Snapshots of simulation: creative strategies used by Australian educators to enhance simulation learning experiences for nursing students.

Simulation in nursing is a flourishing area for nurse educators' practice. Defined as learning that amplifies, mimics or replaces real-life clinical situations, simulation aims to give students opportunity to reason through a clinical problem and make decisions, without the potential for harming actual patients. Educators in nursing are contributing to simulation learning in diverse and creative ways. Yet much of their craft is not being widely disseminated because educators are not always confident in publishing their work. This paper aims to stimulate creative development in simulation by pr

Exploring student nurses' and their link lecturers' experiences of reasonable adjustments in clinical placement.

BACKGROUND: student nurses who attend preregistration nursing programmes in the UK are assessed on their academic work and their performance in clinical placement. Some of them require reasonable adjustments to be made in order to support their learning. Although there is national guidance on making reasonable adjustments for academic work, information on this associated with clinical placement is limited. The nursing literature reports varying levels of success in facilitating reasonable adjustments in clinical placement. AIM: to explore the experiences of student nurses who require reasonab

[Project to Decrease the Incidence of Neonatal Hypothermia in the Newborn Center].

BACKGROUND & PROBLEMS: An investigation found that 66.7% of the neonatal hypothermia (body temperature < 36.5°C) cases diagnosed within one hour of transfer from the delivery room in our hospital were affected by a significantly increased risk of physiological abnormalities, which subsequently increased their risk for mortality. Therefore, monitoring and maintaining the normal body temperature of newborn infants are vital in infant care. PURPOSE: This project aimed to improve the current situation of neonatal hypothermia. RESOLUTION: This project was implemented from Oct. 1, 2016 to Oct. 31,

Beyond the Prompt: Leveraging Generative AI and Tanner's Model to Decode Clinical Logic in Undergraduate Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Transitioning from theory to clinical practice is a persistent hurdle in undergraduate nursing programs, largely because traditional teaching methods lack the frequent, iterative practice needed to close the practice-readiness gap. PURPOSE: This article describes an innovative pedagogical approach that integrates Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) with Tanner's Clinical Judgment Model to develop nonlinear, algorithmic thinking patterns. METHODS: Using an "If This, Then That" logic framework, students use GenAI as a "thinking partner" to build clinical logic. The process f

Pedagogical Merit of Storytelling in Nursing Education: A Qualitative Study of Student Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Nurse educators use storytelling in their teaching in an ad hoc manner. The utility and implementation of storytelling in the classroom setting need to be better established. PURPOSE: To establish nursing students' perception of educators' use of storytelling in the classroom. METHODS: This study was an exploratory qualitative investigation, involving the analysis of free-text responses from an anonymous survey. Survey responses were analyzed through thematic analysis. RESULTS: Educators' stories were highly valued by students, as they effectively bridged theory and practice and

Evaluating the introduction of primary nursing: the use of a care plan audit.

A care plan audit was carried out as part of an action research project involving the introduction of primary nursing. The audit tool was based on the Roper, Logan and Tierney Activities of Living model and the nursing process. The audit showed that few changes in documentation had taken place as a result of the introduction of primary nursing. The volume of communications had increased but much of this was not documented on care plans. Other positive changes as a result of introducing primary nursing were found, and both patients and nurses were aware of these.

Testing Off the Clock: Allowing Extended Time for All Students on Tests.

BACKGROUND: Standardized time allotments are typically imposed for administration of nursing tests. There is little evidence to guide the determination of time allotment. When time allotted for tests is too limited, construct irrelevant variance in test scores may be introduced and the reliability of tests may be negatively impacted. METHOD: For test administration, we establish a standard time allotment and offer all students the option of extended time. RESULTS: Many of the students use extended time, reporting that extended time reduces stress. Program outcomes have not been negatively af

Neurological assessment.

Neurological system assessment is an important skill for the orthopaedic nurse because the nervous system has such an overlap with the musculoskeletal system. Nurses whose scope of practice includes such advanced evaluation, e.g. nurse practitioners, may conduct the examination described here but the information will also be useful for nurses caring for patients who have abnormal neurological assessment findings. Within the context of orthopaedic physical assessment, possible neurological findings are evaluated as they complement the patient's history and the examiner's findings. Specific neur

Development of Undergraduate Competencies in Caring for People Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a critical role in reducing health inequities in people experiencing homelessness (PEH), a key social determinant of health. Health disparities specific to PEH are exacerbated by numerous factors, including bias, stigma, and a lack of nursing competency in caring for PEH. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to validate registered nurse key competencies; associated knowledge, skills, and attitudes; and concepts, content, and learning activities to serve as an educational framework in providing care for PEH. METHODS: Twenty-four nursing experts on the care of PEH rat

Economic evaluation of specialist cancer and palliative nursing: a literature review.

Little progress has been made in economic evaluation of specialist cancer and palliative care nursing. A literature review of economic studies of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) was undertaken to assess how the measurement of economic outcomes has been tackled in the literature to date. The initial search found 400 studies. Abstracts from all the studies were reviewed but only 17 studies met the basic criteria for inclusion, reporting primary cost and outcomes data, and clearly specifying the role of a CNS. All of the studies but one focused on direct patient care rather than other CNS roles

Enhancing surgical nurses' patient education: development and evaluation of an intervention.

This research tested whether staff nurses could provide enhanced patient education and whether increases in education improved surgical patient outcomes. A protocol for patient education was developed from earlier research. Then a multifocal intervention was implemented to motivate and teach staff nurses and to increase structural support for patient education. Following the intervention, patients reported receiving more preoperative information and psychosocial support, but not skills training. These increases occurred without measurable opportunity costs in other areas of nurses' work and ge
