A tortuous ureter can prevent successful retrograde ureteral access. Forceful attempts at catheterizing a ureteral kink may result in perforation and urinary extravasation. We review the currently recommended techniques to negotiate the tortuous ureter and present an additional endourological maneuver to bypass those kinks refractory to conventional methods.

This article develops the concept of temporal structuration to explain how actors engage temporal norms as social structures. Based on 64 life story interviews in Shenzhen and analysed through constructivist grounded theory, it examines reproductive timing in urban China, where marriage and childbearing are organised by a dense timetable enforced through kin relations. The analysis identifies a situated repertoire of four types of strategy: accommodation, transformation, redirection and identity-based claims, which participants combined and redeployed as relationships, pressures and available

Why do some people's minds seem conspicuous, disabled, and ill-fitting in some contexts and not others? This special issue presents articles about people in Jordan, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States who live with Down syndrome, autism, intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, or histories of brain injuries. We focus on the disjunctive encounters between these individuals' minds and the varied relational processes in their surrounding social world in order to understand why different mental characteristics become points of concern and comparison at some points and not others -

BACKGROUND: Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based service model that combines permanent housing and supportive case management premised on harm reduction and consumer self-determination to end homelessness for high-need individuals. Originally developed for use with single adults, this model is now being employed with families. Yet there is little empirical work on how HF is implemented with this particular population.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine how frontline providers adapt and apply HF to formerly homeless or at-risk, families involved in child welfare.

BackgroundAuthority and hierarchy shape nursing practice, influencing professional relationships, decision-making, advocacy and patient care. Although these concepts are widely present in healthcare, they are often examined indirectly through issues such as communication, bullying, professional status or organisational culture, rather than as phenomena in their own right.Research question/aim/objectivesThe aim of this study was to explore how nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom and Australia experience authority and navigate hierarchy in their work, and the consequences of these dynamics

Older adults' mobility is a growing area of research, with multiple methods being employed to understand whether older adults can adequately access key destinations. This has resulted in increased interest in older adults' activity spaces, and a concomitant rise in methods employed to work with these individuals. While GPS-based data collection has advantages, traditional paper surveys remain in use due to their perceived low barriers to entry for participants and researchers. Relatively little is known regarding the appropriateness and validity of paper-based, self-reported activity diary dat

This is a series of 7 cases in which the operator penetrated lateral canals with instruments. Two teeth presented with irreversible pulpitis, 4 with necrotic pulps, and 1 with previous treatment. Except for the teeth with pulpitis, all the others were associated with apical periodontitis. The main root canal was always relatively straight, with the lateral canals at the middle third of the root. Suggestive images of lateral canal presence were seen on periapical radiographs in five cases. The clinician introduced intentionally small hand instruments in the lateral canal in 5 cases, while the p

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities are underrepresented in health professions education and practice. Barriers for inclusion include stigma, disabling discourses, discriminatory programme design and oppressive interactions. Current understandings of this topic remain descriptive and fragmented. Existing research often includes only one profession, excludes particular types of disability and focuses on one aspect of the career journey. To expand understanding, we examined the recurrent forms of social relations that underlie the participation of disabled individuals in learning and practice

PURPOSE: Safe navigation requires avoiding objects. Visual field loss may affect how one visually samples the environment, and may thus contribute to bumping into objects and falls. We tested the hypothesis that gaze strategies and the number of collisions differ between people with glaucoma and normally sighted controls when navigating around obstacles, particularly under multitasking situations.
METHODS: Twenty persons with moderate-severe glaucoma and 20 normally sighted controls walked around a series of irregularly spaced vertical obstacles under the following three conditions: walking w

Advances in neuroscience are changing how mental health issues such as addiction are understood and addressed as a brain disease. Although a brain disease model legitimizes addiction as a medical condition, it promotes neuro-essentialist thinking, categorical ideas of responsibility and free choice, and undermines the complexity involved in its emergence. We propose a 'biopsychosocial systems' model where psycho-social factors complement and interact with neurogenetics. A systems approach addresses the complexity of addiction and approaches free choice and moral responsibility within the biolo

Negotiating a tortuous or obstructed ureter with a wire can be time-consuming and sometimes tiring. The principle of using a slippery floppy wire and then replacing it with a stiff wire through a 5-french open-ended ureteral catheter yields a high success rate. The ureteral catheter can be used for a radiocontrast study and allows access for a 0.035 'coaxial wire', which can be used as a guide wire for a single or double J stent.

