Cellular neurothekeomas arising on a café-au-lait macule.

Neurothekeoma is a tumor probably derived from the nerve sheath, which usually appears during the first 2 decades of life as a solitary papule or nodule; multiple neurothekeomas are very unusual. We present a case of multiple cellular neurothekeomas arising on a café-au-lait macule in a child, a situation that has not been reported to our knowledge.

A case of cellular myxoid neurothekeoma with unusual clinicopathologic features.

Cellular neurothekeoma is a benign cutaneous soft tissue neoplasm that usually arises in the upper parts of the body and affects mainly young individuals with a female predominance. This type of tumor shows a spectrum of atypical or "unusual" pathologic features that challenge pathologists in making a correct diagnosis. Herein, we present a case of cellular neurothekeoma with prominent myxoid features and dense interstitial chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate arising in a 28-year-old female as a nodule in the left popliteal fossa. Following a thorough literature search, this case is considere

PRAME expression in cellular neurothekeoma: A study of 11 cases.

BACKGROUND: Preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) has been widely investigated in the skin, mainly in melanocytic tumors, and constitutes an aid in differentiating benign from malignant lesions. Very few studies have been performed on non-melanocytic tumors. MATERIALS: We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of PRAME on a series of 11 neurothekeomas (NTKs), together with 3 cases of nerve sheath myxoma (NSM) and 1 case of plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor (PFT), in order to evaluate the presence and usefulness of this marker in their differential diagnosis. RESULTS: P

Cellular neurothekeoma of the eyelid: a unique internal palpebral presentation.

A 50-year-old woman presented with a mass lesion of the inferolateral palpebral conjunctiva similar in appearance to a chalazion, but unusual enough in presentation that excisional biopsy was initially performed. Histopathologic analysis revealed a dermal fibrohistiocytic neoplasm consistent with cellular neurothekeoma. Neurothekeoma is a benign tumor; the cellular variant is rare and of unclear histogenesis. Completely internal eyelid location is particularly rare, with other identifiable case reports of cellular neurothekeoma palpebrae referring to external or unspecified eyelid location. Th

A Case of Hybrid Cellular Neurothekeoma and Perineurioma With a Folliculin Gene Mutation.

Hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) are benign tumors that show features of more than one type of PNST. Benign cutaneous plexiform hybrid tumor of perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma (BCPHTPCN) is a rare, recently described entity that shows various combinations of histomorphologic and immunophenotypic features of the PNSTs perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma. Our case describes a middle-aged man initially presenting with an acute papulopustular rosacea flare. Rosacea treatment unmasked a prominent erythematous papule on the forehead. A biopsy was taken, and histopathological

Multiple myxoid cellular neurothekeomas in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Cellular neurothekeoma is a cutaneous tumor with a distinctive histopathologic appearance characterized by a dermal-based multinodular proliferation of epithelioid to spindled cells. Although the tumor may show varying amounts of myxoid stroma, extensive myxoid change is uncommon. The tumor typically presents as a solitary nodule with a predilection for the head and neck and upper limbs; examples of multiple cellular neurothekeomas are decidedly rare. The present report describes a unique case of multiple myxoid cellular neurothekeomas arising in a 60-year-old female with systemic lupus erythe

[Clinicopathologic features of dermal nerve sheath myxoma and neurothekeoma: a comparative study].

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis of dermal nerve sheath myxoma (DNSM) and neurothekeoma (NTK). Methods: Clinical, pathological features and immunohistochemical profiles in 9 cases of DNSM and 8 cases of NTK were comparatively studied. The literature was reviewed. Results: The involved site of 9 DNSMs included the hand/fingers (n=3), ear (n=2), face, back, abdominal wall and waist (1 case each). Two of 8 NTKs arose in the forearm (n=2), one each in the nose, lip, shoulder, supraclavicular region, leg and hand. The most common presentatio

Intracranial neurothekeoma--a rare parenchymal nerve sheath myxoma of the middle cranial fossa.

Neurothekeomas are rare, benign nerve sheath tumors, usually arising from cutaneous nerves in the head and neck region. So far, only 4 cases of the intracranial counterpart have been reported and these were located in the posterior fossa, sellar and parasellar region. We report here the first case of neurothekeoma located deep inside the brain parenchyma. Histologically, the tumor had lobular appearance with bland morphology in spite of cellular pleomorphism, myxoid background and variable S-100 positivity, characteristics of neurothekeomas. The schwannian origin was further confirmed ultrastr

Neurothekeoma of the eye, conjunctiva, and periorbital adnexa: A report of two cases and brief review.

Neurothekeomas (NTKs) are benign soft tissue tumors most commonly occurring in the head, neck, and upper extremities of young adults, with a female preponderance. Herein, we report 2 cases of ocular NTK presenting as an orbital mass or chalazion. Both cases underwent excision of the mass with histopathologic diagnosis of cellular NTK. Tumor cells for both cases were immunopositive for smooth muscle actin, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, and cluster of differentiation 10. S100, human melanoma black 45, and melanoma antigen recognized by t-cell (Melan A) were negative. Both were

Benign cutaneous plexiform hybrid tumour of perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma: A rare diagnosis.

