Long-term care. Unknown quantities.

A small study of nursing home owners, managers, residents and relatives found effective management depended on strong leadership skills, high bed occupancy, enthusiastic staff and low staff turnover. Funding problems were a key issue for homes, creating massive insecurity for residents, relatives and staff. There was a feeling that nursing homes could be used more effectively by the NHS, but there were concerns about capacity and competence. The viability of homes would be improved by annual block booking by the NHS. This would also facilitate the development of intermediate care. A national d

Meta-analytic structural equation modeling for exploring workplace friendship, well-being, and organizational commitment.

BACKGROUND: Workplace friendships, which are informal relationships in the workplace, foster mutual trust, assistance, and emotional support and create a sense of belonging among coworkers. Employees with positive perceptions of their job responsibilities, psychological needs, and work environment experience happiness, satisfaction, and an overall sense of well-being. A heightened sense of well-being in the workplace positively affects employee satisfaction with job tasks and the work environment, reinforcing employees' sense of belonging and organizational commitment. OBJECTIVE: The study pr

Recruitment of rural health care providers: a regional recruiter strategy.

CONTEXT: Access to care in rural areas is a major problem. Despite more than 20% of the US population residing in these areas, only 9% of physicians practice there. Extensive research has documented multiple issues that affect where physicians decide to locate and maintain practices. Creative strategies have been used to influence these recruitment and retention decisions. An emerging strategy, borne out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program (SRAP), effectively uses a targeted regional approach to assist rural communities and health care facilities in assessing

The impact of role stress on workers' behaviour through job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Dysfunctions in role performance have been associated with a large number of consequences, almost always negative, which affect the well-being of workers and the functioning of organizations. An individual's experience of receiving incompatible or conflicting requests (role conflict) and/or the lack of enough information to carry out his/her job (role ambiguity) are causes of role stress. According to previous theory, role ambiguity and conflict decrease workers' performance and are positively related to the probability of workers leaving the organization. Job satisfaction refers to a positive

Downsizing-initiated job transfer of hospital nurses: how do the job transferees fare?

In this longitudinal panel study, the authors compared the reactions to hospital amalgamation of 66 nurses who had been transferred to a different unit for a downsizing-related reason (bumped/displaced, unit closed, redundancy) with the reactions of 181 nurses who remained on their same unit. Prior to any job transfers, the two groups perceived comparable levels of support and held similar attitudes towards their job and the hospital. Two years later, after job transfers had taken place, transferred nurses perceived significantly lower coworker support. They also reported a significantly great

Would you work if you won the lottery? Tracking changes in the American work ethic.

Although many social scientists and political commentators have speculated that the American work ethic is in decline, the last longitudinal study of this issue was conducted by Vecchio (1980) on data collected over 30 years ago. Vecchio examined whether workers would wish to continue working even if it were not financially necessary (i.e., the so-called lottery question from the National Opinion Research Center survey) and concluded that there had been a significant decline in work ethic since the 1950s. In the current study, the authors used an updated data set that included data from 1980 t

The Perceptions and Expectations Toward the Social Responsibility of Hospitals and Organizational Commitment of Nursing Staff.

BACKGROUND: The labor rights of medical workers in hospitals in Taiwan have been a key issue of discussion and controversy in recent years. Generally, poor work conditions and manpower shortages in hospitals have resulted in a vicious circle of severely overworked medical and healthcare staff and chronically low staffing and retention rates. PURPOSE: This study employed corporate social responsibility as the conceptual framework of the social responsibility of hospitals to examine the perceptions and expectations of nurses toward the social responsibility practices of the hospital where they

When does self-sacrificial leadership motivate prosocial behavior? It depends on followers' prevention focus.

In the present set of studies, the authors examine the idea that self-sacrificial leadership motivates follower prosocial behavior, particularly among followers with a prevention focus. Drawing on the self-sacrificial leadership literature and regulatory focus theory, the authors provide results from 4 studies (1 laboratory and 3 field studies) that support the research hypothesis. Specifically, the relationship between self-sacrificial leadership and prosocial behavior (i.e., cooperation, organizational citizenship behavior) is stronger among followers who are high in prevention focus. Predictors of organizational commitment among nurses in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Organizational commitment among nurses is a critical job attitude that affects overall success, effectiveness, and quality of healthcare. There is a dearth of evidence regarding the degree of commitment among nurses and the potential predictors that can influence their organizational commitment in Africa, including Ethiopia. This study assessed the magnitude of organizational commitment and its predictors among nurses working at public hospital medical colleges in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2024. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study and employed multistage sampling to rand

Professional Quality of Life, Team Cohesion, Organizational Commitment, and Intent to Leave Among Nursing Personnel: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIMS: To examine whether professional quality of life, team cohesion, and organizational commitment were independently associated with intent to leave among nursing personnel. BACKGROUND: Prior research links professional quality of life with turnover intention, but less is known about joint associations with team cohesion and multidimensional organizational commitment in nursing workforces. METHODS: A cross-sectional electronic survey of 633 nursing personnel in North Dakota used validated measures. Pearson correlations, multiple regression, and post hoc nested regression were conducted. R

Preliminary cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the organizational commitment questionnaire (OCQ-18) in a Tunisian nursing context.

A few validated instruments exist in Arabic to assess Organizational commitment, which limits research and practical applications in Arabic-speaking contexts. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt and validate the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire developed by Allen, Meyer and Smith (1993) for use in Arabic-speaking nurses. A cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses at Sahloul University Hospital in Sousse, Tunisia using a convenience sampling method. The main inclusion criterion was primarily having more than 6 months of work experience. The Organizational Commitment Q

Regulatory focus and work-related outcomes: a review and meta-analysis.

Regulatory focus theory (Higgins, 1997) has received growing attention in organizational psychology, necessitating a quantitative review that synthesizes its effects on important criteria. In addition, there is need for theoretical integration of regulatory focus theory with personality research. Theoretical integration is particularly relevant, since personality traits and dispositions are distal factors that are unlikely to have direct effects on work behaviors, yet they may have indirect effects via regulatory focus. The current meta-analysis introduces an integrative framework in which the

Association between just world beliefs and perceptions of counterproductive workplace behaviors.

320 adults rated 48 counterproductive workplace behaviors (CWBs) on a 9-point scale, from petty to serious offense, and also completed the Just World Beliefs scale. Ratings of the seriousness of the CWBs indicated considerable variability in perceptions, with theft and physical violence rated most strongly. A factor analysis yielded five interpretable factors. Older participants were more likely to rate as more serious all counterproductive workplace behaviors.

The interdependence of caring, safety, and health in correctional settings: Analysis of a survey of security staff in a large county jail system.

The health of incarcerated populations is intertwined with the health of security staff, but the social mechanisms, and especially the specific interventions, that might mitigate these health harms are underexplored. We examine one possible mechanism of interrelated health harms: whether and how jail security staff are willing and able to care for mentally ill detainees. We hypothesize that the attitudes of security staff towards care affect the well-being of everyone in a jail setting-staff, as well as detainees. Analyzing 539 anonymous respondent surveys administered to a stratified cluster

What makes registered nurses remain in work? An ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Registered nurses' work-related stress, dissatisfaction and burnout are some of the problems in the healthcare and that negatively affect healthcare quality and patient care. A prerequisite for sustained high quality at work is that the registered nurses are motivated. High motivation has been proved to lead to better working results. The theory of inner work life describes the dynamic interplay between a person's perceptions, emotions and motivation and the three key factors for a good working life: nourishment, progress and catalysts. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to expl
