A calibrated deep learning ensemble for abnormality detection in musculoskeletal radiographs.

Musculoskeletal disorders affect the locomotor system and are the leading contributor to disability worldwide. Patients suffer chronic pain and limitations in mobility, dexterity, and functional ability. Musculoskeletal (bone) X-ray is an essential tool in diagnosing the abnormalities. In recent years, deep learning algorithms have increasingly been applied in musculoskeletal radiology and have produced remarkable results. In our study, we introduce a new calibrated ensemble of deep learners for the task of identifying abnormal musculoskeletal radiographs. Our model leverages the strengths of

Musculoskeletal ultrasound abnormalities in professional rugby union players in the United States.

This cross-sectional observational study aimed to characterize the prevalence of musculoskeletal sonographic abnormalities among players (N = 23) in a Major League Rugby team during preseason medical evaluations. Bilateral ultrasound examinations were performed on the acromioclavicular (AC) joints, quadriceps, patellar, and Achilles tendons. Players most commonly reported prior injuries to the ankle/foot, leg, and shoulder. Ultrasound findings revealed a high prevalence of abnormalities across all examined sites: 65.2% in the AC joints, 70.6% in the quadriceps tendons, 100% in the patellar ten

Musculoskeletal abnormalities in a large international cohort of boys with 49,XXXXY.

49,XXXXY is the rarest X and Y chromosomal variation, with an incidence of 1 in 80,000-100,000 live male births and has been associated with numerous musculoskeletal abnormalities. Data was collected from an international cohort of boys with 49,XXXXY over 10 years. Children were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team consisting of a pediatric orthopedist, a neurogeneticist, a neurodevelopmentalist, and two physical therapists. Increased rates of torticollis (32.4%), hamstring tightness (42%), radioulnar synostosis (67.6%), pes planus (65.2%), and other foot abnormalities (86.9%) were observed.

Automated classification of musculoskeletal abnormalities using a dynamic ensemble of deep vision models.

Detecting and classifying musculoskeletal disorders is vital to preventing long-term disability and limited mobility; however, this procedure is challenging due to the shortage of radiologists. Existing artificial intelligence technologies, particularly deep vision models, aim to support specialists in rapid, accurate diagnosis. In this study, a dynamic ensemble model is developed using a Probability-based Dynamic Ensemble (PDE) approach with two vision models, ConvNeXt Base and Swin Transformer. Unlike conventional ensemble methods that employ fixed averaging or voting strategies, the propose

Diagnosis of musculoskeletal abnormalities based on improved lightweight network for multiple model fusion.

This paper introduces a solution to address the intricacy of the model employed in the deep learning-based diagnosis of musculoskeletal abnormalities and the limitations observed in the performance of a single deep learning network model. The proposed approach involves the integration of an improved EfficientNet-B2 model with MobileNetV2, resulting in the creation of FusionNet. First, EfficientNet-B2 is combined with coordinate attention (CA) to obtain CA-EfficientNet-B2. Furthermore, aiming to minimize the model parameter count, we further enhanced the mobile inverted residual bottleneck conv

[Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and bone. Abnormal bone metabolism in female elite athletes].

Recently, female athletes are particularly well, the other hand, many athletes suffer from amenorrhea due to excessive training. Especially, in sports with weight restrictions, they suffer from "Female athlete triad" , eating disorders, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. Amenorrhea is nothing else than a lack of estrogen, action on bone resorption and promote bone formation, by neglect this, it lead to osteoporosis and a stress fracture, and they would often give up their career as elite athletes. So we should consider it as serious sports injury. The problems of amenorrhea is should be recognized a

Activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) derived peptide NAP prevents musculoskeletal abnormalities in ovariectomized mice.

Estrogen is an essential hormone that critically impacts bodily and brain functions, supporting learning, memory, and motor activities. A decrease in estrogen levels is associated with cognitive decline and motor dysfunction, such as muscle weakness. While conventional hormone replacement treatments (HRT) exist, those have limitations and potentially severe side effects. NAP (davunetide) is the smallest neuroprotective peptide site of activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP), a master regulator of cognition, essential for brain formation. It is known that NAP restores ADNP activity in

Formation of colorectal liver metastases induces musculoskeletal and metabolic abnormalities consistent with exacerbated cachexia.

Advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) is often accompanied by development of liver metastases (LMs) and skeletal muscle wasting (i.e., cachexia). Despite plaguing the majority of CRC patients, cachexia remains unresolved. By using mice injected with Colon-26 mouse tumors, either subcutaneously (s.c.; C26) or intrasplenically to mimic hepatic dissemination of cancer cells (mC26), here we aimed to further characterize functional, molecular, and metabolic effects on skeletal muscle and examine whether LMs exacerbate CRC-induced cachexia. C26-derived LMs were associated with progressive loss of body we

Dystrophin and utrophin "double knockout" dystrophic mice exhibit a spectrum of degenerative musculoskeletal abnormalities.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative muscle disorder characterized by the lack of dystrophin expression at the sarcolemma of muscle fibers. In addition, DMD patients acquire osteopenia, fragility fractures, and scoliosis indicating that a deficiency in skeletal homeostasis coexists but little is known about the effects of DMD on bone and other connective tissues within the musculoskeletal system. Recent evidence has emerged implicating adult stem cell dysfunction in DMD myopathogenesis. Given the common mesenchymal origin of muscle and bone, we sought to investigate bone and oth

The effect of musculoskeletal abnormalities on lung function in children born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND: Chest wall deformities (CWD) and scoliosis are common comorbidities in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) survivors. Their effects on lung function remain unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 184 CDH patients treated in our clinic between 1999 and 2025, of whom 166 (90.2%) survived until discharge. We matched patients with varying degrees of musculoskeletal abnormalities to controls from our cohort and compared spirometry data. RESULTS: 6.7% of patients had scoliosis and 57.9% had CWD, most commonly asymmetry of the chest (46.4%) and pectus excavatum (42.1%). CWD were

The musculoskeletal abnormalities of the Similaun Iceman ("ÖTZI"): clues to chronic pain and possible treatments.

BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION: In 1991, a deceased human male was found frozen in a glacier pool in the Italian Alps in north west Italy, and is now carefully preserved in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, in Bolzano, Italy. The bodily tissues of the 5,300 year old male (colloquially referred to as the Iceman or Ötzi) were well preserved despite damage related to freezing, and glacial movement. Associated articles of well-preserved clothing, tools, weapons and other devices were also present and have been studied in detail. Clinical examination and imaging investigations have also shown tha

Screening for congenital dislocation of the hip, scoliosis, and other abnormalities affecting the musculoskeletal system.

The three main conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system currently being screened for are spina bifida cystica, congenital dislocation of the hip, and scoliosis. The techniques of screening are different for each: amniotic fluid analysis for spina bifida cystica, a manual physical examination for congenital dislocation of the hip, and a visual examination for scoliosis. Properly time amniotic fluid analysis for alpha-fetoprotein is both a sensitive and specific test for neural tube defects. However, because of the low incidence of spina bifida cystica, this examination is justified only

Disorganization and Musculoskeletal Diseases: Novel Insights into the Enigma of Unexplained Bone Abnormalities and Fragility Fractures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Describe the potential contribution of disorganized tissue to the pathogenesis of bone abnormalities and fractures. Especially, fractures that are unexplained by bone loss (osteoporosis) or structural deterioration. RECENT FINDINGS: Currently, bone fragility is primarily viewed as due to loss, or decay (osteoporosis). However, it is also acknowledged that this view is limited because it does not explain many fractures or abnormalities such as necrosis, sclerosis, or infarcts. Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) during antiresorptive therapy are an example. Hence, it is propos

Musculoskeletal abnormalities of the forearm in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis relate mainly to bone geometry.

OBJECTIVE: Alterations of the skeletal system, including reduced bone mineral density, increased frequency of fractures, and changes in markers of bone metabolism, have been described in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), but measurement of volumetric bone density and bone geometry is not possible with the techniques used in most studies. This study was undertaken to obtain a more detailed understanding of the musculoskeletal system in JIA by analyzing bone density, bone geometry, and muscle force as the most important factor in bone development. METHODS: The technique of peripheral quantit

Abnormal Cytokines in Trauma Patients Explained by Obesity, Musculoskeletal Disease, Smoking, and Lung Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Low-grade inflammation observed through abnormal plasma cytokine levels has been associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is not clear whether PTSD independently causes the inflammation or if it is mainly through co-occurring somatic factors such as smoking and obesity. We wanted to explore the effects of biopsychosocial factors on cytokine levels in a clinical setting. METHODS: The sample consisted of 51 patients with PTSD, 58 trauma patients without PTSD, and 40 matched controls. We selected cytokines and relevant risk factors for systemic inflammation through