Benign cutaneous plexiform hybrid tumour of perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma (BCPHTPCN) is an uncommon mesenchymal tumour first described in 2013, characterised by mixed features of perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma. Clinically, it presents as a small papule, most frequently located in the perioral region. Histologically, it displays a plexiform pattern composed of epithelioid and spindle cells within a myxoid stroma, together with a hybrid immunohistochemical profile. In this article, we describe the case of an 82-year-old woman presenting with a perioral nodule clinically suspec

Cellular Neurothekeoma in a Female with Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Cellular neurothekeoma is a rare cutaneous tumor that occurs more frequently in women. A 68-year-old female with a history of left nasal alar basal cell carcinoma and Guillain-Barré syndrome presented to the clinic with a 3-mm firm skin-colored papule with scattered telangiectasias. Histopathologic examination with immunochemistry of the lesion was consistent with cellular neurothekeoma. It stained positive for microphthalmia transcription factor and NKI-C3 and negative for HMB-45 and S-100. The lesion was excised with 3-mm margins, and no recurrence was noted within 1 year of follow-up. We pr

Sleeve-Shaped Neurothekeoma of the Ulnar Nerve: A Unique Case of a Still Unclear Pathological Entity.

Background: Neurothekeomas are slow-growing, well-circumscribed benign neoplasms. They usually involve cutaneous or subcutaneous tissues. Although originally described as myxomas deriving from nerve sheath cells, their exact histological classification is still uncertain. Peripheral nerve localization is rarely reported. Here, we describe a unique case of sleeve-shaped neurothekeoma of the ulnar nerve, which was incidentally discovered during a cubital tunnel release surgery. Methods: A 57-year-old man was admitted at our institution with clinical, ultrasonographic, and electromyographic findi

Metastatic cellular neurothekeoma arising over a vaccination scar: A case report and literature review.

Cellular neurothekeoma is a rare non-melanocytic skin neoplasm, considered benign and more common in children and young adults, primarily affecting the healthy skin of the head, neck, and scapular region. Based on the morphological findings of the initially reported cases, it was thought to originate from neural sheath cells. Clinical, morphological, and immunohistochemical correlation studies have demonstrated its dermal origin and the absence of neural markers, suggesting a fibrohistiocytic origin, though its histogenesis remains uncertain. They present as slow-growing, self-limiting dermal

Arborizing vessels under dermoscopy: a case of cellular neurothekeoma instead of basal cell carcinoma.

Neurothekeoma is a slow-growing, benign tumor of nerve sheath origin. Herein we present a 62-year-old female who presented with a 5-month history of a nodule that had shown a slight enlargement. She had a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for 10 years for which she had received multiple sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Cutaneous examination showed a well-defined, firm, 2 cm, pink-red nodule of the right supraclavicular area, which showed thick and arborizing vessels under dermoscopy. A diagnosis of cellular neurothekeoma was made after histopathologic examination with immunohistochem

Nerve sheath myxoma (neurothekeoma) of cerebellopontine angle: case report of a rare tumor with brief review of literature.

Nerve sheath myxoma (neurothekeoma) are rare benign nerve sheath tumors, usually arising in the skin of the head and neck region and upper extremities in young females. To the best of author's knowledge only two cases of intracranial neurothekeoma have been published in the English literature. These tumors were located in the parasellar area and in middle cranial fossa. This is the first case report of cerebellopontine angle neurothekeoma and third case report of intracranial neurothekeoma. This patient, a 45-year-old female, presented to us with complaints of right side progressive hearing lo

Cytologic findings of myxoid neurothekeoma: case report based on fine-needle aspiration cytology, immunohistochemistry, and correlating histopathology.

Myxoid neurothekeomas (nerve sheath myxomas) are rare benign cutaneous neoplasms that may morphologically mimic other myxoid neoplasms of skin and soft tissue. The cytologic and histopathologic features of this lesion may resemble various myxoid sarcomas, chordoma, myxoid neurofibroma, dermal cutaneous mucinosis, and cutaneous myxoma as well as other myxoid or chondroid neoplasms. In this study, a myxoid neurothekeoma was analyzed using multiple techniques. We found that myxoid neurothekeomas reveal a nonspecific pattern by fine-needle aspiration, including stellate cells embedded within an ab

In August 2016, an 11-year-old boy presented to the authors' institution with a right orbital tumor that was located superotemporally (superolaterally) and adherent to the sclera. The patient's past medical history revealed that he had undergone 2 previous craniotomies elsewhere in June 2008 and July 2010 for a superomedially located orbital lesion that had been histopathologically diagnosed as a neurothekeoma. After the second craniotomy, the patient underwent adjuvant intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) to the right medial orbit. At the authors' institution, total excision of the orbital
