dissemination stations to untreated larval habitats. MDPPF can reduce mosquito densities, but possible epidemiological effects remain to be measured. We aimed to investigate whether MDPPF can help curb mosquito-borne disease transmission.
METHODS: In this pragmatic, before-after control-intervention paired-series (BACIPS)

The use of semiochemicals in odour-based traps for surveillance and control of vector mosquitoes is deemed a new and viable component for integrated vector management programmes. Over 114 semiochemicals have been identified, yet implementation of these for management of infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya and Rift Valley fever is still a major challenge. The difficulties arise due to variation in how different mosquito species respond to not only single chemical compounds but also complex chemical blends. Additionally, mosquitoes respond to different volatile blends when t

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are vectors of numerous diseases, including malaria and yellow fever. Mosquito control is therefore a priority in many countries, especially in healthcare settings. Here we investigated the opinions of patients and staff regarding mosquito control at a hospital in Nigeria, and also gathered data on mosquito-control measures in this setting.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire study of staff and patients and an observational approach to obtain data on mosquito-control measures used at a tertiary teaching hospital in Abakaliki, Nigeria.
DISCUSSION: Both

Zika virus (ZIKV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) has become one of the most medically important mosquito-borne viruses because of its ability to cause microcephaly in utero and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. This virus emerged from its sylvatic cycle in Africa to cause an outbreak in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia in 2007, French Polynesia in 2014, and most recently South America in 2015. The rapid expansion of ZIKV in the Americas largely has been due to the biology and behavior of its vector, Aedes aegypti. Other arboviruses transmitted by Ae. aegypti include the 2 flaviviruses dengue v

Mosquitoes transmit a wide range of viruses and malaria parasites, posing a significant threat to global public health. Among recent advances in genetic pest control, gene drives have emerged as a powerful tool. Through super-Mendelian inheritance, gene drives ensure biased transmission of specific traits to offspring, potentially enabling rapid propagation through wild populations. Gene drives can be utilized to alter or eliminate entire mosquito populations, potentially curbing vector-borne disease transmission in a sustainable manner. Additionally, several improved genetic control strategie

Since the initial discovery of the soil-dwelling actinomycete Saccharopolyspora spinosa in 1982, its metabolites spinosyns and modified spinosoids have been developed to control a wide variety of arthropod pests of economic importance. The most intensively studied are spinosad consisting of natural spinosyn A and D, as well as spinetoram comprising modified spinosyn J and L. The unique mode-of-action, high bioactivity and generally benign environmental safety profile of spinosyns add significant value to this class of pesticides of natural origin. Currently, products based on spinosad and spin

In recent years, global health security has been threatened by the geographical expansion of vector-borne infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. For a range of these vector-borne diseases, an increase in residual (exophagic) transmission together with ecological heterogeneity in everything from weather to local human migration and housing to mosquito species' behaviours presents many challenges to effective mosquito control. The novel use of drones (or uncrewed aerial vehicles) may play a major role in the success of mosquito surveillance and control p

The three main mosquito genera, Anopheles, Aedes and Culex, transmit respectively malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis. Current mosquito control strategies have proved unsuccessful, and there still is a substantial number of morbidity and mortality from these diseases. Genetic control methods have now arisen as promising alternative strategies, based on two approaches: the replacement of a vector population by disease-refractory mosquitoes and the release of mosquitoes carrying a lethal gene to suppress target populations. However, substantial hurdles and limitations need to be overcome if

Mosquito species, members of the genera Aedes, Anopheles and Culex, are the major vectors of human pathogens including protozoa (Plasmodium sp.), filariae and of a variety of viruses (causing dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, West Nile). There is lack of efficient methods and tools to treat many of the diseases caused by these major human pathogens, since no efficient vaccines or drugs are available; even in malaria where insecticide use and drug therapies have reduced incidence, 219 million cases still occurred in 2010. Therefore efforts are currently focused on the control of vector populat

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and filariasis cause an enormous health burden to people living in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Despite years of intense effort to control them, many of these diseases are increasing in prevalence, geographical distribution and severity, and options to control them are limited. The transinfection of mosquitos with the maternally inherited, endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia is a promising new biocontrol approach. Fruit fly Wolbachia strains can invade and sustain themselves in mosquito populations, reduce adult lifespan, aff

BACKGROUND: Reduction or elimination of vector populations will tend to reduce or eliminate transmission of vector-borne diseases. One potential method for environmentally-friendly, species-specific population control is the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). SIT has not been widely used against insect disease vectors such as mosquitoes, in part because of various practical difficulties in rearing, sterilization and distribution. Additionally, vector populations with strong density-dependent effects will tend to be resistant to SIT-based control as the population-reducing effect of induced steril

In recent years, global warming, expanding international trade, and changes in human behavior have increased the risk of invasive mosquito species entering the country via airports and seaports. In response, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has monitored mosquito species and disease-causing viruses within mosquitoes at 29 airport and seaport-associated locations in the Republic of Korea (ROK) twice a month from June to October. BG-Sentinel and black light traps were used to collect mosquitoes. The collected mosquitoes were identified and tested for flaviviruses (causative agents

As part of the World Health Organization's One Health Initiative, vector-borne disease control requires multidisciplinary and community involvement. This review examined community-based mosquito control intervention methods, their efficacy, and limitations. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline, data were extracted from four medical databases: PubMed, Clinical Key, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect, covering the period from 2014 to 2023. The search used the keywords "community intervention," "vector control," and "mosquito." Filters were

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) may help reduce Plasmodium parasite transmission in malaria-endemic areas. LSM approaches include habitat modification (permanently or temporarily reducing mosquito breeding aquatic habitats); habitat manipulation (temporary or recurrent change to environment); or use of chemical (e.g. larviciding) or biological agents (e.g. natural predators) to breeding sites. We examined the effectiveness of habitat modification or manipulation (or both), with and without larviciding. This is an update of a review published in 2013.

Mosquito control began in New York City in 1901. Large-scale efforts to drain marshlands occurred through the 1930s, and aerial application of pesticide occurred as early as 1956. Components of early mosquito-borne disease control were reimplemented in 1999-2000 in response to an outbreak of West Nile virus, and included promoting public and health professional awareness regarding disease causation and prevention, providing free government laboratory testing, case reporting, mapping of mosquito breeding sites and their elimination or application of larvicide to them, and adult mosquito control
