PURPOSE OF REVIEW: HIV-associated neurocognitive disease is the most active topic for neuroAIDS investigations at present. Although impairment is mild in patients successfully treated with modern antiviral regimens, it remains an ongoing problem for HIV patients. It is important to update the emerging research concerning HIV-associated neurocognitive disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: The virus enters the brain during acute infection, with evidence for abnormal functioning that may occur early and often persists. Direct relationships with ongoing viral infection continue to be monitored, but chronic i

Developmental disorders of language include developmental language disorder, dyslexia, and motor-speech disorders such as articulation disorder and stuttering. These disorders have generally been explained by accounts that focus on their behavioral rather than neural characteristics; their processing rather than learning impairments; and each disorder separately rather than together, despite their commonalities and comorbidities. Here we update and review a unifying neurocognitive account-the Procedural circuit Deficit Hypothesis (PDH). The PDH posits that abnormalities of brain structures und

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), including postoperative delirium, delayed neurocognitive recovery, and postoperative neurocognitive disorder, are important complications in older and vulnerable surgical patients. These conditions are associated with prolonged hospitalization, reduced functional recovery, greater healthcare utilization, and worse longer-term outcomes. Current evidence indicates that PND is not driven by a single mechanism. Instead, systemic inflammation, neurovascular dysfunction, blood-brain barrier injury, glial activation, innate immune signalling, and synaptic

BACKGROUND: Empathy can be broadly defined as the ability to understand what others feel (cognitive empathy) and feel what others feel (affective empathy). The capacity to empathize may be impaired in certain major neurocognitive disorders (MNCDs), affecting not only the patient, but also the caregivers.
METHODS: PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies investigating empathy changes, using an objective scale, in patients with MNCDs.
RESULTS: The Interpersonal Reactivity Index was most commonly used to evaluate empathy in this population. Impairments in cognitive but not

Dementias, renamed neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) in the DSM-5, are defined by acquired decline in cognitive and functional abilities. DSM-5 now also includes mild NCD, which incorporates the previous diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. DSM-5 recognizes the following etiologies for NCDs: NCD due to Alzheimer's disease, vascular NCD, NCD with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal NCD, substance-/medication-induced NCD, NCD due to traumatic brain injury, NCD due to Huntington's disease, NCD due to HIV infection, NCD due to prion disease, and NCD due to other medical conditions. Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a common disorder following anesthesia and surgery, especially in the elderly. The complex cellular and molecular processes are involved in PND, but the underlying pathogenesis of which remains inconclusive due to conflicting data. A growing body of evidence has been shown that perioperative systemic inflammation plays important roles in the development of PND. We reviewed the relevant literature retrieved by a search in the PubMed database (on July 20, 2023). The search terms used were "delirium", "post operative cognitive dysfunction", "perioper

A significant number of patients infected with HIV-1 suffer from HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) such as spatial memory impairments and learning disabilities (SMI-LD). SMI-LD is also observed in patients using combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). Our lab has demonstrated that the HIV-1 protein, gp120, promotes SMI-LD by altering mitochondrial functions and energy production. We have investigated cellular processes upstream of the mitochondrial functions and discovered that gp120 causes metabolic reprogramming. Effectively, the addition of gp120 protein to neuronal cells di

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent research has highlighted executive function and neurocognitive deficits among individuals with eating and weight disorders, identifying a potential target for treatment. Treatments targeting executive function for eating and weight disorders are emerging. This review aims to summarize the recent literature evaluating neurocognitive/executive function-oriented treatments for eating and weight disorders and highlights additional work needed in this area.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) reflect the spectrum of neural impairments seen during chronic viral infection. Current research efforts focus on improving antiretroviral and adjunctive therapies, defining disease onset and progression, facilitating drug delivery, and halting neurodegeneration and viral resistance. Because HIV is species-specific, generating disease in small-animal models has proved challenging. After two decades of research, rodent HAND models now include those containing a human immune system. Antiviral responses, neuroinflammati

Postoperative delirium is a major health challenge in the context of an ageing surgical population. There is biological plausibility that ketamine might, despite its acute psychotomimetic and neuropsychiatric effects, reduce the subsequent incidence of postoperative delirium. A scoping review conducted by Brenna and colleagues expertly summarised the conflicting results of clinical studies performed to assess the utility of ketamine for this indication. Continued uncertainty about the dose, timing of administration, and specific target populations who might benefit from ketamine means that ket

William Morton introduced the world to ether anesthesia for use during surgery in the Bullfinch Building of the Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846. For nearly two centuries, the prevailing wisdom had been that the effects of general anesthetics were rapidly and fully reversible, with no apparent long-term adverse sequelae. Despite occasional concerns of a possible association between surgery and anesthesia with dementia since 1887 (Savage, 1887), our initial belief was robustly punctured following the publication in 1998 of the International Study of Post-Operative Cognitive Dy

INTRODUCTION: As individuals age, the prevalence of neurocognitive and mental health disorders increases. Current biomedical treatments do not completely address the management of these conditions. Despite new pharmacological therapy the challenges of managing these diseases remain. There is increasing evidence that the Gut Microbiome (GM) and microbial dysbiosis contribute to some of the more prevalent mental health and neurocognitive disorders, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BP), and dem

Introduction: It is widely accepted that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impairments in several cognitive domains in inpatients, but cognitive functioning has barely been systematically investigated in depressed outpatients. The aims of the present study were to examine cognitive functioning in depressed outpatients in comparison with healthy controls and to determine whether cognitive deficits vary as a function of different disorder characteristics and demographic variables. Method: We compared 103 outpatients with recurrent MDD in an acute phase of the illness with 103 he

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) remains a common cause of cognitive impairment and persists in 15-55% of HIV+ individuals in the combination antiretroviral therapy (CART) era. CART is now the primary treatment for HAND, but it is effective in only a subset of patients. In the pre-CART era, HIV-associated dementia was the most common form of HAND. However, in CART-treated patients, the prevalence of HIV-associated dementia has declined substantially, and milder stages of HAND, i.e., ANI and MND predominate. HIV+ patients with mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) can still have signi

Potent combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) has resulted in dramatic improvements in AIDS-associated morbidity and mortality. Although combination ART has resulted in a significant reduction in HIV-associated dementia, the most severe of the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), the overall prevalence of HAND among this population is estimated at 40%. It has been recognized that the central nervous system (CNS) serves as a reservoir for HIV, and neuronal damage begins at the time of acute infection and persists due to chronic infection of microglial and perivascular macrophages.

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorders are distinguished from general development disorders since, in general, only a certain number of processing mechanisms are involved whilst the remainder are unaffected.
DEVELOPMENT: The classification proposed by the DSM-IV takes a step towards clinical understanding and use of a common nomenclature. However, neuropsychological assessment is essential to understanding clinical subtypes. The neuro-cognitive approach, when taking into account the processing systems affected or involved, should include the strategies and principles of a cognitive-behavio

Neurocognitive disorders-including mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and delirium-are common yet often underrecognized in heart failure, impairing self-care and outcomes. These heart failure-related neurocognitive disorders pose a significant public health challenge due to high morbidity and mortality. Despite recent advances, timely detection, prevention, and intervention remain difficult. Most research focuses on pharmacological treatments, with limited attention to nonpharmacological approaches and mental health integration in heart failure care teams. Progress requires collaboration amo
