The economic value of reducing mortality due to noncommunicable diseases and injuries.

With population aging, national health systems face difficult trade-offs in allocating resources. The World Bank launched the Healthy Longevity Initiative to generate evidence for investing in policies that can improve healthy longevity and human capital. As part of this initiative, we quantified the economic value of reducing avoidable mortality from major noncommunicable diseases and injuries. We estimated avoidable mortality-the difference between lowest-achieved mortality frontiers and projected mortality trajectories-for each cause of death, for 2000, 2019 and 2050, and for geographic reg

Noncommunicable diseases behavioural risk factors among secondary school adolescents in Urban Cameroon.

Adolescence is a crucial period for noncommunicable disease (NCD) risk factors, and interventions to reduce the NCD burden must target this age group. This study aimed to evaluate the NCD behavioural risk factors in adolescents attending state secondary schools in an urban setting in Cameroon. We conducted a cross-sectional survey using adapted structured questionnaires to assess the prevalence and correlates of NCD behavioural risk factors among adolescents attending selected urban state secondary schools in Douala IV, one of the six subdivisions in Douala, Cameroon. Of the 645 students who c

Injuries and noncommunicable diseases: emerging health problems of children in developing countries.

The present article identifies, for children living in developing countries, the major causes of ill-health that are inadequately covered by established health programmes. Injuries and noncommunicable diseases, notably asthma, epilepsy, dental caries, diabetes mellitus and rheumatic heart disease, are growing in significance. In countries where resources are scarce it is to be expected that increasing importance will be attached to the development and implementation of measures against these problems. Their control may benefit from the application of elements of programmes directed against inf

The role of cancer research in noncommunicable disease control.

Noncommunicable diseases were estimated to claim more than 36 million lives worldwide in 2008. Major contributors to this burden were cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. The United Nations General Assembly held a high-level meeting on noncommunicable diseases in September 2011 for heads of states and governments, conscious of the projected increases in disease incidence, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This meeting followed the Special Session on HIV/AIDS in 2001, the only other high-level meeting to discuss a health topic and orient th

Design and Implementation of Brief Interventions to Address Noncommunicable Diseases in Uzbekistan.

In Uzbekistan, NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes, accounted for over 80% of mortality in 2019. In 2021, national stakeholders, in conjunction with the World Health Organization, identified brief interventions (BIs) to implement in primary health care settings to change unhealthy behaviors and reduce the burden of NCDs in the country. BIs consist of a validated set of questions to identify and measure NCD behavioral risk factors and a short conversation with patients/clients about their behavior, as well as the provision of a referral opportunity for further in-depth

Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention and Cure: Work Performance and Gender Disparities in Mortality Risk.

IntroductionNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are associated with a less healthy workforce, higher medical expenditures, and worse on-the-job performance. The allocation of limited health resources between prevention and treatment is therefore critical, as it could influence both NCDs-related mortality risk and on-the-job productivity.MethodsUsing panel data from 38 OECD countries over the period 2000 to 2023, this study applies the system generalized method of moments (GMM) to examine (a) the nexus of prevention-cure-NCDs death probability, and (b) the possible roles of preventive and curative

Behavior Risk Factors for Noncommunicable Diseases and Caries in Adolescents: A Population Study.

INTRODUCTION: Caries is the most widespread noncommunicable disease (NCD) globally and can predict fatality NCDs in the future, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that the behavioral risk factors for those NCDs may be present in adolescents with caries. The objective was analyzing the association of unhealthy diet, tabagism, and alcohol with caries in adolescents. METHODS: This population-based study with a cross-sectional design used data from 2,515 adolescents aged 18-19 years, born in São Luís-MA, Brazil, and part of the RPS Cohort Consortium. The expo

[Frequency of selected chronic noncommunicable diseases in older patients with senile asthenia syndrome.].

An important area of medical and social research is prospective studies of a cohort of older patients with chronic non-communicable diseases aimed at studying the level of mortality, taking into account the presence/absence of senile asthenia syndrome. A prospective clinical and epidemiological study was conducted on 1 261 people aged 80 years and older receiving medical care on an outpatient basis. Three groups of patients were formed: without senile asthenia syndrome (7,6%), in a state of pre-asthenia (23,5%), with senile asthenia (68,9%). After a calendar year, an analysis was made of the c

Real-world data for precision public health of noncommunicable diseases: a scoping review.

BackgroundGlobal public health action to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) requires new approaches. NCDs are primarily prevented and managed in the community where there is little investment in digital health systems and analytics; this has created a data chasm and relatively silent burden of disease. The nascent but rapidly emerging area of precision public health offers exciting new opportunities to transform our approach to NCD prevention. Precision public health uses routinely collected real-world data on determinants of health (social, environmental, behavioural, biomedical and comm

The role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of noncommunicable diseases.

More and more people are turning to exercise as a means of achieving long-term health. The World Health Organization has endorsed this concept. The best available evidence suggests that an employee fitness programme will result in decreased health-care costs, decreased absenteeism and increased productivity for the employer. Regular physical activity is also associated with lower mortality rates. Appropriate physical activity may be a valuable tool in therapeutic regimens for the control and amelioration (rehabilitation) of cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congeni

Sociodemographic characteristics on behavioural risk factors of noncommunicable diseases in adolescents in Luxembourg.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for 89% of deaths in Luxembourg in 2019, aligning with Europe's figures but exceeding the global average of 74%. Behaviours play a critical role in NCD management, with unhealthy lifestyles-like poor diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption-posing significant risks, especially when combined. The present study aims to explore sociodemographic characteristics of adolescents presenting behavioural risks for NCDs in Luxembourg. METHODS: A representative sample of 8117 adolescents (11-to-18-years-old) took part in the 2

Noncommunicable disease and multimorbidity in young adults with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: Individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) are at increased risk for frailty and chronic disease due to factors experienced throughout the lifespan, such as excessive sedentary behaviors and malnutrition. However, little is known about noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and multimorbidity profiles in young adults with CP. The study objective was to compare NCD and multimorbidity profiles between young adults with and without CP. METHODS: A clinic-based sample of adults (18-30 years) with (n=452) and without (n=448) CP was examined at the University of Michigan Medical Center. The prevalence a

A Systematic Phylogenetic Approach to Study the Interaction of HIV-1 With Coinfections, Noncommunicable Diseases, and Opportunistic Diseases.

To systematically test whether coinfections spread along the HIV-1 transmission network and whether similarities in HIV-1 genomes predict AIDS-defining illnesses and comorbidities, we analyzed the distribution of these variables on the HIV phylogeny of the densely sampled Swiss HIV Cohort Study. By combining different statistical methods, we could detect, quantify, and explain the clustering of diseases. Infectious conditions such as hepatitis C, but also Kaposi sarcoma, clustered significantly, suggesting transmission of these infections along the HIV-1 transmission network. The clustering of
