Linguatulosis in food animals and carnivores: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Linguatulosis, caused by Linguatula serrata, commonly known as the tongue worm, primarily affects food animals and carnivores and poses a potential zoonotic risk. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the global prevalence of L. serrata in these hosts. A comprehensive search identified 55 studies involving 36,242 samples from food animals and 1530 samples from carnivores across four continents. The results indicated significant variability in prevalence rates, with food animals showing a pooled prevalence of 19.1 %, and carnivores exhibiting a higher pooled prevalence of 3

New host report of Reighardia sternae in the pomarine jaeger (Stercorarius pomarinus; charadriiformes: stercorariidae) stranded in Northeastern Brazil.

The pomarine jaeger Stercorarius pomarinus (Charadriiformes: Stercorariidae) is a migratory seabird with rare occurrence in the western South Atlantic, including the Brazilian coast. Despite its wide distribution in the Northern Hemisphere, parasitological records for this species are scarce and sporadic. The present study reports the first record of Reighardia sternae (Pentastomida: Reighardiidae) parasitizing the pomarine jaeger in Brazil. In April 2025, an adult female specimen of pomarine jaeger was rescued on the coast of the state of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil, and admitted for rehabil

A Rare Parasite in Cats: Record of a Linguatula serrata Frölich, 1789 (Porocephalida, Linguatulidae) Nymphal Infestation in a Cat in Albania, with a Synopsis and Review of the Literature on L. serrata Infestation in Cats.

Linguatula serrata, commonly known as the dogs' 'tongue-worm', is an arthropod endoparasite of the class Pentastomida infesting chiefly canids as definitive hosts and herbivores as intermediate hosts. Adult L. serrata usually reside in the upper respiratory tract, such as the nasal cavity and sinuses, and the larval stages are encapsulated in various visceral organs, respectively. This report presents the first case of a L. serrata nymphal pulmonary infestation in a cat from Albania and adds to the description of the overall rare cases of this parasitic infestation in domestic cats. Discussion

Reconsidering the risks of Linguatula in Australia: A review of an overlooked introduced parasite.

Linguatula serrata is a globally distributed zoonotic parasite that remains largely overlooked in public health. Although traditionally described as having an indirect life cycle involving carnivorous definitive hosts and herbivorous intermediate hosts, emerging evidence suggests greater complexity in transmission pathways and host associations, with some observations raising the possibility of a direct life cycle. In Australia, L. serrata, likely introduced through domestic animals and livestock during colonisation, is now well established across both introduced and native hosts, indicating s

Verification of the Spotted-Tail Quoll, Dasyurus maculatus, as a Definitive Host for the Pentastomid Linguatula sp. in Australia.

PURPOSE: Specimens of a pentastomid, identified as a nymphal Linguatula serrata, have previously been reported from the nasal cavity of the endangered Australian marsupial, the spotted-tail quoll, Dasyurus maculatus. These specimens were made available for morphological and molecular characterisation to confirm their species identity. METHODS: Specimens were examined by light microscopy. Molecular sequencing attempts were unsuccessful. RESULTS: Examination showed that the specimens were adult pentastomes of the genus Linguatula. Morphological differences are reported between these specimens

Rates of pulmonary infection by pentastomids in lizards species from a restinga habitat in northeastern Brazil.

Pulmonary parasitism by pentastomids was examined in two lizard species inhabiting an area of restinga vegetation (coastal sand dunes) situated in the municipality of Mataraca (6 degrees 29' S and 34 degrees 56' W), on the extreme northern coast of Paraíba State, Brazil. A total of 123 lizards were collected, being 75 specimens of Micrablepharus maximiliani (Gymnophtalmidae) and 48 specimens of Cnemidophorus ocellifer (Teiidae). Only a single species of Pentastomida (Raillietiella mottae) was found parasitizing three females M. maximiliani, with a prevalence of 4% and an average infection inte

Natural history of the parasite Waddycephalus in the Townsville region of north-east Australia.

Waddycephalus is an understudied genus of pentastomids native to Australia and south-east Asia. The genus was recognized in 1922 but there has been little research on these pentastomid tongue worms over the last century. A few observations suggest a complex life cycle through 3 trophic levels. We aimed to add knowledge to the Waddycephalus life cycle in woodland habitats in the Townsville region of north-east Australia. We used camera trapping to identify the most likely first-intermediate hosts (coprophagous insects), we conducted gecko surveys to identify multiple new gecko intermediate host

Global status of neglected human Linguatula infection: a systematic review of published case reports.