To reach an agreement, successful negotiators typically need to understand two things: what they themselves are willing to accept, and what the other side is willing to accept. Understanding the other party's threshold requires perspective taking. In negotiations over goods or services, these judgments shape perceptions of the bargaining zone: the range of outcomes both parties would prefer to walking away without an agreement. The present paper examines how negotiators form perceptions of the bargaining zone. These perceptions have important downstream consequences, influencing everything fro

Negotiation is integral to social life. Whether we focus on exchanges between individuals, groups, organizations, or nations, negotiation is the most common and constructive way of making deals and solving disputes. Negotiations can spark intense emotions, which in turn shape negotiation processes and outcomes. Here, we review research on the social consequences of emotional expressions in negotiation. We summarize evidence regarding specific single emotions (e.g., anger, happiness, disappointment, sadness, fear, guilt, shame, pride, hope) as well as alternative (patterns of) emotional respons

Cooperative interactions among individuals are ubiquitous despite the possibility of exploitation by selfish free riders. One mechanism that may promote cooperation is 'negotiation': individuals altering their behaviour in response to the behaviour of others. Negotiating individuals decide their actions through a recursive process of reciprocal observation, thereby reducing the possibility of free riding. Evolutionary games with response rules have shown that infinitely many forms of the rule can be evolutionarily stable simultaneously, unless there is variation in individual quality. This pot

Emotional deception - the intentional misrepresentation of emotions - is pervasive in negotiations and everyday interactions. In this article, we review and extend theory and research on emotional deception in negotiations. We argue that emotional deception is a distinct form of deception with important economic, relational, and psychological consequences for both deceivers and their targets. Specifically, we define emotional deception, examine how it is perceived , and review its antecedents and consequences. We conclude by identifying promising directions for future research on emotional dec

Listening is a foundational interpersonal skill. Effective listening is central to managing the dual demands of negotiation: competing over limited resources while sustaining cooperation and trust. Nevertheless, limited research has shed light on how to listen effectively in negotiation. Integrating research from psychology, communication, and negotiation, we identify three common listening traps that undermine negotiation effectiveness: negotiators tend to focus too much on: (1) the self (and too little on others); (2) resolving disagreement (and too little on exploring it); and (3) what is s

The aim of this review was to summarize factors associated with condom negotiation among heterosexual men. Literature searches were conducted using multiple databases spanning several disciplines. Studies examining psychological, demographic, relational, communication, and environmental factors related to condom negotiation are described, and a three-dimensional framework of condom negotiation is proposed. This framework of condom negotiation may aid researchers in operationalizing this construct, organizing this literature, and facilitating measurement development. We used this three-dimensio

A carefully negotiated clinical trial agreement will protect a biotechnology and medical device company in critical areas, including the management and control of data and confidential information, defining publication rights and the ownership of intellectual property. Properly constructed, the agreement can increase a company's value. This article will review the major provisions of a standard industry sponsored clinical trial agreement; the principle areas where there is likely to be differing views that need to be reconciled and interrelated ethical concerns. A form of clinical trial agreem

Stair navigation, particularly stair descent, is an extremely challenging and dangerous locomotor task, yet studies suggest that most elderly are unlikely to move to new residences in order to avoid this challenge. The knee and ankle are the key joints where adequate strength and power are required for safe stair descent, and it is not yet clear if sarcopenia in the elderly is likely to result in residual strength below that which is required for successful stair performance. Sensory cues are also critical, and the lack of literature on the specific roles of the various intrinsic and extrinsic

The representation of women classified as maximum-security offenders continues to be a challenge due to paucity of research regarding their experiences. Generally, their stories are masked under the experiences of the other categories of incarcerated women. Drawing from a larger study conducted with incarcerated women in a South African correctional centre in Johannesburg, in this article I provide a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews on the lived experiences of negotiating the maximum-security offender identity by 13 women. The results suggest that the maximum-security offender identity
