Rethinking nursing faculty workforce economics: From single-income appointments to portfolio-based academic roles.

The United States nursing faculty shortage is commonly framed as a shortage of qualified educators caused by inadequate salaries. In 2025, nursing schools reported 1,588 full-time faculty vacancies and turned away 92,672 qualified applications from baccalaureate and graduate programs. This structured analytic essay argues that the nursing faculty shortage is also a labor-participation problem: terminally prepared nurses may be qualified for academic roles but unwilling to accept the compensation, workload, and professional constraints of faculty employment. Drawing on workforce data, research,

Newly graduated and nurse resident competencies: Perceptions of nurse faculty and acute care hospital leaders in the state of Maryland.

BACKGROUND: The many educational pathways to obtain a professional nursing degree create confusion among healthcare leaders about new graduate nurses' (NGNs) competency expectations when entering practice. PURPOSE: This research sought to identify, among Maryland nursing academic and practice leaders, a standard set of NGN competencies after completing their prelicensure program and nurse residency program (NRP) at 12 months. METHOD: A mixed-method approach was used, including a survey of 109 outcome statements and faculty and practice leader focus groups. RESULTS: Results suggested that 90

Artificial Intelligence as an Educational Innovation in Nursing Simulation: The Avatar Will See You Now.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based education is central to nursing curricula but is resource-intensive, particularly when intended to support repeated, low-stakes practice. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly explored as a strategy to extend simulation-based learning. PROBLEM: Traditional simulation models limit learner access to preparatory rehearsal and individualized feedback due to faculty time and infrastructure constraints. APPROACH: We developed and integrated AI-driven interactive avatars as an adjunct to faculty-led nursing simulation at a large, research-intensive school of nurs

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Future of Nursing Education.

Nursing is the largest health profession, with nearly 4 million providers practicing across acute, primary, and public health care settings. In response to the pandemic, nursing schools halted on-site course delivery and redesigned programs to attenuate risks to students and faculty. Key challenges faced by schools included financial cutbacks, rapid increases in online learning technology, maintaining student academic progression, disruption to clinical learning opportunities, and meeting accreditation standards, while addressing the stress and loss experienced by faculty, staff, and students.

Nursing research reframed by the inescapable reality of practice: a personal encounter.

This paper describes how an innocent venture outside the confines of academia to update my nursing skills completely changed the focus of my research. I was deeply involved in the theoretical development of my thesis, which I thought was a feminist exploration of the meaning of health for mid-life women. I was immersed in feminist theory and was exploring the work of the French Feminists. I had written comprehensive draft chapters about nursing, women's bodies and science. While I was absorbed in my theoretical exploration I decided to venture back into practice to improve my nursing skills. I

The practice ready Doctor of Nursing Practice-prepared nurse: A call to action.

BACKGROUND: More than two decades after the inception of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, confusion persists about the competencies that DNP-prepared nurses bring to practice. Despite growth in programs nationwide, DNP projects often lack methodological rigor, resulting in variable outcomes and unclear stakeholder value. PURPOSE: To ensure consistency, programs must adopt a competency-based approach that prepares nurses to lead evidence-based practice/quality improvement, program evaluation, and policy analysis initiatives. METHODS: The Mountain Model provides a clear framework a

Moral distress in public health practice: Case studies from nursing education.

Moral distress in critical care nursing has been well studied; however, there is a gap in the literature related to moral distress among nurses and nursing students practicing in the community. This paper describes moral distress experienced during participation in the Interprofessional Care Access Network, a community-based nurse-led education and practice program providing longitudinal care coordination for underserved individuals and families in rural communities and urban neighborhoods. Two case studies represent client situations resulting in moral distress for nursing faculty and student

The doctor of nursing practice and nursing education: highlights, potential, and promise.

The success of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs have exceeded everyone's expectations and resulted in increased interest in doctoral education in nursing. A shortage of doctorally prepared nurse educators continues to plague the profession and has a severe impact on the ability of schools of nursing to educate future generations of nurses. As a terminal degree in nursing practice, there is little focus on DNP graduates who are prepared as educators. To remedy this deficit, this article will therefore discuss and highlight (a) the significant potential of the DNP to mitigate the cu

Application of an empowerment model to improve civility in nursing education.

Incivility within nursing education presents clear challenges to both students and faculty. The consequences of incivility extend beyond the educational process and into practice, thereby creating an urgent need for a framework that can guide faculty in the efforts to improve and maintain civility in nursing education. This article reviews the complex problem of incivility in nursing education and utilizes evidence in the application of an empowerment model (Worrell et al., 1996) as a framework to set the standard of civility and one that will guide intervention in the unfortunate event that i
