Drivers and Outcomes of Engagement in Non-Formal Special Interest Groups Among Japanese Emergency Physicians: An Activity Theory Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency medicine requires physicians to manage high uncertainty, time constraints, and diverse responsibilities. To sustain their careers, continuous professional development (CPD) and psychological well-being are crucial. While participation in formal learning is often limited by time and location, autonomous "non-formal" Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are emerging as flexible learning spaces. This study aimed to address two research questions (RQs): (1) What drives Japanese emergency physicians (EPs) to engage in non-formal SIGs? (2) What do EPs learn and gain through these act

Factors Associated With Engagement When Using Social Media to Teach Physicians Point-of-Care Ultrasound During Off-Hours: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Although social media is often viewed by residents and could be used to reinforce teaching points, there is little data on methods that improve engagement in learning medical topics while socially perusing this medium. OBJECTIVE: We observed how the timing of posted questions, correctly answering questions, and providing supportive comments affected resident engagement with point-of-care ultrasound clips viewed electively on a private social media account. METHODS: Of 60 medical residents, 35 followed an Instagram account that posted ultrasound video clips with questions during t

Engaging HIV-HCV co-infected patients in HCV treatment: the roles played by the prescribing physician and patients' beliefs (ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH cohort, France).

BACKGROUND: Treatment for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) may be delayed significantly in HIV/HCV co-infected patients. Our study aims at identifying the correlates of access to HCV treatment in this population. METHODS: We used 3-year follow-up data from the HEPAVIH ANRS-CO13 nationwide French cohort which enrolled patients living with HIV and HCV. We included pegylated interferon and ribavirin-naive patients (N = 600) at enrolment. Clinical/biological data were retrieved from medical records. Self-administered questionnaires were used for both physicians and their patients to collect data about

Lower trust in artificial intelligence than physicians coexists with high willingness to engage in artificial intelligence-assisted prostate cancer management among active surveillance patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the sentiment for artificial intelligence (AI) among prostate cancer (PCa) patients on active surveillance (AS) and to evaluate how that sentiment relates to patient willingness to engage with AI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a 23-question online survey (November-December 2025) distributed through an AS platform. Analyses were restricted to 110 respondents with PCa on AS. Outcomes included trust ratings (10-point Likert scale) for physicians versus AI, responses to hypothetical AI management recommendations and perceived concerns and facilitators

Impact of Secure Electronic Health Record Chat on Physician Communication in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication in the emergency department (ED) is essential for safe patient care. Electronic health record (EHR)-integrated secure messaging may improve communication workflows, but limited evidence exists comparing clinician satisfaction across modalities in the ED. This study evaluated physician satisfaction with an EHR-integrated secure messaging tool compared to existing communication methods for non-emergent communication. METHODS: We conducted an electronic pre-post survey study at an urban academic ED following implementation of an EHR-integrated secure messagi

Digital First Primary Care for those with multiple long-term conditions: a rapid review of the views of stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: General practices are facing challenges such as rising patient demand and difficulties recruiting and retaining general practitioners. Greater use of digital technology has been advocated as a way of mitigating some of these challenges and improving patient access. This includes Digital First Primary Care, when a patient's first contact with primary care is through a digital route, either through a laptop or smartphone. The use of Digital First Primary Care has been expedited since COVID-19. There is little evidence of staff experiences of using Digital First Primary Care with more

Psychological Factors That Contribute to the Use of Video Consultations in Health Care: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous benefits to delivering care via video consultations (VCs). Yet, the willingness of health care professionals (HCPs) to use video as a modality of care is one of the greatest barriers to its adoption. Decisions regarding whether to use video may be based on assumptions and concerns that are not necessarily borne of evidence. To effectively address psychological barriers to VC, it is essential to gain a better understanding of specific factors (eg, attitudes, beliefs, and emotions) that influence HCPs' VC use. OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to conduct a systemati

Engagement in and correlates of total cutaneous exams and skin self-exams among young melanoma survivors and their family.

Young adult melanoma survivors and their close family (first degree relatives/FDRs) are at increased risk for developing a melanoma, but little is known about engagement in and correlates of their clinical skin exam (CSE) and skin self-examination (SSE) behaviors. Five hundred and seventy-four YA survivors and their FDRs completed an online survey assessing engagement in CSE and SSE, as well as measures of background factors, cognitive and psychosocial factors, CSE and SSE planning, and family influences. Approximately 90% of YAs had a CSE and 90% performed SSE in the last year, but engagement

The illusory correlation between geometrical similarity and physician satisfaction in heart auto-segmentation revealed by a physician-blind test.

BACKGROUND: Auto-segmentation tools are essential in adaptive radiation therapy (ART). While evaluation typically relies on geometric metrics like Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), high scores do not always translate to clinical acceptability. PURPOSE: This study investigated the "illusory correlation" between geometric indices and physician satisfaction and aimed to identify critical anatomical substructures that dictate clinical judgment. METHODS: Heart auto-segmentation was performed for 30 left-sided breast cancer patients using pre-built and on-site trained fully convolutional dense ne

Patient Digital Engagement With After Visit Summary in Ambulatory Care.

IMPORTANCE: The after visit summary (AVS) is believed to be a critical mechanism for postvisit communication, and health systems are widely adopting digital AVS systems to comply with federal regulations. However, little is known regarding the physician time cost of writing the AVS and whether patients routinely engage with the digital AVS. OBJECTIVE: To assess patterns of patient digital AVS engagement following ambulatory care visits and the associated physician time cost. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed ambulatory care visits that occurred between Ju

Implementation of Electronic Clinical Decision Support for Radiology Referrals: The Role of Governance, Clinician Engagement and Education.

OBJECTIVES: Medical imaging utilisation continues to increase globally, raising concerns regarding sustainability, workforce capacity, patient safety and environmental impact. Electronic Clinical Decision Support (eCDS) systems have been proposed as a strategy to improve imaging appropriateness; however, international experience suggests that technology alone is insufficient for successful adoption. This study describes an organisational implementation strategy for an eCDS programme for imaging referrals and examines early changes in imaging utilisation associated with clinician engagement and

Utilizing internal analytics and physician-director collaborations to enhance neurological health communication on YouTube.

The dissemination of health information on YouTube presents a paradox where expert-generated content, despite high clinical accuracy, often lacks the engagement seen in non-expert patient narratives. Recent evaluations of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) videos confirm that while physician-produced content achieves superior objective quality scores, it frequently suffers from low visibility and fails to correlate popularity with scientific validity. This manuscript proposes a shift toward utilizing internal analytics, specifically Average View Duration (AVD) and Click-Through Rate (CTR), alongsid

Differences among specialists in using the Electronic Medical Record alert system for HCV screening in outpatients at a large general hospital.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Some hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients remain underdiagnosed at a large hospital. The electronic medical record (EMR) alert system can increase in-hospital screening. This study evaluates the effectiveness of screening among outpatients and assesses variations in physician engagement across different specialties. METHODS: From December 2022 to April 2023, outpatients aged 45-79 years, with diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease, who did not have anti-HCV data in their EMR were identified. A pop-up alert prompted physicians to either order anti-HCV testing or refer…
