The relative roles of the otolith organs and semicircular canals in producing space motion sickness.

Inflight and post-landing "immunity" to the "coriolis sickness susceptibility test", observed during the Skylab M131 experiment, suggests that the otolith organs play a major role in space motion sickness (SMS). This view is supported by the report that ocular counter-torsion asymmetries correlate with SMS incidence and severity. Further data indicate that sensory-motor adaptation to microgravity includes a process whereby central interpretation of otolith signals is biased from "tilt" toward translation. However, unexpected responses to linear acceleration suggest the importance of gravicepto

Retinoid X receptor in motion: Subtype-specific organization and dynamics of condensate-like assemblies.

Biomolecular condensates have emerged as important regulators of gene expression, yet their contribution to nuclear receptor function remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that retinoid X receptors (RXRs) form distinct condensate-like assemblies, the properties of which depend on receptor subtype, ligand binding, and subcellular localization. RXRα, RXRβ, and RXRγ exhibit marked differences in spatial organization and molecular dynamics, indicating subtype-specific modes of higher-order receptor organization. Deletion analyses identify the intrinsically disordered AB region as a deter

Toward Optimized Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) and Compartmental T2 Mapping in Abdominal Organs.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively assess the bias in the intravoxel incoherent motions (IVIM)-derived pseudo-diffusion volume fraction (f) caused by the differences in relaxation times between the tissue and fluid compartments, and to develop a two-dimensional (b-value-TE) fitting approach for simultaneous T2 and IVIM parameter estimation along with an optimal acquisition protocol for the relaxation-compensated T2-IVIM imaging in the liver. METHODS: Simulations were conducted to investigate the TR- and TE-dependent bias in f when using the IVIM model, and to evaluate the applicability of the 2D T2-I

Collective Motion and Programmable Self-Organization of Rotating Active Particles Manipulated by Magnetic Fields.

Rotating magnetic microparticles are classic active matter systems dominated by competing magnetic dipolar attraction and spin-induced hydrodynamic repulsion, whose collective behaviors under programmable magnetic field remain insufficiently characterized. This work builds a two-dimensional orthogonal Helmholtz coil experimental setup to investigate the collective motion and self-organization of magnetic microparticles. For single-component assemblies, the hexatic order parameter varies non-monotonically with driving frequency and particle area fraction; an intermediate frequency range (60-80

Basilar-membrane motion in the alligator lizard: its relation to tonotopic organization and frequency selectivity.

In the alligator lizard the entire basilar membrane is accessible for measurements of its velocity by the Mössbauer method. Tests of the method indicate (1) the Mössbauer source can be placed on the basilar membrane without altering the signal-transmission properties of the cochlea, and (2) the source adheres to the basilar membrane. Isovelocity curves (IVCs) were constructed by plotting (as a function of tone frequency) the sound-pressure level at the tympanic membrane required to produce a specified velocity amplitude. IVCs from 21 lizards for source locations spanning the length of the basi

The variability of the clinical target volume for rectal cancer due to internal organ motion during adjuvant treatment.

PURPOSE: This study defined the clinical target volume (CTV) for the adjuvant treatment of rectal cancer and applied this definition to multiple CT scans obtained during the typical 5-week course of treatment to measure the modification to the CTV due to internal organ motion that would be needed to define the planning target volume (PTV). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Ten patients with rectal cancer had weekly treatment planning CT scans during adjuvant radiation therapy. All patients were given oral contrast, placed prone on a rigid foam cradle with a depressed area for small bowel exclusion, and

A phantom to simulate organ motion and its effect on dose distribution in carbon ion therapy for pancreatic cancer.

Objective. Carbon ion radiotherapy is a promising radiation technique for malignancies like pancreatic cancer. However, organs' motion imposes challenges for achieving homogeneous dose delivery. In this study, an anthropomorphicPancreasPhantom forIon-beamTherapy (PPIeT) was developed to simulate breathing and gastrointestinal motion during radiotherapy.Approach. The developed phantom contains a pancreas, two kidneys, a duodenum, a spine and a spinal cord. The shell of the organs was 3D printed and filled with agarose-based mixtures. Hounsfield Units (HU) of PPIeTs' organs were measured by CT.

Calculating optic nerve planning organ at risk volume margins for stereotactic radiosurgery using optic nerve motion determined using MRI.

OBJECTIVES: The combination of sharp dose gradients in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and minute optic nerve motion may significantly increase dose to the optic nerves when treating perioptic lesions. The aim of this study was to calculate optic nerve planning organ at risk volume (PRV) margins for CyberKnife SRS treatment planning. METHODS: MRI scans were taken of 10 healthy volunteers looking left, right, up, down, and straight ahead to measure optic nerve motion. The measured optic nerve motion and the uncertainties in the technical accuracy of CyberKnife were used to calculate optic nerv

Normal values for assessment of anal sphincter morphology, anorectal motion, and pelvic organ prolapse with MRI in healthy women.

