[Palatal aponeurosis and the insertion of the tensor muscle of the soft palate. An anatomic study and clinical applications].

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of the anatomy of soft palate muscles is of great interest in cleft palate surgery, in surgical correction of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and in excision of maxillo-facial carcinomas. Some authors described the palatal aponeurosis as the expansion of the tendon of the two tensor veli palatini muscles, others stated that the palatal aponeurosis is a distinct anatomic entity. METHOD: Ten dissections of the soft palate have been performed to improve our knowledge of its anatomy. RESULTS: The palatal aponeurosis is a distinct anatomic entity continuous with the perio

Electromyographic Evaluation of Masticatory Muscles in a Young Patient with Crossbite Treated with Rapid Palatal Expander: A Case Report.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to investigate by electromyographic (EMG) surface analysis whether and how the variations in the occlusion due to the correction of the posterior crossbite using a rapid palatal expander (RPE) is accompanied by changes in the activity of the elevator muscles in the pediatric patients. BACKGROUND: Posterior crossbite is a disgnathic jaw relationship common in patients undergoing growth. In the last 10 years, several studies demonstrated the effectiveness and reproducibility of surface EMG in the objective evaluation of temporal muscle and masseter

Effect of Dissection and Reconstruction of Palatal Muscles on Morphological Features and Ultrastructure of the Oral Musculature in Cats.

The study was designed to determine the effect of dissection and reconstruction of palatal muscles on muscle morphology in cats. 27 cats were randomly divided into three groups according to the extent of muscle dissection from the palatal midline. All dissections were performed from the posterior border of the hard palate, and the muscles were allowed to reconstruct over time. The morphological features were determined by hematoxylin and eosin staining of tissue sections, and ultrastructure was observed under a transmission electron microscope. As a result, no obvious differences were evident

Dislocated Tongue Muscle Attachment and Cleft Palate Formation.

In Pierre Robin sequence, a retracted tongue due to micrognathia is thought to physically obstruct palatal shelf elevation and thereby cause cleft palate. However, micrognathia is not always associated with palatal clefting. Here, by using the Bmp7-null mouse model presenting with cleft palate and severe micrognathia, we provide the first causative mechanism linking the two. In wild-type embryos, the genioglossus muscle, which mediates tongue protrusion, originates from the rostral process of Meckel's cartilage and later from the mandibular symphysis, with 2 tendons positive for Scleraxis mess

Soft palate muscle activity in response to hypoxic hypercapnia.

We studied the effects of increasing respiratory drive on electromyographic (EMG) soft palate muscle (SPM) activity in nine anesthetized tracheostomy-breathing dogs during hypoxic hypercapnia (HH) with a 14% O2-8% CO2-78% N2 inspired gas mixture. Moving time average EMG activity was recorded from palatinus (PAL), levator veli palatini (LP), and tensor veli palatini (TP) muscles (with bipolar fine-wire electrodes) and diaphragm (DIA; with bipolar hook electrodes). During HH, peak inspiratory DIA activity increased from 18.8 +/- 1.3 to 30.1 +/- 2.0 arbitrary units and minute ventilation increase

Soft Palate Mucosal Adhesion with Muscle Release: An Option in "Wide" Cleft Palates in a Cohort in Southern Africa.

OBJECTIVE: Comparison of speech outcomes in 2 similar groups of "wide" cleft palate. One received a Furlow double-opposing Z- plasty (FZP) versus a group (non-FZP) that received only a muscle release at the second stage after both received a soft palate mucosal adhesion (SPA) at the first stage. METHODS: Retrospective review. Thirty-three patients (non-FZP) versus 29 patients (FZP) between 2010 and 2016. Both groups had SPA at approximately 6 months of age. After 12 months, an FZP with hard palate closure was performed in the FZP group. in the non-FZP group, only the muscle was released from

Styloid, velar, and pharyngeal muscles in cleft palate. Anatomical findings in elderly cadaver with unrepaired cleft palate.

Dessection of the musculature of the palate, pharynx, and styloid process was carried out in a cadaver aged 78 years with an unrepaired complete cleft palate. A new muscle named "the accessory stylohyoid" was found to be attached to the styloid process and the lesser cornu of the hyoid bone bilaterally. Anatomical changes in other muscles especially the stylopharyngeus and palatopharyngeus are described. The functions of these muscles are discussed on the basis of the anatomical findings and previous observations of other investigators.

[The age-related functional characteristics of the facial and soft palatal muscles in healthy children based on rheo- and electromyographic data].

Rheo- and electromyographies were used to examine facial and soft palate muscle functions in 120 children aged 4 to 12 years. The findings evidence that the blood flow intensity and velocity reduce with age, as does the response to the functional test; the vascular tone increases. The bioelectric activity of the above-mentioned muscles grows with age, this evidencing the development of a child's neuromuscular and vascular systems.

The electrical activity of the masticatory muscles in children with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding masticatory muscle function in children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is limited. As a consequence, research on masticatory muscle activity in cleft subjects is needed. AIM: To assess masticatory muscle activity in children surgically treated for CLP as well as identify the possible factors associated with this activity. DESIGN: The sample comprised 82 children with mixed dentition and Class I occlusions (25 children with unilateral CLP and 57 subjects with no cleft abnormalities). A DAB-Bluetooth Instrument (Zebris Medical GmbH, Germany) was used to take

Soft palate muscle responses to negative upper airway pressure.

The afferent pathways and upper airway receptor locations involved in negative upper airway pressure (NUAP) augmentation of soft palate muscle activity have not been defined. We studied the electromyographic (EMG) response to NUAP for the palatinus, tensor veli palatini, and levator veli palatini muscles in 11 adult, supine, tracheostomized, anesthetized dogs. NUAP was applied to the nasal or laryngeal end of the isolated upper airway in six dogs and to four to six serial upper airway sites from the nasal cavity to the subglottis in five dogs. When NUAP was applied at the larynx, peak inspirat

Coordination of velopharyngeal muscle activity during positioning of the soft palate.

The relative contributions of the levator veli palatini, palatoglossus, and palatopharyngeus muscles were assessed relative to a range of positions of the velopharynx during production of the vowels [a] and [i] by four normal adult speakers. The results indicate that velopharyngeal positioning is determined by the relative contributions of the levator veli palatini, palatoglossus, and palatopharyngeus muscles. There was an increase in coefficients of determination (i.e., amount of closure level variability explained) when activity levels of all three muscles are included in the statistical mod

[Electromyography of perioral muscles in the cleft lip and palate patients with crossbite].

In this study, twenty-nine cleft lip and palate patients with anterior crossbite were chosen as study group and twenty-eight normal children, twenty-seven patients with anterior crossbite as the control groups. All subjects were examined with EMG, and found some characters of the perioral muscles activity of the cleft patients. (1) The electromyographic amplitude of the upper lip and chin muscles was higher in cleft patients than that of other two groups during swallowing of saliva (2) Activity of chin muscle in cleft patients and crossbite patients in rest position were higher than that of no

Role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in movement of the soft palate.

To examine the role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in palatal movement, we conducted 1) quantitative measurement of palatal movement by selective stimulation of the tensor and levator muscles, and 2) EMG recording of the two muscles during phonation. The results were: 1) negligible palatal movement upon tensor stimulation, despite a marked velar elevation by levator stimulation; and 2) little EMG activity of the tensor and marked EMG activity of the levator during phonation. It was concluded that the tensor plays no role in the palatal function.
