Ischemic Optic Neuropathies: Current Concepts.

Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) is the term ascribed to optic nerve disease that is the result of a transient or permanent interruption of the blood supply to any portion of the optic nerve. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) refers to ischemia of the optic nerve head, whereas posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (PION) indicates ischemia of the posterior optic nerve. IONs are primarily classified as arteritic ION and non-arteritic ION. A subset of ION that occurs around the time of surgery is termed peri-operative ION. These phenomena will be discussed as distinct entities.

Visual dysfunction in retinal and optic nerve disease.

Visual perceptions seen with retinal and optic nerve disease may overlap with those resulting from retrochiasmal disorders. A few disorders typically present with distinctive perceptions, but the majority have less specific symptoms. Features include whether or not the visual phenomena are negative or positive, monocular or binocular, and the location and form of any deficits. Among negative phenomena, transient visual loss usually is the result of ischemic disease, but particular precipitants may suggest demyelination or photoreceptor degeneration. The pattern and location of visual field def

Unilateral syphilitic optic perineuritis presenting as the big blind spot syndrome.

Unilateral swelling of the optic nerve head in the absence of demonstrable optic nerve dysfunction (the big blind spot syndrome) has been described as an idiopathic self-limited phenomena. We report two patients who manifested this syndrome due to syphilitic optic perineuritis. Although unilateral syphilitic optic neuritis has been well described, optic perineuritis has been described previously only as a bilateral condition. The cases emphasize the need to consider syphilis in conditions affecting the optic nerve either unilaterally or bilaterally with or without an associated optic neuropath

Hot Electron-Informed Quantum Plasmonics in Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Nanocavities.

We develop a novel approach to ultrafast optical modulation of quantum-mechanical phenomena at the interface of plasmonic metals. Focusing on efficient and versatile nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities, we discuss indirect control of plasmonic properties through laser-induced hot electron injection. Overcoming the limitations precluding the observations of laser-driven mesoscopic phenomena in the time domain with state-of-the-art amplified sources, our proposed experimental approach can be readily realized without irreversible optical damage and holds immense potential for the future

[Functional aspects of intraocular lens replacement].

Advances in surgical techniques and intraocular lens (IOL) design have reduced the incidence of complications requiring lens removal and replacement. However, complications requiring IOL removal/replacement may still occur in clinical practice. In addition to the main indications for IOL replacement, such as incorrect IOL power calculation, IOL opacification, damage to the IOL haptics, IOL dislocation, decentration, or displacement, there are less common causes associated with disturbing light phenomena, optical aberrations, and low uncorrected visual acuity at preferred viewing distances. We

Polarization-Dependent Forces and Torques at Resonance in a Microfiber-Microcavity System.

Spin-orbit interactions in evanescent fields have recently attracted significant interest. In particular, the transfer of the Belinfante spin momentum perpendicular to the propagation direction generates polarization-dependent lateral forces on particles. However, it is still elusive as to how the polarization-dependent resonances of large particles synergize with the incident light's helicity and resultant lateral forces. Here, we investigate these polarization-dependent phenomena in a microfiber-microcavity system where whispering-gallery-mode resonances exist. This system allows for an intu

Optical Vortex Harmonic Generation Enabled by Confinement-Induced Photonic Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Strong photonic spin-orbit coupling arises under tight optical confinement in a subwavelength waveguide, where propagating fields exhibit spin-orbit entanglement. To date, while the confinement-induced spin-orbit coupling has been investigated only in linear optics, its role in nonlinear optical processes remains largely unexplored. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration and theoretical analysis of unconventional nonlinear optical frequency conversion enabled by the confinement-induced spin-orbit coupling. By pumping a silica optical nanofiber with a spin-polarized Gaussian laser

Light-scattering-induced artifacts in a complex polymer gel dosimetry phantom.

Certain polymer gels become turbid on exposure to ionizing radiation, a property exploited in medical dosimetry to produce three-dimensional dose maps for radiotherapy. These maps can be read using optical computed tomography (CT). A test phantom of complex shape ("layered tube") was developed to investigate the optical properties of polymer gel dosimeters when read using optical CT. Extinction coefficient profiles from tomographically reconstructed slices of the phantom exhibited several artifacts. A simple model invoking scattered light in the gel was able to account for all artifacts, which

Anatomical correlate of positive spontaneous visual phenomena: a voxelwise lesion study.

