Nosocomial Bacteria Inhibition with Polymyxin B: In Silico Gene Mining and In Vitro Analysis.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria present a significant public health challenge; such pathogens exhibit reduced susceptibility to conventional antibiotics, limiting current treatment options. Cationic non-ribosomal peptides (CNRPs) such as brevicidine and polymyxins have emerged as promising candidates to block Gram-negative bacteria. To investigate the capability of bacteria to biosynthesize CNRPs, and specifically polymyxins, over 11,000 bacterial genomes were mined in silico. Paenibacillus polymyxa was identified as having a robust biosynthetic capacity, based on multiple polymyxin gene clusters

Biosynthetic Gene Clusters in Sequenced Genomes of Four Contrasting Rhizobacteria in Phytopathogen Inhibition and Interaction with Capsicum annuum Roots.

Through screening of rhizobacteria, species that effectively suppress phytopathogens and/or promote plant growth are found. Genome sequencing is a crucial step in obtaining a complete characterization of microorganisms for biotechnological applications. This study aimed to sequence the genomes of four rhizobacteria that differ in their inhibition of four root pathogens and in their interaction with chili pepper roots to identify the species and analyze differences in the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for antibiotic metabolites and to determine possible phenotype-genotype correlations. Improvement of anti-nutritional effect resulting from β-glucanase specific expression in the parotid gland of transgenic pigs.

β-Glucan is the predominant anti-nutritional factors in monogastric animal feed. Although β-glucanase supplementation in diet can help to eliminate the adverse effects, enzyme stability is substantially modified during the feed manufacturing process. To determine whether the expression of endogenous β-glucanase gene (GLU) in vivo can improve digestibility of dietary β-glucan and absorption of nutrients, we successfully produced transgenic pigs via nuclear transfer which express the GLU from Paenibacillus polymyxa CP7 in the parotid gland. In three live transgenic founders, β-glucanase activiti

Growth-Promoting Characteristics of Fungal and Bacterial Endophytes Isolated from a Drought-Tolerant Mint Species Endostemon obtusifolius (E. Mey. ex Benth.) N. E. Br.

Endophytes are primarily endosymbiotic bacteria and fungi that colonize the interior tissues of their host plant. They enhance the host plant's growth and attenuate adverse effects of biological stress. Endophytic species of many indigenous plants are an untapped resource of plant growth-promoting microorganisms that can mitigate abiotic stress effects. Thus, this study aimed to isolate endophytes from the roots and leaves of the medicinal plant Endostemon obtusifolius to evaluate their in vitro growth-promoting capacities and drought tolerance and to characterize the most promising species. Integrated use of phosphate-solubilizing Bacillus subtilis strain IA6 and zinc-solubilizing Bacillus sp. strain IA16: a promising approach for improving cotton growth.

Mineral nutrition of crop plants is one of the major challenges faced by modern agriculture, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. In alkaline calcareous soils, the availability of phosphorus and zinc is critically less due to their fixation and precipitation as complexes. Farmers use fertilizers to fulfill crop requirements, but their efficacy is less, which increases production costs. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can improve the availability of crop nutrients through solubilizing the insoluble compounds of phosphorus and zinc in soil. In the present study, a total of 40

Studying microbially induced corrosion on glass using ToF-SIMS.

Microbially induced corrosion (MIC) is an emerging topic that has huge environmental impacts, such as long-term evaluation of microbial interactions with radioactive waste glass, environmental cleanup and disposal of radioactive material, and weathering effects of microbes. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), a powerful mass spectral imaging technique with high surface sensitivity, mass resolution, and mass accuracy, can be used to study biofilm effects on different substrates. Understanding how to prepare biofilms on MIC susceptible substrates is critical for proper ana

β-Glucanase specific expression in the parotid gland of transgenic mice.

The feasibility of using the pig parotid secretory protein promoter to drive the β-glucanase transgene expression in mouse parotid glands was examined in this study. The parotid gland-specific vector expressing β-glucanase gene (GLU, from Paenibacillus polymyxa CP7) was constructed. Transgenic mice were produced by the pronuclear microinjection. Both PCR and Southern blot analysis showed that the mice carried the β-glucanase gene and the β-glucanase gene could be stably inherited. Furthermore, RT-PCR and northern blot analysis indicated that it was specifically expressed in the parotid. The β-

Bacteria surface charge varies across species and is independent of cell wall type.

Variation in the surface charge of the cell envelope across bacterial species is not well understood. The absence of systematic investigations comparing taxonomically diverse bacterial species has led to confusion about the influence of cell wall type (i.e. Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria) on surface charge. In this study, dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to determine surface charge via zeta potential measurements of 12 phylogenetically diverse bacterial species spanning four bacterial phyla. Surface charge of six Gram-positive species (Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus thermophi
