The Biomechanical Effects of Percussive Therapy Treatment on Jump Performance.

Percussive therapy treatment is one form of myofascial release that has gained popularity amongst the sport community. It has been suggested that percussive therapy treatment may improve range of motion and improve athletic performance, but these claims are largely anecdotal. Currently, the effects of percussive therapy treatment on performance of athletic tasks is relatively unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to assess the effects of percussive therapy treatment on jump performance and passive range of motion. Twenty-six recreationally active college individuals performed co

Lateral fluid-percussion injury leads to pituitary atrophy in rats.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes neuroendocrine dysregulation in up to 40% of humans, which is related to impaired function of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis and contributes to TBI-related co-morbidities. Our objective was to investigate whether hypophyseal atrophy can be recapitulated in rat lateral fluid-percussion injury model of human TBI. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) were acquired from rats at 2 days and 5 months post-TBI. To measure the lobe-specific volumetric changes, manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) scans were acquired from rats at 8 months post-TBI, w

Aquaporin-4 expression in cultured astrocytes after fluid percussion injury.

The development of cytotoxic brain edema resulting in increased intracranial pressure is a major cause of death occurring in the early phase of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Such edema predominantly develops as a consequence of astrocyte swelling. We recently documented that fluid percussion injury (FPI) to cultured astrocytes causes cell swelling. Since aquaporin-4 (AQP4) has been strongly implicated in the development of brain edema/astrocyte swelling in various neurological conditions, this study examined the effect of in vitro trauma on AQP4 protein expression in cultured astrocytes. Alternatives to percussion and postural drainage. A review of mucus clearance therapies: percussion and postural drainage, autogenic drainage, positive expiratory pressure, flutter valve, intrapulmonary percussive ventilation, and high-frequency chest compression with the ThAIRapy Vest.

The purpose of this article is to review published studies on the efficacy of old and new mucus clearance techniques and to develop recommendations for different groups of patients. Mucus clearance is a problem in cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and many other pulmonary conditions. Percussion and postural drainage (P & PD) was the traditional method of facilitating mucus clearance, but the many hazards and contraindications along with the onerous nature and resultant poor patient compliance of this procedure have led to the development of alternative therapies. Research studies with cystic fi

Abdominal Physical Signs and Medical Eponyms: Part I. Percussion, 1871-1900.

BACKGROUND: Percussion is derived from the Latin word to hear and to touch. Percussion of the abdomen is used to detect areas of tenderness, dullness within an area of tenderness suggestive of a mass, shifting dullness representing fluid or blood, splenic, hepatic and bladder enlargement, and free air in the peritoneum. Covered are abdominal signs of percussion attributed as medical eponyms from the time-period beginning in the mid-late nineteenth century. Described is historical information behind the sign, descriptions of the sign, and implication in modern clinical practice. DATA SOURCES:

Clinical use of the patellar-pubic percussion sign in hip trauma.

To assess the reliability and validity of osteophony (patellar-pubic percussion [PPP] test) as a physical diagnostic sign in the evaluation of hip trauma, a prospective study was undertaken of 41 consecutive patients presenting to the emergency department with a history of hip trauma necessitating radiographic examination. Fifteen of 19 (78.9%) patients who presented with a history of hip trauma and a fracture on radiograph were found to have had an abnormal PPP sign by at least one of two raters (P < .0001). Only 1 of 22 (4.6%) patients without evidence of fracture (eg, contusion) had an abno

High-frequency percussive ventilation in acute respiratory failure.

INTRODUCTION: High-frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) is a ventilation mode characterised by high-frequency breaths. This study investigated the impact of HFPV on gas exchange and clinical outcomes in acute respiratory failure (ARF) patients during spontaneous breathing, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and invasive mechanical ventilation (iMV). METHODS: This systematic review included randomised and nonrandomised studies up to August 2023. Inclusion criteria focused on adult ARF patients, HFPV application, comparisons with other ventilation modes, and outcomes related to oxygenation and cl

A physical approach to the automated classification of clinical percussion sounds.

Chest percussion is a traditional technique used for the physical examination of pulmonary injuries and diseases. It is a method of tapping body parts with fingers or small instruments to evaluate the size, consistency, borders, and presence of fluid/air in the lungs and abdomen. Percussion has been successfully used for the diagnosis of such potentially lethal conditions as traumatic and tension pneumothorax. This technique, however, has certain shortcomings, including limitations of the human ear and the subjectivity of the administrator, that lead to overall low sensitivity. Automation of t

High frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV). Principles and technique.

In recent years, the usefulness of high frequency ventilation (HFV) has been clinically reassessed as an alternative to conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV). HFV has often been combined with or in some cases even completely replaced CMV in the attempt to reduce iatrogenic injury. High frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) is a specific mode of HFV that has been successfully applied in the treatment of acute respiratory failure after smoke inhalation; it has also been more widely used in pediatric than in adult patients. This article gives an introduction to and a description of the basi

High frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV). Case reports.

Treatment of acute respiratory failure is still a hot issue in intensive care everyday practice: in the last few years high frequency ventilation techniques have been employed as a therapy for adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute respiratory failure (ARF). We applied high frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) to 3 patients affected by ARDS or ARF, who did not improve after 24 hours of conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV). All our patient underwent 12 hours of HFPV, and showed an improvement of both respiratory exchange and radiological imaging. Even if the pathogenesis o

The role of opioids in newborn pig fluid percussion brain injury.

The present study was designed to characterize the relationship between cerebral opioid concentration, cerebral hemodynamics, and cerebral oxygenation following percussion brain injury in neonatal pigs. Previous research found that opioids represent a significant vasoactive component in the regulation of the neonatal piglet cerebral circulation. Anesthetized newborn (1-5 days old) pigs equipped with a closed cranial window were connected to a percussion device consisting of a saline-filled cylindrical reservoir with a metal pendulum. Brain injury of moderate severity (1.9-2.3 atm.) was produce
