Clinical and laboratory features of neuromyelitis optica with oligoclonal IgG bands.

Of 23 neuromyelitis optica (NMO) cases, we found two cases with oligoclonal IgG bands (OBs). Both patients were positive for NMO-IgG. Their common features were long disease duration and co-existing autoimmune diseases (myasthenia gravis and sicca syndrome). Although OBs are mostly negative in NMO, which distinguishes it from multiple sclerosis (MS), they can be positive by long-standing autoimmunity, which may not be directly related to NMO.

Erosive amyloidosis of the wrist and knee associated with oligoclonal bands.

We report on a patient who presented with an inflammatory arthropathy clinically, though without a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and in whom investigation subsequently showed erosive amyloidosis with an oligoclonal band. There was no evidence of rheumatoid disease and she has not developed any haematological malignancy. The only other case reported in the literature had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and went on to develop a lymphoplasmacytoid lymphoma.

CSF oligoclonal bands, immunoglobulins, and viral antibodies in progressive myoclonus epilepsy.

We studied CSF and serum samples from 16 patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME). These patients had juvenile-onset PME with evidence of autosomal recessive inheritance and no Lafora bodies. Twelve of the 16 patients with PME had immunologic abnormalities. Oligoclonal gamma bands were seen in six of the eight patients from whom sufficient CSF was available. We describe a patient with meningitis caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. Oligoclonal IgG bands were found in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid during acute and convalescent stages of the illness, and results of liver function tests were abnormal. Acute attacks of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection in humans can be added to the list of diseases associated with cerebrospinal fluid oligoclonal IgG.
