The brain of the tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis). VI. The brainstem and cerebellum.

The brainstem (midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata) and cerebellum (diencephalic prosomere 1 through to rhombomere 11) play central roles in the processing of sensorimotor information, autonomic activity, levels of awareness and the control of functions external to the conscious cognitive world of mammals. As such, comparative analyses of these structures, especially the understanding of specializations or reductions of structures with functions that have been elucidated in commonly studied mammalian species, can provide crucial information for our understanding of the behavior of less commo

Mitogenomic analysis of Thai Sunda pangolins reveals regional phylogeography and informs conservation management.

Pangolins are considered the most trafficked mammals in the world with all eight species listed on CITES Appendix I. Despite this pervasive threat to their survival, there remains a limited understanding of genetic diversity and connectivity among populations of Asian pangolin species, hampering effective conservation management. We analysed mitogenome sequences of the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) from across their Southeast Asia continental distribution, as well as Borneo. Phylogenetic reconstruction revealed six lineages, with clear separation north and south of the Kangar-Pattani biogeog

Under the scales: Identification of ticks in rehabilitated African pangolins and confiscated scales.

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals globally. Beyond zoonotic concerns related to coronavirus, pangolins serve as hosts for ectoparasites such as ticks, which can be inadvertently transported through illegal wildlife trade and rehabilitation efforts. The transcontinental trafficking of pangolins and their derivatives poses a potential risk of pathogen spillover affecting humans, wildlife, and livestock. Despite these concerns, data on tick infestations in confiscated African pangolins and scales remain scarce. This study aims to identify tick species associated with confiscated pangolins

Molecular Detection of Novel Borrelia Species, Candidatus Borrelia javanense, in Amblyomma javanense Ticks from Pangolins.

A novel Borrelia species, Candidatus Borrelia javanense, was found in ectoparasite ticks, Amblyomma javanense, from Manis javanica pangolins seized in anti-smuggling operations in southern China. Overall, 12 tick samples in 227 (overall prevalence 5.3%) were positive for Candidatus B. javanense, 9 (5.1%) in 176 males, and 3 (5.9%) in 51 females. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the 16S rRNA gene and the flagellin gene sequences of the Borrelia sp., exhibited strong evidence that Candidatus B. javanense did not belong to the Lyme disease Borrelia group and the relapsing fever Borrelia group

Digesta retention time and recovery rates of ants and termites in Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla).

Pangolins are myrmecophagous mammals whose biology and ecology remain poorly studied. Termite mandibles and ant head capsules are the two primary remains found in pangolin feces. Determining the retention time of insect cuticles is important for understanding the digestive physiology of pangolins, while determining the recovery rate of termites and ants in feces is required to estimate the number of these prey items that are consumed by pangolins. In this study, the authors conducted feeding trials with captive Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla). Sixty grams of the fungus-growing termite O

Differences in Oropharyngeal Viromes Between Surviving and Deceased Malayan Pangolins in a Rescue Context.

Pangolins are heavily affected by illegal wildlife trade, but little is known about their viromes during rescue and recovery or their association with survival. Here, oropharyngeal swabs from rescued Malayan pangolins (Manis javanica) were examined by metatranscriptomic sequencing and compared between surviving (S1-S4) and deceased (D1-D4) individuals. Major organs from deceased pangolins were further examined histologically. The oropharyngeal virome was dominated by bacteriophages and arthropod- or environment-associated viral signals, but viral communities differed between outcome groups. De

Surveillance of ticks and associated pathogens in free-ranging Formosan pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla).

Chinese pangolins are critically endangered insectivorous mammals distributed in several South and Southeast Asian countries. In recent years, there has been an increase in spread of tick-borne diseases in both humans and animals worldwide. Currently, limited information is available on ticks and associated pathogens infesting pangolins. The objective of the present study was to survey ticks and associated pathogens in the Formosan pangolin population in Southeastern Taiwan. Free-ranging Formosan pangolins captured during ecological survey were examined for the presence of ticks. DNA extracted

A Hybrid Multi-Strategy Chinese Pangolin Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications.

To tackle the drawbacks inherent in the Chinese Pangolin Optimization (CPO) algorithm, such as uneven population initialization distribution and a tendency to fall into local optimal solutions, this paper proposes an ACDCPO algorithm that integrates boundary-adaptive contraction initialization, Cauchy inverse cumulative distribution mutation, and dynamic opposition-based learning strategies, which effectively enhances the uniformity of population distribution, improves the ability to jump out of local optimum, and strengthens the adaptive coordination between exploration and exploitation. The influence of canine parvovirus infection on the metabolome of captive Chinese and Malaysia pangolins.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection poses a serious threat to pangolins, but the characteristics of the host response at the metabolic level remain unclear. In this study, we used non-targeted fecal metabolomics to systematically analyze differences in fecal metabolites in the Malaysian pangolin and the Chinese pangolin before and after CPV infection. The results indicated that CPV infection significantly altered the fecal metabolic profiles of both pangolin species. In the Malaysian pangolin, post-infection differential metabolites were primarily enriched in lipid metabolic pathways, such as α-

Using community-based crime scripting to elucidate pangolin scale trafficking.

