Peer-to-Peer Case Review as a Strategy to Improve Sepsis Education in Graduate Medical Education.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted an educational intervention using a peer-to-peer case review process to improve emergency medicine (EM) resident sepsis knowledge and diagnostic confidence. Local quality audits in our academic emergency department (ED) identified poor compliance in addressing adult cases of severe sepsis and septic shock, suggesting an educational gap. We evaluated whether a facilitated, peer-to-peer case review process improved EM resident sepsis knowledge and diagnostic confidence. METHODS: We conducted a single-site, pre-test/post-test educational QI evaluation among senior EM r

Preadolescent Peer Sexual Abuse: A Systematic Literature Review.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide social problem which has received much attention from policy makers, researchers, and practitioners. A considerable portion of CSA research has focused on adult offenders, the result of which is that most of our existing knowledge regarding prevention and intervention has been based on abuse perpetrated by this population. The current literature review, by contrast, was designed to spotlight the phenomenon of preadolescent peer sexual abuse (PAPSA), focusing on children ages 12 and under, using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-An

AI in peer review: can artificial intelligence be an ally in reducing gender and geographical gaps in peer review? A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Gender and geographical disparities have been widely reported in the peer-review process of biomedical journals. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming the publishing system; however, its potential to identify suitable reviewers, and whether it might reduce, replicate or reinforce existing biases in peer review has never been comprehensively investigated. This study sought to determine the usefulness of AI in identifying expert scientists in medicine taking into consideration gender and geographical diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). METHODS: The title and a

Towards a standardized competency-profile for peer-to-peer-teachers in medical education - a systematic mapping review.

BACKGROUND: Medical education research acknowledges "P2P-teaching" as an effective, scalable, and cost-effective possibility for educating students in human medicine. At the same time, the medical field is yet to form an empirically founded and overarching description of necessary P2P-teaching competencies across medical subjects. In order to create an overarching picture of relevant student P2P-teaching competencies in medical education, this article raises the question, "What are the relevant teaching competencies in qualification measures for P2P-teachers in medical education?". METHOD: We

Waterbirth: an integrative analysis of peer-reviewed literature.

INTRODUCTION: Despite a growing body of evidence for waterbirth safety, a myriad of political and cultural issues result in limited use in US hospitals compared to other developed nations. The purpose of this article is to critically analyze the evidence on maternal and neonatal outcomes of waterbirth to help inform evidence-based clinical practice in the United States. METHODS: A literature search was performed using electronic databases CINAHL, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. Thirty-eight studies, including 2 randomized controlled trials and 36 observational studies, were review

Peer Review and the Educational Mission of The American Surgeon.

The American Surgeon, as the official journal of the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC), serves as a central component of the society's educational mission to support the development of surgeons, trainees, and clinical educators across the southeastern United States. Historically, manuscripts originating from annual meeting presentations were reviewed by publication committees rather than through formal peer review. As the journal matured and its citation record and Impact Factor grew in importance, The American Surgeon adopted a uniform policy requiring that all submissions-whether meeting

Peer Support for the Hardly Reached: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities are aggravated when prevention and care initiatives fail to reach those they are intended to help. Groups can be classified as hardly reached according to a variety of circumstances that fall into 3 domains: individual (e.g., psychological factors), demographic (e.g., socioeconomic status), and cultural-environmental (e.g., social network). Several reports have indicated that peer support is an effective means of reaching hardly reached individuals. However, no review has explored peer support effectiveness in relation to the circumstances associated with being h

[Analysis of the evitability of intrapartum asphyxia with a peers review].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the quality of intrapartum care in birth asphyxia cases. METHODS: Prospective analysis of all cases of birth asphyxia in nine maternity units during one year (2010). Birth asphyxia was defined as the combination of at least one clinical factor (Apgar≤7 at 5 minutes, signs of encephalopathy at birth) and at least one biological factor in cord (pH≤7, BD≥12 mmol/L, lactates>10 mmol/L). These cases were analyzed with a peer review from French guidelines 2007. RESULTS: Fifty cases of birth asphyxia were identified. After peer-review, they were defined as 46% non preventable,

Peer-Review Essentials: Reviewing Manuscripts for the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases.

The thoughtful process of peer review allows for the vetting and improvement of scientific work that leads to quality research and, eventually, advancement of the field of retina. Progress in medicine would not occur without dedicated researchers, but just as important are the peer reviewers who take the time assess their work, weigh in on their validity, and help bring these papers to life. Here, we discuss how to effectively review a journal manuscript in a way that helps both the beginning reviewer and the seasoned expert develop a framework to provide meaningful peer review. Although this

Systems versus performance problems: a peer review organization's perspective.

An analysis of Ohio's Medicare data base by the state's Peer Review Organization, using the most common diagnosis-related group in the Medicare population (heart failure and shock), from January 1, 1989 to January 1, 1991, identified 72 cases with confirmed quality-of-care problems. The analysis was performed to determine whether the majority of quality-of-care problems are related to systems or performance deficiencies. Study results indicated that health care workers are being inappropriately blamed for problems that are inherent in the health care system--74% of problems were related to ine

Indigenous excellence: confronting racism and complicity in peer review.

Racism in peer review is a common, structurally embedded, and systemic problem. However, it is often framed as isolated acts of individual-level bias. Racism in peer review manifests across interconnected societal, system, and process levels, shaping who participates in knowledge production, what is deemed credible evidence, and whose work is published. This Indigenous-led Perspective examines racism in peer review through a three-layer framework: (1) societal, (2) system, and (3) process (decision-making and interpersonal), situating peer review as one domain within the broader problem of ant

Peer review in team-based learning: influencing feedback literacy.

BACKGROUND: Peer review in Team-based learning (TBL) exists for three key reasons: to promote reflection on individual behaviours; provide opportunities to develop professional skills; and prevent 'free riders' who fail to contribute effectively to team discussions. A well-developed process that engages students is needed. However, evidence suggests it remains a difficult task to effectively incorporate into TBL. The purpose of this study was to assess medical students' ability to provide written feedback to their peers in TBL, and to explore students' perception of the process, using the conc