Human linguatulosis is a rare but highly specialized pentastomid parasitic infection all around the world. The disease is caused by worm-like parasites which share some morphologic features of arthropods and annelids. The life cycle of Linguatula spp. is provided as an example of pentastomid biology. The adult forms of Linguatula spp. are found in the nasal passages and frontal sinuses of dogs and other canids, domestic animals, and humans. Infestation may occur in the viscera, where immature forms develop in the liver, spleen, lungs, eyes, and other organs, or in the nasopharyngeal area. This

Severe visceral pentastomiasis in an oriental small-clawed otter with functional thyroid carcinoma.

In January 2016, a 20-year-old female oriental small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) from Night Safari in Singapore was euthanized and diagnosed with a thyroid gland carcinoma. Postmortem examination and histology also revealed metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and severe visceral pentastomiasis. Grossly, the lymph nodes were infested, and encapsulation was observed on the visceral serosal surface. Histopathologically, the lymph nodes were encysted by a thick fibrous connective capsule with minimal inflammatory response. Pentastomiasis has been previously reported in the smooth-coated otter

The first Linguatula serrata case in an imported dog in Finland.

Linguatula serrata is a pentastomid parasite infecting carnivores as definitive hosts and herbivores as intermediate hosts. In carnivores, including dogs, it usually parasitises the nasal cavity and sinuses, causing upper respiratory signs. This case report presents the first canine Linguatula case in Finland in an imported dog originating from Spain. In addition to the unremarkable clinical history of the dog, the treatment, parasite's morphology and molecular analysis are described, and the zoonotic potential is discussed.

Prevalence and associated risk factors of Linguatula serrata infection in definitive and intermediate hosts in Iran and other countries: A systematic review.

Linguatula serrata is known as a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasite whose adult form inhabits the upper respiratory system, nasal airways and frontal sinuses of dogs, foxes, cats and other carnivores, which are recognized as its final hosts. Its immature form resides in mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, lungs and spleen of herbivorous and other ruminants, which serve as its intermediate hosts. Both adult and nymphal stages of L. serrata can infect humans, which typically occurs via ingestion of eggs of infected dogs or consumption of raw or undercooked infected viscera of contaminated herbivores. Parasitic infections of the African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) and the ornate Nile monitor (Varanus ornatus) from Nigeria.

The parasitic infections of market derived Osteolaemus tetraspis from the rainforest and Varanus ornatus from locations in the savanna-mosaic and the rainforest of southern Nigeria were investigated. Parasites recovered from O. tetraspis included members of the Pentastomida, Trematoda and Nematoda. An undescribed pentastomid belonging to the family Sebekidae was recovered from O. tetraspis. The same parasite was also found to parasitize V. ornatus from the rainforest. Other parasites found in O. tetraspis were Pseudoneodiplostomum thomasi, Dujardinascaris sp. and larva of a Camallanus sp. Vara

Nasopharyngeal linguatulosis or halzoun syndrome: clinical diagnosis and treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Halzoun syndrome, also known as nasopharyngeal linguatulosis, is a rare entity that is mostly prevalent in Eastern Mediterranean countries. The consumption of raw ovine liver and lymph nodes infested with Linguatula serrata nymphs remains a major cause of the nasopharyngeal symptoms and discomfort associated with the disease. Halzoun syndrome is a clinical diagnosis based on history and presentation. METHODS: Treatment of this disease is still debated; however, our experience reveals that alcohol gargle can be a good option. Proper counselling on the hazards of eating raw liver in

[Linguatula serrata-infection in a dog imported from Romania to Germany].

The pentastomid Linguatula serrata, the so-called "tongue worm", is a nasopharyngeal parasite of dogs widely distributed in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. While linguatulosis was formerly also endemic in Central Europe, it now mainly plays a role as an imported parasitosis. Because L. serrata is known to be a zoonotic agent, a potential infection risk for the owner and other contact persons needs to be considered. Here, a 1.5-year-old, mixed-breed sheepdog, which had been imported from Romania, was presented because of serous nasal discharge and a pharyngeal "throat-clearing" noise. Upon sn

Meat-borne parasites in the Arab world: a review in a One Health perspective.

Meat-borne parasitic zoonoses are generally not well-monitored, and so understanding extent and overall prevalence is problematic. Without sufficient attention, their prevalence can become unexpectedly and unacceptably high. This review sheds light on meat-borne parasites in the Arab world, which includes all the Arab countries situated in the continents of Asia and Africa, with more than 400 million inhabitants distributed in 22 countries. Meat-borne parasites can be divided into two main categories-helminths and protozoa. The main helminths included in this review are Taenia saginata, Taenia