Illegal wildlife trade is accelerating rates of biodiversity loss and undermining conservation. Crime scripting systematically details the crime commission process, informs prevention activities, and is usually based on experts' perspectives. We conducted community-based crime scripting of pangolin scale trade in Cameroon, July-December 2024 in 22 communities in Cameroon (n = 152 participants). Using NVivo 15.1.1 for analysis of perspectives, we identified six enabling conditions for trade and four categories of crime prevention activities. Identifying the crime commission process structure an

Serological evidence of sarbecovirus exposure along Sunda pangolin trafficking pathways.

BACKGROUND: Early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) involved in the illegal wildlife trade in mainland China were identified as hosts of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoVs). Although it is unconfirmed whether pangolins or other traded wildlife served as intermediate hosts for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the trafficking of pangolins presents a clear risk for transmission of viruses with zoonotic and epizootic potential regardless. We have investigated the origins of pangolin ca

Multiple Novel Mosquito-Borne Zoonotic Viruses Revealed in Pangolin Virome.

Swab samples were collected from 34 pangolins in Guangxi Province, China. Metavirome sequencing and bioinformatics approaches were undertaken to determine the abundant viral sequences in the viromes. The results showed that the viral sequences belong to 24 virus taxonomic families. To verify the results, PCR combined with phylogenetic analysis was conducted. Some viral sequences including Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), Getah virus (GETV), and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) were detected. On the basis of the metavirome analysis, seven segments belonging to JEV were further identified through PCR

Pyelonephritis and Cystic Endometrial Hyperplasia in a Captive Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica).

The Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica) is one of the most trafficked animal species globally, and is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. There is limited information on reproductive biology or pathology of this species. We now document the clinical and pathological features of pyelonephritis and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in one of these animals. Ultrasonographic examination revealed pathological changes in the kidneys and uterus. On histopathological examination, there was marked interstitial infiltration of macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes in kidney tissue, fibrinonecrotic

Hepatic lipidosis in nine African white-bellied pangolins (Phataginus tricuspis) from a North American zoologic institution.

INTRODUCTION: The African white-bellied pangolin (Phataginus tricuspis) is an endangered species with a small population under managed care in the United States. Over the course of 4 years, nine pangolins at a single North American zoological institution died or were euthanized with necropsy findings consistent with hepatic lipidosis, representing 9 of 14 mortalities during this time period. METHODS: This report describes hepatic lipidosis in these pangolins (clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, clinicopathologic and postmortem findings) and summarizes clinically relevant predictors of

Transcriptomic Data Reveal Divergent Paths of Chitinase Evolution Underlying Dietary Convergence in Anteaters and Pangolins.

Ant-eating mammals represent a textbook example of convergent evolution. Among them, anteaters and pangolins exhibit the most extreme convergent phenotypes with complete tooth loss, elongated skulls, protruding tongues, and hypertrophied salivary glands producing large amounts of saliva. However, comparative genomic analyses have shown that anteaters and pangolins differ in their chitinase acidic gene (CHIA) repertoires, which potentially degrade the chitinous exoskeletons of ingested ants and termites. While the southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) harbors four functional CHIA paralogs (

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING AND OROTRACHEAL INTUBATION IN CLINICALLY HEALTHY WILD SUNDA PANGOLINS (MANIS JAVANICA) IN SINGAPORE.

Pangolins are amongst the most overexploited species in the world and all eight species of pangolins are threatened with extinction. These animals are rare in zoological collections and often suffer high mortality rates in captivity. Maintaining healthy populations in captivity has become more important with the declining populations in the wild, but knowledge of veterinary care of these animals is limited. Interpreting radiography and ultrasonography images in a patient can be challenging without knowledge of normal findings. The Wildlife Healthcare and Research Center (WHRC) at Mandai Wildli

Long term monitoring of the reproductive behavior of wild Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla).

Observations of Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) in the wild are extremely rare and challenging because of their nocturnal and cryptic activity patterns and low population density. The present article reported the first field observation in eastern Taiwan, from October 4, 2012 to June 16, 2016, on the reproductive behavior of the Chinese pangolin based on the monitoring of a female (LF28) using radiotelemetry and camera traps. During this period, LF28 aged from 1-4.5 years old and gave two single-births, both took place in early December, at 3 and 4 years old, respectively. We recorded th

Brilliant fabrication of multifunctional collagen-based packaging films with rigid-flexible coupling structure bio-inspired by pangolins.

Deformable collagen-based films with superior stability, flexibility and intelligent packaging capabilities remains a substantial challenge. Adopt inspiration from the pangolin's barrier, a biomimetic "rigid-flexible coupling" strategy was employed to develop multifunctional film (Col/DA/ZnO/BW) incorporating collagen (rigid matrix), dibenzaldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (DA-PEG, flexible cross-linker), ZnO nanoparticles (reinforcer) and black wolfberry anthocyanins (BW, pH indicator). Structural analyses revealed the uniform film matrix stabilized through covalent and hydrogen bonding

Virus diversity, wildlife-domestic animal circulation and potential zoonotic viruses of small mammals, pangolins and zoo animals.

Wildlife is reservoir of emerging viruses. Here we identified 27 families of mammalian viruses from 1981 wild animals and 194 zoo animals collected from south China between 2015 and 2022, isolated and characterized the pathogenicity of eight viruses. Bats harbor high diversity of coronaviruses, picornaviruses and astroviruses, and a potentially novel genus of Bornaviridae. In addition to the reported SARSr-CoV-2 and HKU4-CoV-like viruses, picornavirus and respiroviruses also likely circulate between bats and pangolins. Pikas harbor a new clade of Embecovirus and a new genus of arenaviruses. Fu
