Nasal septal perforation repair remains technically demanding, with technique selection guided by perforation size, location, etiology, and patient risk factors. Contemporary evidence supports mucosal advancement flaps for small perforations (< 1 cm), bilateral advancement with interposition grafting or trilayer temporoparietal fascia-polydioxanone constructs for medium perforations (1-2 cm), and pedicled flaps for large (≥ 2 cm) or revision cases, with overall closure rates ranging from 84% to 98%. Modifiable risk factors, including active smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and ongoing intranasa

Nasal septal perforation may present with various symptoms. Perforations may be surgically closed or managed by obturation, inserting a prosthesis. We used a silicon septal button in the management of nasal septal perforation. In the follow-up period, although the insertion of the nasal septal button alleviated epistaxis, whistling during inspiration, and nasal obstruction, it could not control the production of crusting around the margin of the button.

BACKGROUND: Nasal obstruction is a typical symptom in patients with nasal septal perforations. Rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry are not reliable in these cases because the perforations generate incorrect results. Infrared thermography camera (ITC) systems allow contact-free intranasal recordings of the nasal surface temperature and the semiquantification of nasal airflow. The aim of this study was to perform contact-free temperature measurements of the nasal vestibular surface by application of ITC systems in patients with septal perforations to investigate the disturbed intranasal heat

Objective: Nasal septal perforation (NSP) is a structural anomaly that affects the mucosa, cartilage, and bone of the nasal septum, often stemming from septoplasty as the primary cause. Spontaneous healing of a perforated septum is rare, and typically the healing process is observed until it is determined that the condition is stable and no longer deteriorating, at which point surgical intervention is considered. Numerous surgical techniques have been proposed for NSP repair. This study introduces a novel approach incorporating a fascia lata graft with fat tissue and diced septal cartilage to

There are very few reports of extranodal nasal-type NKTL with septal perforation, as seen in our patient. In addition, extranodal nasal-type NKTL is often diagnosed as chronic inflammation on histopathological examination. Therefore, if nasal septal perforation does not improve with appropriate conservative treatment, clinicians should consider a malignant disease such as extranodal nasal-type NKTL.

The usefulness of nasal irrigation for chronic rhinosinusitis is recognized, and it is widely used as a topical treatment after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Generally, there are few complications due to nasal irrigation, and it is recognized as a highly safe treatment. There are no reports of nasal septal perforation due to nasal irrigation. The objective of this study was to describe three cases of nasal septal perforation occurring during self-nasal irrigation after ESS. Case patient 1 was a 38-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of nasal obstruction. Based on

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasal septal perforations can have a substantial impact on patient's nasal breathing and subsequent quality of life. Various surgical techniques have previously been described for the repair of these perforations. In this review, we examine the most recent literature evaluating surgical techniques for the repair of nasal septal perforations.
RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-seven studies evaluating 646 patients were included. None of these studies compared different surgical techniques. Four major categories of surgical techniques are described: multilayer, single layer, patch, and

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to describe our surgical technique for the treatment of nasal septal perforations.
STUDY AND DESIGN: We studied 31 patients with nasal septal perforation treated with an endoscope-assisted technique, based on a bilateral dissection of monopedicled mucosal flaps from the nasal fossa floor, sutured at the edge of the perforation previously unstuck, without any graft interposed between the two mucosal layers.
RESULTS: In our experience with 31 patients, the use of this technique led to the persistent closing (with follow-up for at least one year) of 96.3% of

Septal perforation is an avoidable complication of septal surgery, but it can also occur because of a variety of traumatic, iatrogenic, caustic, or inflammatory reasons. Symptoms usually are related to disruption of the normally laminar flow of air through the nasal passages. Crusting, bleeding, parosmia, and neuralgia can develop, leading the patient to seek medical care. When local hygiene and conservative care are unsuccessful in relieving symptoms, closure of the perforation is considered. Repair is often difficult because of the limited exposure and limited amounts of friable mucosa with