OBJECTIVES: Visual phenomena such as phosphenes, photopsias, or complex visual hallucinations occur in patients with lesions affecting the occipital, parietal, or temporal lobe. Whether these phenomena are provoked by lesions in specific anatomical regions is still uncertain. To determine which brain regions might be involved in such visual phenomena, we used new brain imaging and lesion analysis tools that allow a direct comparison with control patients. METHODS: Visual phenomena were investigated in a total of 23 patients with acute infarctions along the visual pathways (6 patients with lef

Ocular retardation (or) in the mouse.

The ocular retardation (or) mutation in mice has been studied morphologically in serial 1 mu sections. This recessively inherited, fully penetrant mutation is characterized by an early arrest of retinal development, aplasia of the optic nerve, cataractous degeneration of the lens, and microphthalmia. We describe early alterations of normally occurring morphogenetic cell death in the optic cup and aberrations of optic fissure formation which appear to precede the arrest of retinal and optic nerve development. The subsequent disappearance of central retinal vessels and cataract formation are int

X-ray-induced luminescence and optical absorption in DNA films.

For DNA films, X-irradiated at 77 K, a comparative study was performed on (a) light emission (fluorescence and phosphorescence) during irradiation, (b) afterglow and thermoluminescence, (c) optical absorption after irradiation, and (d) free-radical reactions in similar gamma-irradiatied DNA samples. Spectra are reported for the various kinds of light emission and for the optical absorption. From temperature-dependence studies, it was concluded that the light-emission phenomena are unrelated to the reactions of the free radicals as studied by electron paramagnetic resonance. The optical absorpt

MRI demonstrates restricted diffusion in distal optic nerve in atypical optic neuritis.

A 4-year-old healthy girl with acute visual loss in the right eye had ophthalmoscopic evidence of a swollen optic disc combined with central retinal artery and vein occlusion in the affected eye. MRI showed that the intraorbital optic nerve on the affected side was thickened and enhancing. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed restricted diffusion in the distal intraorbital segment of the optic nerve, consistent with infarction attributed to compression or inflammation of the vessels serving the optic nerve and retina. Although such clinical phenomena have been described previously, this is the fi

[Streak retinoscopy. Optical principles and practical recommendations].

The optical principles of streak retinoscopy are demonstrated by diagrams and by optical models. The phenomena observed in the proband's pupil are being explained in two ways: In the first explanation, the image on the proband's retina and its movements are considered, or rather their projection into space; this explanation corresponding to the term "retinoscopy" is commonly used in English textbooks. In the second explanation, the limitations of the light bundle by the proband's and the observer's pupils are considered; hence the term skiascopy (sigma kappa iota alpha = shadow), commonly used

Efficient Prediction of Highly Anisotropic Excitonic Properties in the Layered Antiferromagnet CrSBr via Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory.

CrSBr, a layered anisotropic van der Waals antiferromagnet, has recently emerged as a versatile platform where strong coupling between optical excitations and magnetic order enables magneto-optical control at low dimensions. While experiments have progressed rapidly, predictive and reliable ab initio descriptions remain limited to self-consistent, many-body perturbation theory, which is computationally expensive and technically challenging. Here, we present an alternative approach that accurately predicts the electronic and optical properties of CrSBr at substantially lower computational cost,

Uhthoff's phenomena in MS--clinical features and pathophysiology.

In the late 19(th) century, Wilhelm Uhthoff reported on a series of patients with acute optic neuritis who manifested similar recurrent, stereotyped visual symptoms that were of paroxysmal onset, short in duration, and reversible. These 'Uhthoff's phenomena', which are a feature of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating diseases, can be triggered by factors including the perimenstrual period, exercise, infection, fever, exposure to high ambient temperatures, and psychological stress. Here, we characterize the clinical, pathophysiological and neurotherapeutic challenges associated with

Embolic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

The presumed cause of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is atherosclerotic vascular changes. Small-vessel occlusive vascular disease most likely causes occlusion of one or more posterior ciliary arteries, compromising blood flow to the optic nerve head and choroid. We present the case of a 59-year-old black man with cholesterol emboli within the retinal vasculature combined with a clinical picture of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and choroidal nonperfusion demonstrated by i.v. fluorescein angiography. We believe this is evidence that, in a rare case, embolic phenomena may be the cause of