BACKGROUND: Endoanal MRI and MR defecography are used to identify anal sphincter injury and disordered defecation. However, few studies have evaluated findings in asymptomatic healthy people. The effects of BMI and parity on rectoanal motion and evacuation are unknown. METHODS: In 113 asymptomatic females (age 50 ± 17 years, Mean ± SD) without risk factors for anorectal trauma, anal sphincter appearance, anorectal motion, and pelvic organ prolapse were evaluated with MRI. The relationship between age, BMI, and parity and structural findings were evaluated with parametric and non-parametric te

Rotisserie-like motion enables guest transport in a nonporous organic crystal involving a diboron host.

We describe a nonporous organic crystal that exhibits a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) desolvation. The crystal is based on a boron host that contains an azopyridyl linker. The molecules in the single crystal exhibit novel rotisserie-like movement upon guest release (i.e. benzene) that involves (i) rotation and (ii) stretching of the azopyridyl axle, and (iii) tilting of a boronic ester wheel. A crystalline intermediate isolated supports the rotisserie-style movement of the host.

Body-templated printing of a large-area and imperceptible organic sensing interface for skin motion recognition.

Skin motions provide rich information about our gestures, bodily status, and environmental interactions. However, large-area detection, sensing resolution, and imperceptibility have been a trilemma for current technologies to truthfully record skin motions. Here, we report a body-templated printing strategy to create a conformal sensing interface for large-area and subtle skin motion detection. Using a mild airflow to guide the deposition of an organic semiconducting ink, a sensing path is directly created to conform with skin topologies at the microscale and adapt with irregular human surface

[Specific features of the motor function of the digestive organs in persons with different degree of resistance to motion sickness].

The effect of three exposures to Coriolis acceleration on the frequency and amplitude of fasting stomach contractions was investigated in 6 resistant and 16 susceptible to motion sickness test subjects. After tests all of them underwent gastroduodenoscopy and 4 subjects from each group were subjected to echography to measure gall bladder contractility in response to glucose-milk loads. After tests the motor activity of the stomach increased slightly in resistant subjects due to an increase of the amplitude and a slight decrease of biopotential frequency. During gastroscopy antral and pyloric s

Turning Rattling Motions from Phonon Scatterers to Thermal Conductivity Enhancers in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

Conventional rattling motions of guest species in porous materials suppress the thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. Here, we demonstrate a paradigm shift: rattling can be engineered into a thermal conductivity enhancer. Using molecular dynamics and phonon analysis of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TCF-1) loaded with xenon, we show that strengthening the host-guest interaction drives a transition from long-range diffusive (off-center) to localized (on-center) rattling. Reducing the guest mass in the on-center regime further intensifies localization. Both strategies boost thermal c

Intraoperative liver deformation and organ motion caused by ventilation, laparotomy, and pneumoperitoneum in a porcine model for image-guided liver surgery.

BACKGROUND: Image-guidance promises to make complex situations in liver interventions safer. Clinical success is limited by intraoperative organ motion due to ventilation and surgical manipulation. The aim was to assess influence of different ventilatory and operative states on liver motion in an experimental model. METHODS: Liver motion due to ventilation (expiration, middle, and full inspiration) and operative state (native, laparotomy, and pneumoperitoneum) was assessed in a live porcine model (n = 10). Computed tomography (CT)-scans were taken for each pig for each possible combination of

Quantification of Organ Motion in Male and Female Patients Undergoing Long-Course Radiation Therapy for Rectal Cancer in the Supine Position.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported data on the internal rectal motion of patients with rectal cancer treated in the prone position. With the introduction of intensity modulated techniques, more patients are treated in the more reproducible supine position. Data informing specific margins for this treatment position are sparse, as are data comparing rectal motion characteristics and factors in male and female patients. The purpose of this retrospective study was to quantify and compare the interfractional rectal movement characteristics of male and female patients with rectal cancer treate

A Feasibility Study of Hybrid Deep-Learning Prediction with Online Adaptation of Breathing Irregularities for Long-Term Internal Organ Motion During Radiotherapy.

IntroductionAlthough long short-term memory (LSTM) networks have been tested to predict short-term respiratory motion, their performance in long-term forecasting under breathing irregularities must be assessed. We aim to evaluate and enhance the long-term prediction of internal motion from an external surrogate using subject-specific LSTM models through a hybrid, adaptive approach.MethodsConcurrent internal navigator and external bellows respiratory-motion waveforms were acquired for ten volunteers during two four-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (4DMRI) scans lasting 3-10 min each. Nanoscale motion of organic π-conjugated molecules: exploring van der Waals forces, friction, and quantum effects.

The single-molecule dynamics of π-conjugated organic molecules on surfaces is fundamental for applications ranging from catalysis to molecular electronics. Adsorption and diffusion, in particular of organic aromatics, are typically driven by van der Waals forces, energy dissipation in terms of friction, and quantum effects, making them ideal for probing surface energy landscapes. However, their fast motion at thermal equilibrium poses experimental challenges. Recent advances have provided unprecedented insights into the diffusion mechanisms of several organic molecules on metallic and graphiti