BACKGROUND: Rhinologists frequently encounter challenging cases of septal perforation, and to date, no definitive consensus exists regarding the most appropriate surgical technique.
METHODS: The study included adult patients with anterior septal perforation. All patients underwent a general and ear-nose-throat examination (including upper airway endoscopy) as well as computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The endoscopic unilateral anteriorly-based nasal flap procedure was performed under general anesthesia.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients with anterior septal perforations measurin

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to reveal the efficacy of the "cross-stealing" technique in the repair of nasal septal perforation.
METHODS: In a prospective clinical investigation, 10 patients with the complaints of crusting, bleeding, whistling, nasal obstruction, and pain and in whom septal perforation was detected underwent surgery by endonasal approach between April 2006 and January 2008. During surgery, the inferior-based mucoperichondrial flap was prepared on one side, the superior-based mucoperichondrial flap was prepared on the other side of the nasal septum, and they were pass

Nasal septal perforation is known to be associated with various traumatic and disease states, yet spontaneous nasal septal perforation (SNSP) is relatively rare. SNSP has been reported in three patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and we report an additional seven patients with SNSP and RA, four of whom were seronegative and none of whom had Raynaud's, in contrast to those reported previously. Manifestations of overt infectious, neoplastic or granulomatous disease have not been found in our seven patients over several years of close follow-up. We have identified no obvious path

OBJECTIVE: The presentation, etiology, and treatment of nasal septal perforation have been described in the adult literature; however, reports in the pediatric population are limited. In this study, we review our experience with pediatric nasal septal perforations with a focus on presentation, pathogenesis, management, and outcomes of surgical repair.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on pediatric patients diagnosed with nasal septal perforations from 1998 to 2015. Data regarding patient demographics, perforation characteristics, and treatment were extracted and analyzed.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septal perforation can cause troublesome symptoms. Surgical repair is indicated in symptomatic patients. Many approaches and techniques have been described, each with its advantages and indications.
METHOD: The study included six patients with symptomatic nasal septal perforations sized 1-2.5 cm horizontally by 0.5-1.5 vertically. Patient symptoms included nasal crusts (all patients), nasal obstruction (five), cacosmia (three) and recurrent epistaxis (three). Patients underwent endonasal endoscopic repair using an inferior turbinate free graft applied between the mucoperichon

IMPORTANCE: Large and complex nasal septal perforations may cause considerable patient discomfort and are challenging to repair. Posterior septal resection (PSR) is a simple procedure and can be incorporated into the surgical management algorithm for this patient population.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate PSR for the treatment of symptomatic complex and large nasal septal perforations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective medical chart review from 1995 through 2007 of patients who underwent PSR. Medical charts were reviewed, and a follow-up telephone questionnaire was performed.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal septum is an extremely rare malignancy. In this article, we report a case of 52-year-old female with a complaint of nasal obstruction along with occasional nasal bleeding for one year. Endoscopy showed a 2.5x2 cm perforation originating from the anterior nasal septum. Incisional biopsy result was reported as squamous cell carcinoma. The tumor was removed by functional endoscopic surgery. Histopathological examination revealed squamous cell carcinoma with safe surgery borders. No recurrence and complications were noticed after one year of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septal perforation (NSP) repair is challenging surgery considered in patients with symptomatic NSP intractable to conservative treatments. This study aimed to assess the success rate and identify factors affecting the surgical outcome of NSP by analyzing consecutive series of NSP repairs by a single surgeon.
METHODS: We enrolled 84 patients diagnosed with NSP and who underwent surgical repair of NSP by a single surgeon (Y.J.J.) between November 2007 and July 2022. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed regarding variables involving preoperative symptoms, rhinologic his

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of nasal septal perforation (NSP) on CT imaging in an urban hospital setting.
METHODS: Facial bone CT scans from 3708 consecutive patients were reviewed for the presence of NSP. Size of the perforation was measured in two dimensions. Medical records were reviewed for possible risk factors.
RESULTS: The prevalence of NSP was 2.05%. The most common risk factor was a history of drug abuse. Cocaine was the most prevalent drug used.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of NSP was more than double of that previously published, likely related to intranasal drug use in
