Pentacam Indices in Photorefractive Keratectomy Surgery.

Refractive eye surgeries are one of the most non-emergent ophthalmic surgeries due to the effect on the reduction of refractive errors, increasing visual acuity, enhancing the quality of vision, and indirectly increasing the quality of life of patients. The aim of this study was to determine Pentacam indices in the patients who underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) during 2014-2018, as well as to show their correlation with the type of refractive error. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 2215 eyes of 1125 patients undergoing PRK surgery. The patients' checklist, incl

Improved excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy system.

An improved 193 nm excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy system is described here. The delivery system was optimised to produce a smooth keratectomy bed, to minimise the healing response, and to reduce the regression of the refractive result. A spatial filtering system was used to smooth the energy distribution within each pulse, and the iris was adjusted for every pulse, to eliminate steps and other irregularities from the keratectomy profile. An image rotator was used to average out any remaining non-uniformities in the energy distribution. The results from the first 39 eyes treated with

Paraformaldehyde-induced keratitis after photorefractive keratectomy.

We examined three patients who developed keratitis after myopic photorefractive keratectomy. All patients were treated on the same day and in all three cases paraformaldehyde tablets were used for disinfection of the excimer laser iris cone. All patients developed an intense postoperative corneal inflammation that resulted in corneal opacities. In the first patient, the opacities were central and persisted for at least 4 1/2 months postoperatively. He became more myopic than before the operation. His best spectacle-corrected visual acuity worsened by four Snellen lines. In the other two patien

[Complications in excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy].

The complications of photorefractive keratectomy with excimer laser for myopia depend on preoperative myopia and inter-individual variability in wound healing. Loss of best corrected visual acuity is induced by Haze, irregular astigmatism and decentration. Haze is more frequent after treatment of high myopia. Decentration is a severe complication because its treatment is not well defined and is difficult. Corneal ulcerations infectious and non-infectious have been reported. Other complications are described: induced astigmatism, over and under corrections, central islands, halos, loss of corne

Traumatic corneal abrasions following photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: During excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy, central Bowman's layer and superficial stroma are removed. A potential disadvantage of this technique is whether proper epithelization of the cornea will occur in the event of a corneal abrasion. A potential advantage of photorefractive keratectomy over radial keratotomy in the event of blunt trauma is the presumably sound structural integrity of the cornea following superficial removal of stroma in photorefractive keratectomy compared to the weakened cornea following deep incisions in radial keratotomy. METHODS: We report two pati

[Excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for myopia].

We have used excimer laser during the past year to correct refractive errors (myopia and hypermetropia) and to remove superficial corneal scars. 714 eyes underwent excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for correction of myopia and 81% of the patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better without glasses. 17 patients underwent a second treatment to correct residual myopia and all of them had uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better 6 months later. The results show that excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy is a safe and efficient procedure to correct myopia. The possib

Efficacy of Photorefractive Keratectomy vs. Topography-Guided Photorefractive Keratectomy for Refractive Errors and Aberrations Post-Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Background: Managing post-keratoplasty astigmatism remains challenging. Even though graft viability is the main concern in keratoplasty, astigmatism might hinder vision recovery following a successful corneal transplant. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and topography-guided PRK may be options for correcting refractive errors in patients who underwent keratoplasty. The aim of the study was to compare the results of PRK and topography-guided PRK in patients who had undergone corneal keratoplasty. Methods: This study was conducted at the Chair and Ophthalmology Clinic of the Medical University
