The hexane extract of Phyllanthus maderaspatensis (200 and 100 mg/kg) showed significant hepatoprotection on carbon tetrachloride and thioacetamide induced liver damage in rats. The protective effect was evident from serum biochemical parameters and histopathological analysis. Rats treated with P. maderaspatensis remarkably prevented the elevation of serum AST, ALT and LDH and liver lipid peroxides in CCl(4) and thioacetamide treated rats. Hepatic glutathione levels significantly increased by the treatment with the extracts. Histopathological changes induced by CCl(4) and thioacetamide were al

Liver disease has become a global concern worldwide. In absence of reliable liver protective drugs in modem medicine, a large number of medicinal preparations are recommended for the treatment of liver disorders as they are believed to be harmless based on their natural origin. The aim of the present study was to determine the hepatoprotective activity of Phyllanthus amarus plant extract against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4-induced liver damage in female mice. Carbon tetrachloride administration caused a significant increase in liver and serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (

Human schistosomiasis is an important neglected tropical disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma and is responsible for more than 280,000 deaths annually. Treatment for this disease relies currently on a single drug, praziquantel (PZQ). Concerns regarding PZQ resistance and insensitivity of juvenile schistosomes have increased the interest in resorting to medicinal plants for alternative drug therapies. This study aimed to perform an in vivo schistosomicidal activity evaluation of crude hexanic (HE) and ethanolic (EE) extracts obtained from Phyllanthus amarus in mice infected w

Seven preparations of different species of Chinese herb Phyllarthus with different formulations and additives were studied for their ability to inhibit hepatitis B virus DNA replication, that is the HBsAg and HBeAg expression in a HBV DNA-transfected cell line (2.2.15 cell). The results showed that all the drugs were effectively against HBV replication in vitro. Capsule 1 and tuo cha zhen zhu cao were found to be the most potent anti-HBV extracts of those examined. Both extracts decreased HBaAg expression by nearly 100% at the concentration of 500 mg/L without toxicity on cell growth. Southern

Stress affects the male reproductive system and can cause sub-fertility or infertility. Although Phyllanthus emblica L. (PE) extract has been shown to have high antioxidant capacity and protective properties in damaged tissue, the preventive effects of PE extract on testicular function from stress-related impairment have never been demonstrated. This study aimed to investigate the effects of PE aqueous leaf extract on testicular impairment and protein marker changes in rats suffering from chronic stress. Adult male rats were divided into four groups: a control group, a chronic stress (CS) grou

A comprehensive chemical investigation of the extract from Phyllanthus hainanensis led to the isolation and identification of four new aromatic diterpenoids, phainanones A-D (1-4), along with one known analogue (5). Phainanones A (1) and B (2) are novel ent-cleistanthane-type diterpenoids, with 1 characterized as a 17-nor derivative and 2 as a 3-nor derivative, both sharing a rearranged 5/6/6 tricyclic ring system. Their structures with absolute configurations were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, ECD calculations, and X-ray crystallography. Putative biosynthetic pathways f

The rising incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii infections underscores the urgent need for novel antimicrobial strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effects between a polyphenol-rich extract from Phyllanthus emblica fruit and tetracycline against MDR A. baumannii strains. The extraction process was optimized using the Box-Behnken design approach to maximize the total phenolic content (TPC) of the P. emblica extract. Key variables, including ethanol concentration, extraction time, and solid-to-liquid ratio (w/v), were determined through s

Monkeypox is a communicable disease similar to smallpox, primarily occurring in African countries. However, recently it has spread to countries outside Africa and may arise as the next threat after COVID-pandemic. The causative organism, i.e. Monkeypox Virus (MPV) spreads from one individual to another primarily through inhalation of respiratory droplets or through contact with skin lesions of infected individuals. No known drugs are available specifically for MPV. Due to its similarity with smallpox, treatment of monkeypox is being attempted through the administration of the smallpox vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb. has been traditionally used to treat inflammation and liver diseases and its medicinal property may be due to the presence of relatively high levels of hydrosable tannins. Recent report revealed that pressurized hot water extraction of P. tenellus significantly increased the concentration of hydrolysable tannins and its catabolites. Thus, this study was aimed to evaluate the in vivo toxicity and antioxidant capacity of pressurized hot water extraction of P. tenellus on healthy mice.
METHODS: Pressurized hot water extraction P. tenellus was carried out an

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause for liver disorders and can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis and liver damage which in turn can cause death of patients. HBV DNA Polymerase is essential for HBV replication in the host and hence is used as one of the most potent pharmacological target for the inhibition of HBV. Chronic hepatitis B is currently treated with nucleotide analogues that suppress viral reverse transcriptase activity and most of them are reported to have viral resistance. Therefore, it is of interest to model HBV DNA polymerase to dock known phytochemi

The present study describes the occurrence of two ellagitannins in the ethanolic extract of the leaves and stems of Phyllanthus sellowianus (Euphorbiaceae). Their preliminary antinociceptive properties were also evaluated. The two ellagitannins were identified on the basis of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra data and by mixed co-TLC and co-HPLC injection with an authentic sample of furosin and geraniin. Preliminary pharmacological analysis revealed that both furosin and geraniin (3 to 30 mg/kg, i.p.), given 30 min before testing, exhibited significant and dose-related antinociceptive properties against

For centuries, medicinal plants have played a vital role in healthcare. Phyllanthus amarus is one such plant traditionally used to manage diabetes. This study combined computational modeling and laboratory experiments to evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant properties of its methanol extract (MEPa). MEPa exhibited notable in vitro antidiabetic activity by inhibiting key enzymes involved in glucose metabolism, with IC50 values of 10.2 µg/mL (α-amylase) and 12.5 µg/mL (α-glucosidase), compared to acarbose (6.4 and 8.5 µg/mL). In RIN-5F insulinoma cells, MEPa improved cell viability (87.6% ±

BACKGROUND: In the present study the antioxidant potential of a methanol extract of Phyllanthus emblica leaves (PELE) was determined by in vitro methods as well as by an in vivo animal model, along with HPLC-DAD screening for phyto-constituents.
METHODS: The in vitro antioxidant potential of PELE was assessed by scavenging of DPPH, nitric oxide and anti-lipid peroxidation assays. For in vivo evaluation, a 60-day experimental plan was followed in which Sprague Dawley rats were administered with 1 mL/kg of CCl4 (CCl4 : DMSO + Olive oil; 30 % v/v) alone or with different doses of PELE (200, 400
