Decreasing urinary tract infections through staff development, outcomes, and nursing process.

For patients with indwelling catheters, even with current standards of care and evidence-based practice, urinary tract infections continue to be a problem. Data were gathered on urinary catheter usage in a large, rural acute care hospital, and outcomes profiles were developed (including mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and costs). An innovative poster and video approach focusing on alternatives to urinary catheterization, early discontinuance of catheters, and proper insertion and care techniques were used to educate nursing staff and improve outcomes.

Nursing Process Documentation and Use of Standardized Nursing Terminology (NANDA-I, NOC, NIC) in Undergraduate Nursing Students: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed-Methods Study.

INTRODUCTION: The nursing process (NP) is a framework for planning and documenting nursing care. Standardized nursing language (SNL), including NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC, supports consistent documentation and demonstrates nursing contributions to patient outcomes. Understanding students' use of NP and SNL is important for improving nursing education and care quality. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the quality of undergraduate nursing students' NP documentation, including the use of NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC, and explored perceived barriers to implementing NP and SNL in clinical practice. METHODS:

Improving Nursing Quality Through On-Site Supervision: A Process Management Intervention Guided by the Structure-Process-Outcome Model.

AIM(S): To develop and evaluate an Structure-Process-Outcome (SPO) model-based on-site supervision program for nursing process management, and to assess its impact on nursing compliance, competency, patient satisfaction, and adverse events. BACKGROUND: The SPO model provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating healthcare quality, yet its translation into practical on-site nursing supervision tools remains limited. Nursing quality assessments frequently emphasize retrospective outcome indicators while offering limited insight into real-time procedural adherence. METHOD(S): A pre-post qua

Identification of nursing workload in the Sterile Processing Department.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the workload in the Sterile Processing Department as a parameter for the method of nursing staff sizing. METHOD: Quantitative, observational study conducted in four hospitals in the city of São Paulo, in three steps: mapping of activities in work positions; determination of the standard processing time of materials; and establishment of the average daily workload. RESULTS: In the 15 mapped work positions, 1315 samples of time were obtained. As the time values did not show significant differences, it was possible to determine the standard processing time of materials.

Exploring the empowerment process in hip arthroplasty patients: Insights from rehabilitation nursing.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has led to an increased incidence of hip osteoarthritis, a condition that frequently requires surgical intervention to restore functionality and relieve pain. Hip Arthroplasty (HA) constitutes a major therapeutic option; however, it may entail physical and emotional repercussions for individuals undergoing this procedure. In this context, individualized follow-up care is essential, with the Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist (RNS) assuming a central role in promoting autonomy and functional recovery. OBJECTIVE: To analyze Rehabilitation nurses' perceptions of the em

Structure, Process, and Outcomes of Liberian National Nursing and Midwifery Curricular Revisions.

BACKGROUND: The Republic of Liberia has had major disruptions to the education of its health care cadres. Post Ebola, the Resilient and Responsive Health Systems (RRHS) initiative began a new era of capacity building with the support of PEPFAR and HRSA. Nursing and Midwifery serve as the largest healthcare cadres in Liberia. The national nursing and midwifery curricula were overdue for the regulated review and revisions. METHODS: The Science of Improvement was used as the framework to accomplish this multilateral activity. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) stages of improvement

A survey of the ways master's level nursing students learn the research process.

Because of the need for advanced practice nurses to perform more outcome measurement, a survey was conducted in the fall of 1997 to determine how master's level students learned the research process. Three hundred four surveys were mailed to schools with master's programs, and 222 were returned for a return rate of 73%. Sixty-six percent of the programs surveyed required a thesis and/or a research project. However, there was great variation in the research projects. A comprehensive examination was used to measure research ability by 36 programs (16%), either in conjunction with a thesis or res

A nursing process for self-management support in home healthcare: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a key role in providing self-management support to people living with long-term health conditions. Home healthcare patients often face difficulties self-managing because of disabilities and multi-morbidities. In addition, providing healthcare in patients' homes comes with specific challenges since the healthcare providers have less control over the care environment. Therefore, home healthcare is an ideal setting for investigating how nurses provide self-management support in complicated situations. AIM: This study focuses on the process and activities nurses undertake

Nursing Process Data for Health Care Cost Prediction Using Machine Learning: Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning (ML) has been demonstrated to enhance health care cost prediction by handling high-dimensional data and identifying complex patterns. However, current risk-adjustment models rarely incorporate structured nursing information derived from the nursing process. This information captures care needs and human responses to health problems. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of integrating nursing process data into ML-based predictive models of individual health care costs, including cost component analyses, compared with models based solely on sociodemogr
