OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between sialographic images and clinical symptoms of inflammatory parotid gland diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical symptoms including swelling, pain, the duration of these symptoms, and degree of salivation were examined on 83 parotid glands from 64 patients. Swelling and pain were classified into 4 categories. Duration of any symptom was recorded in months and the degree of salivation was classified into 4 groups by inspection and massage. Sialography was performed and panoramic radiographs were taken later to exa

Parotid gland injuries are accompanied by a large number of sequelae. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of thorough management of these parotid glandinjuries especially at initial presentation in order to minimize the complications that accompany these injuries. A review of the aetiology and management of the existing cases of parotid gland injuries obtained from published journals and internet search as well as a report of two cases managed in our centre is presented in this paper. A total of about 70 cases in the previous literatures were reviewed of which assault was resp

OBJECTIVES: To study the value of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in diagnosis of parotid gland disease (PGD) with different pathological patterns and parotid adenolymphoma (PAL).
METHODS: 57 patients with different kinds of PGD were enrolled and underwent DKI and conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). All patients were categorized into different groups according to their pathological patterns. The result of calculating the value of DKI-derived parameters (Kmean, Krad, Kax, Dmean, Drad, Dax, and FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of DWI were used to study their diagnostic a

Castleman disease is an extremely rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology. It affects the lymphatic chain in anybody region, although the commonest site is the mediastinum. The head and neck region is the second most common site; however, the salivary glands are rarely affected. We report a case of a 29-year-old Asian lady who presented with a 2-year history of an enlarging left parotid mass. Histopathology of the excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Castleman disease.

Castleman disease (CD) is a benign lymphoepithelial disorder characterised by abnormal growth of a lymph node. This disease may be seen anywhere along the lymphatic chain but it usually occurs in the mediastinum. Two clinical types (localised and generalised) and three histopathological types (hyaline vascular, plasma cell, and mixed) have been described. We present a case of a 35-year-old female patient with parotid CD of the hyaline-vascular type as an extremely rare entity. We also discuss recent updates on this disease.

Castleman's disease (CD) is a very rare disorder characterized by non-neoplastic growths in lymph nodes in any body regions, although over 60% of cases are located in the mediastinum. The head and neck is the second most commonly involved site, with up to 14% of cases. Of these, nearly 85% are located in the neck. These lesions rarely occur in the salivary glands. Clinically, CD can be divided into unicentric and multicentric forms. We report an unusual case with unicentric CD presenting as a parotid tumor in a 34-year-old woman. The lesion was found coincidentally during routine cranial magne

INTRODUCTION: Cat scratch disease is an infection due to Bartonella henselae. It is one of the principal causes of benign chronic adenopathy in children or young adults.
CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old woman presented with a left parotid pre-auricular swelling suggesting a pleiomorphic adenoma. The history and complementary tests (ultra sonography, MRI, cytopuncture, B. henselae serology) led to a diagnosis of cat scratch disease. Doxycilline was efficient within 15 days.
DISCUSSION: The parotid localization of cat scratch disease is very rare. When a patient presents with parotid swelling, the d

Cat scratch disease (CSD), due to Bartonella henselae, is a self-limited chronic lymphadenopathy. A previously healthy 22-year-old woman presented with a palpable painful swelling in the right submandibular region accompanied by enlarged cervical lymph nodes. A diagnosis of B. henselae infection was made according to her personal history that divulged frequent contacts with cats and to a high titre of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies for this agent. The patient improved within 1 month without the requirement of antibiotic treatment or surgery. The CSD should always be included in the

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder that can affect lymph nodes of any part of the body including the neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis. The most common involved site is the mediastinum. Parotid gland may be involved as a part of multicentric CD. Unicentric CD with isolated involvement of the parotid is very rare. Diagnosis of this condition is necessary as untreated unicentric CD may progress to multicentric type and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Though there is no specific radiological finding to diagnose CD, recent advances in MRI may help to narrow down the differential d

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare and benign proliferative disease that affects histiocytes. Its etiology remains unclear. Rosai-Dorfman disease primarily affects lymph nodes with many extranodal manifestations present, including cutaneous, pulmonary, ophthalmic, and gastrointestinal. Diagnosis is mainly histologic with the presence of Rosai-Dorfman cells, which demonstrate emperipolesis. We report a case of a 30-year-old man who presented with a facial cutaneous mass and was diagnosed with RDD; he underwent surgical excision

Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by the formation of painless hyperplastic lymph nodes. It can affect any lymph nodes of the body but rarely affects the salivary gland. We describe a patient with unicentric Castleman disease presenting as a parotid tumor and discuss the diagnosis and treatment of Castleman disease. A 39-year-old man had a painless lump on the right side of his face for 1 year. A computed tomography scan showed a well-defined, homogeneous mass in the right parotid gland. The patient underwent a right-sided superficial parotidectomy with pre

Parotid gland is involved in many inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. Many a times, it is difficult to ascertain the type of swelling by clinical examination. The anatomy and various abnormalities of the glands are very easily visualized by high-frequency ultrasound. Ultrasound can confirm the presence of the mass with sensitivity up to 100%. It can demonstrate whether a lesion is located in the parotid gland or outside. It can help in differentiating benign from malignant neoplasms and local staging of the mass in malignant lesions. In addition, ultrasound can identify those entities that

Rosai-Dorfman disease or sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) is a histiocytic proliferative disorder that typically involves the cervical lymph nodes with or without extranodal involvement of the skin, soft tissues, respiratory tract, or virtually any other site of the body. We present a case report of SHML involving the cervical lymph nodes, parotid gland and breast. There is only one other Rosai-Dorfman registered case that involves both breast and parotid disease and no previously published case reports. The patient presented atypically with breast masses found on screen

Kimura's disease (KD) is a rare, chronic inflammatory condition of unknown origin that is more commonly seen in Asia. Lymphadenopathy in head and neck region and subcutaneous swelling are accompanied with increased serum IgE levels. In some cases renal involvement is seen. A 46-year-old male patient was operated on for a painless mass in the superficial lobe of the right parotid gland. Histopathologic examination of the specimen yielded the diagnosis of KD. Kimura's disease, even though rarely encountered, must be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, and KD pati

This report describes a series of 15 patients who presented with masses in the tail of the parotid gland which proved at biopsy to be benign hyperplastic lymphadenopathy similar to lymphoepithelial hyperplasia. There were 11 male and 4 female patients. All had a history of intravenous drug use. Ten patients complained of pain. Six patients had smaller masses on the contralateral side of the gland, whereas seven patients had minor axillary adenopathy. Needle aspiration was performed in 12 patients; although not conclusively diagnostic, it ruled out primary salivary tumors. Thick purulent materi
