[Efficacy of moxifloxacin in the treatment of secondary peritonitis].

Moxifloxacin efficacy was studied in a prospective open controlled incomparable surveillance of 22 patients at the age of 24 to 78 years (the average of 56.6 +/- 15.9 years old) with extended secondary peritonitis that developed before the hospitalization or not later than 48 hours after the hospitalization. Moxifloxacin (Avelox) was used in a dose of 400 mg every 24 hours at first intravenously as infusions and then orally in the same dose. The abdominal infection was severe (APACHE II of 6 to 12, the average of 8.0 +/- 2.2), in 6 (27.3%) patients signs of severe sepsis with polyorganic insuf

Moxifloxacin in the therapy of experimental pneumococcal meningitis.

The activity of moxifloxacin (BAY 12-8039) against a Streptococcus pneumoniae type 3 strain (MIC and minimum bactericidal concentration [MBC] of moxifloxacin, 0.06 and 0.25 microgram/ml, respectively; MIC and MBC of ceftriaxone, 0.03 and 0.06 microgram/ml, respectively) was determined in vitro and in a rabbit model of meningitis. Despite comparable bactericidal activity, 10 micrograms of moxifloxacin per ml released lipoteichoic and teichoic acids less rapidly than 10 micrograms of ceftriaxone per ml in vitro. Against experimental meningitis, 10 mg of moxifloxacin per kg of body weight per ml

Penetration and accumulation of moxifloxacin in uterine tissue.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether moxifloxacin penetrates the uterine tissue and accumulates at levels sufficient to eradicate the major pathogens causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). METHOD: In a prospective, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group study we determined the concentration of moxifloxacin in plasma and uterine tissue after a single, 400-mg intravenous dose of moxifloxacin. Study participants were randomized for time of tissue sampling, which was performed 1, 2, 4, 7, or 24 hours following the moxifloxacin infusion. RESULTS: Of 43 participants, 40 were randomized to tissue s

Neonate with Mycoplasma hominis meningoencephalitis given moxifloxacin.

Mycoplasma hominis is a commensal organism in the genitourinary tract that can cause life-threatening CNS infections in neonates after intrauterine infection or through vertical transmission during birth. We present a case of an 11-day-old neonate presenting with fever and supporting laboratory evidence of a CNS infection. No systemic maternal infection or maternal genitourinary tract infection occurred at the time of delivery. Empirical treatment was initiated, consisting of amoxicillin, cefotaxime, and aciclovir. After clinical deterioration, 16S ribosomal DNA PCR in cerebrospinal fluid dete

Acute interstitial nephritis associated with moxifloxacin use.

BACKGROUND: Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent with proven efficacy against community-acquired respiratory pathogens. Common adverse effects associated with its use include gastro-intestinal symptoms, but nephrotoxicity has not yet been reported to the manufacturer or in the literature (based on a MEDLINE search [key words: fluoroquinolone, moxifloxacin, kidney, interstitial, and nephritis; years: 1970-2005]). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to describe a case of nephrotoxicity associated with moxifloxacin use. METHODS: A 68-year-old woman weighing 65 kg was ref

Time to reconsider moxifloxacin anti-anaerobic activity?

Large data on moxifloxacin activity on anaerobes are old. Moxifloxacin is often used for empiric therapy therefore the knowledge of current epidemiologic data is fundamental. We analyzed 69 anaerobic strains, from a recent multicenter Italian study, for moxifloxacin susceptibility. Using EUCAST criteria 81% of Bacteroides spp. and 48% of anaerobes other than Bacteroides were resistant to moxifloxacin. Using CLSI criteria moxifloxacin resistance rates decrease to 35% for all anaerobes, and to 41% for Bacteroides spp. We reported an alarming increase in moxifloxacin resistance among anaerobes in

Case of Moxifloxacin-Induced Black Hairy Tongue.

BACKGROUND Black hairy tongue (BHT) is a relatively uncommon acquired benign condition, with a prevalence ranging from 0.6% to 11.3%. It presents as a superficial black hairy carpet-like lingual growth. The exact etiology of BHT remains unclear, and both extrinsic and intrinsic factors are potentially contributive. Several types of antibiotics are also associated with BHT, but no English reports of moxifloxacin-induced BHT exist. Here, we report the first case of moxifloxacin-induced BHT. CASE REPORT A 69-year-old woman presented with a brown and hairy tongue. She was taking prednisolone for m

Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia due to moxifloxacin.

A 39-year-old woman with 1 day of oral petechiae, leg ecchymoses and epistaxis was found to have isolated thrombocytopenia. She had recently completed a 10-day course of moxifloxacin for an upper respiratory infection. On further questioning, she had developed thrombocytopenia 2 years earlier after a treatment course with moxifloxacin. After ruling out other causes, drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia due to moxifloxacin was diagnosed. Her platelets returned to normal range 15 days after finishing the medication.

Comparative Outcomes of Standard Perioperative Eye Drops, Intravitreal Triamcinolone Acetonide-Moxifloxacin, and Intracameral Dexamethasone-Moxifloxacin-Ketorolac in Cataract Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Since the advent of cataract surgery, topical eye drops have been the mainstay of postoperative prophylaxis and treatment. Due to factors such as high expenses and poor patient compliance, there has been a growing interest and acceptance of "dropless" or "less drops" alternatives. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide-moxifloxacin and intracameral dexamethasone-moxifloxacin-ketorolac to a standard eye drop regimen in controlling postoperative inflammation, corneal edema, and intraocular pressure (IOP) among cataract patien

Moxifloxacin in the treatment of skin and skin structure infections.

Moxifloxacin is a recent addition to the fluoroquinolone class, differing from ciprofloxacin and other older agents in having much better in vitro activity against Gram-positive aerobes while retaining potent activity against Gram-negative aerobes. It is also active against the pathogens of human and animal bite wounds and those species of atypical mycobacteria associated with dermatologic infections. Its activity against anaerobes is quite variable. Moxifloxacin penetrates well into inflammatory blister fluid and muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissues. Moxifloxacin should thus be a reasonabl
