Scope, Findability, and Quality of Information About Music-Based Interventions in Oncology: Quantitative Content Analysis of Public-Facing Websites at National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers.

BACKGROUND: Music-based interventions (MBIs) are evidence-based, nonpharmacological treatments that include music therapy (MT) delivered by board-certified music therapists, as well as music services (MS) delivered by other health professionals and volunteers. Despite MBI's growing evidence base in cancer symptom management, it remains unclear how MBI-related information is presented to the public. Over 80% of people with cancer use the internet to find health-related information. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) identifies certain Cancer Centers (CCs) as NCI-designate

Identification of novel telomeric G-quadruplex-targeting chemical scaffolds through screening of three NCI libraries.

Thirteen compounds with diverse chemical structures have been identified as selective telomeric G-quadruplex-binding ligands through screening the NCI Diversity Set II, the NCI Natural Products Set II and the NCI Mechanistic Diversity Set libraries containing a total of 2307 members against a human telomeric G-quadruplex using a FRET-based DNA melting assay. These compounds show significant selectivity towards a telomeric G-quadruplex compared to duplex DNA, fall within a molecular weight range of 327-533, and are generally consistent with the Lipinski Rule of Five for drug-likeness. Thus they

State of the science and future directions for research on HIV and cancer: Summary of a joint workshop sponsored by IARC and NCI.

An estimated 38 million people live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide and are at excess risk for multiple cancer types. Elevated cancer risks in people living with HIV (PLWH) are driven primarily by increased exposure to carcinogens, most notably oncogenic viruses acquired through shared transmission routes, plus acceleration of viral carcinogenesis by HIV-related immunosuppression. In the era of widespread antiretroviral therapy (ART), life expectancy of PLWH has increased, with cancer now a leading cause of co-morbidity and death. Furthermore, the types of cancers occurring a

Presentation of caregiver-specific vaccine-related information on National Cancer Institute designated cancer center websites.

BACKGROUND: Household-based caregivers serve an important role in protecting the health of cancer patients, who may be vulnerable to infectious diseases due to their cancer treatments. Caregiver preventive care should be prioritized to maintain continuity of care and to reduce potential for transmission of infectious diseases to cancer patients. Uptake of vaccines, such as influenza vaccine, is suboptimal in the United States in general, as well as among caregivers for cancer patients. Little is known about the types of information about vaccination and prevention of infectious diseases (e.g.

The Vanguard Study: Assessing feasibility of conducting randomized trials of novel multi-cancer detection tests.

A new generation of cancer screening tests, Multi-Cancer Detection (MCD) tests, aims to advance cancer early detection. MCD tests combine blood-based assays of biological components and bioinformatics algorithms to simultaneously detect multiple types of cancer. If shown to improve health outcomes, these new technologies would be simple to implement, improving accessibility and uptake. Importantly, MCD tests offer early detection opportunities for cancers with no established screening modalities. Despite their promise, evidence supporting public health benefits of MCD tests for early detection

The Making of a PreCancer Atlas: Promises, Challenges, and Opportunities.

Many cancers evolve from benign precancerous lesions and have a natural history of progression that provides a window of opportunity for intervention. The biological mechanisms underlying this evolutionary trajectory can only be truly understood through an extensive characterization of the molecular, cellular, and non-cellular properties of premalignant and malignant tumors, and must also recognize how the microenvironment (stromal cells, immune cells, and other types of cells) contributes to this evolution. We describe here the need to develop comprehensive molecular and cellular atlases for

Optimizing early phase clinical trial washout periods: a report from the Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma consortium.

BACKGROUND: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) issued a 2021 memorandum adopting the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) task force recommendations to broaden clinical study eligibility criteria. They recommended that washout periods be eliminated for most prior cancer therapy and when required to utilize evidence- and/or rationale-based criteria. The Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia and Lymphoma (TACL) consortium responded to this guidance. METHODS: A TACL task force reviewed the consortium's research portfolio, the relevant litera

Harnessing imaging tools to guide immunotherapy trials: summary from the National Cancer Institute Cancer Imaging Steering Committee workshop.

As the immuno-oncology field continues the rapid growth witnessed over the past decade, optimising patient outcomes requires an evolution in the current response-assessment guidelines for phase 2 and 3 immunotherapy clinical trials and clinical care. Additionally, investigational tools-including image analysis of standard-of-care scans (such as CT, magnetic resonance, and PET) with analytics, such as radiomics, functional magnetic resonance agents, and novel molecular-imaging PET agents-offer promising advancements for assessment of immunotherapy. To document current challenges and opportuniti

The Childhood Cancer Data Initiative: Using the Power of Data to Learn From and Improve Outcomes for Every Child and Young Adult With Pediatric Cancer.

Data-driven basic, translational, and clinical research has resulted in improved outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs) with pediatric cancers. However, challenges in sharing data between institutions, particularly in research, prevent addressing substantial unmet needs in children and AYA patients diagnosed with certain pediatric cancers. Systematically collecting and sharing data from every child and AYA can enable greater understanding of pediatric cancers, improve survivorship, and accelerate development of new and more effective therapies. To accomplish this goal, the

Outcomes of Pregnancy During Immunotherapy Treatment for Cancer: Analysis of Clinical Trials Sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

Despite expanding indications for immunotherapeutic agents, there is limited understanding about their clinical effects on pregnancy outcomes. Generally, pregnant patients with cancer are excluded from clinical trials, and inadvertent pregnancies on trial result in patients being taken off because of concerns for fetal toxicity. To answer this question of pregnancy outcomes on immunotherapy-based trials, we performed a retrospective analysis of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP)-Adverse Event Reporting System for unexpected pregnancies during NCI-CTEP-

Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Approaches Into Treatment of Commercial Tobacco Use for Optimal Cancer Care Delivery.

Tobacco-related cancer incidence and mortality and commercial tobacco use have decreased steadily in recent decades, but improvements have not been equitably experienced across population subgroups. A complex interaction across socioecological domains of individual, interpersonal, community/organization, and societal/policy factors influence disparities in tobacco use, treatment, and related health outcomes. NCI's Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) provides an ideal platform to examine and intervene on multilevel influences across the cancer control continuum to reduce any disproportiona

Rationale, Procedures, and Response Rates for a Pilot Study to Sample Cancer Survivors for NCI's Health Information National Trends Survey: HINTS-SEER 2021.

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) is a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults in which 12-17% of respondents report a cancer history. To increase representation from adult cancer survivors, in 2021, NCI sampled survivors from three Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program cancer registries: Iowa, New Mexico, and the Greater Bay Area. Sampling frames were stratified by time since diagnosis and race/ethnicity, with nonmalignant tumors and non-melanoma skin cancers excluded. Participants completed a self-administered

Screen for New Antimicrobial Natural Products from the NCI Program for Natural Product Discovery Prefractionated Extract Library.

The continuing emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes highlights the need for the identification of new chemotypes with antimicrobial activity. One of the most prolific sources of antimicrobial molecules has been the systematic screening of natural product samples. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Cancer Institute here report a large screen of 326,656 partially purified natural product fractions against a panel of four microbial pathogens, resulting in the identification of >3000 fractions with antifungal and/or antibacterial activity.
