Immunomodulatory effects of medicinal and edible plants in autoimmune diseases: mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) and related immune-mediated inflammatory disorders are characterized by loss of immune tolerance, persistent inflammatory activation, immune-cell imbalance, oxidative stress, and tissue-specific injury. Although conventional immunomodulatory therapies remain central to disease management, their long-term use may be limited by adverse effects, variable treatment responses, and high costs. Medicinal and edible plants (MEPs) provide a diverse source of bioactive compounds with potential immunoregulatory activity. This narrative review summarizes the immunological basis o

Edible caterpillars and their host plants: ethnobotanical insights in Kwilu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: In Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, almost 99% of the population eats a variety of edible caterpillars. Many plant species used by humans are also eaten by these caterpillars. Intensive human use of these plants could lead to their gradual extinction. This would directly affect the caterpillars that feed on them and reduce their protein supply to local populations. Assessing these pressures requires a basic understanding of the species involved. METHODS: Semi-structured surveys were conducted with 180 randomly selected informants in the two most populated areas of Kwi

Expression of protective antigen in transgenic plants: a step towards edible vaccine against anthrax.

Protective antigen (PA) is the most potent molecule for vaccination against anthrax. In the present study, we have successfully integrated protective antigen gene in nuclear genome of tobacco plants by Agrobacterium mediated leaf-disc transformation method. Expression of protective antigen gene was detected by immunoblot analysis using antisera raised against purified PA. A distinct band of approximately 83kDa lighted up in the protein extracted from transformed plants while there was no such band in untransformed plants. The plant expressed PA showed biological activity just like native PA, w

Plant-based edible vaccines: Can cholera be the case study in Africa?

Vaccines are employed as a sanitary approach that is implemented to lessen the hurdles caused by infectious diseases on the safety of public health. A vaccine is biologically made from inactive components of microbes, to enhance immunity and as a defense mechanism adverse to parasitic, bacterial and viral illnesses. Nonetheless, the mode of production that involves purification is quite costly, more so, to low and middle-income countries, especially in Africa. Conventional oral cholera vaccines, though commercially available, face logistical challenges to be transported and distributed to targ

Influence of environmental conditions on the production of nutraceuticals in Italian edible plant landraces.

Autochthonous plant varieties, also referred to as landraces, represent an important genetic resource, being well-adapted to the environment in which they have been selected. Landraces usually show profiles rich in nutraceuticals, making them an effective and valuable alternative to commercial agri-products, as well as potential candidates for crop improvement programs. Basilicata region is recognized as an Italian hotspot for agrobiodiversity, due to its complex orography. Thus, this work aimed to characterize and monitor, for two successive years, the content of secondary metabolites and rel

Application of LC and LC-MS to the analysis of melatonin and serotonin in edible plants.

Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland of animals. Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter and one of the precursors of melatonin biosynthesis. These two indoleamines have recently been reported to have widespread occurrence in many edible plants. Consuming foodstuffs containing melatonin and serotonin could raise their physiologic concentrations in blood and enhance human health. Literature concerning analytical methods suitable for determination of melatonin and serotonin in edible plants is limited, although several liquid chromatographic (LC) techniques have been used f

Edible and herbal plants against Helicobacter pylori infection: From epidemiological, experimental studies to clinical perspectives.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is an important global public health concern, causing conditions like gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcers, gastric lymphoma, distal gastric cancer and other gastric diseases. With the increasing prevalence of antibiotics resistance, the cure rate of antibiotics-based triple or quadruple therapy has declined to 80 % or less. Moreover, side effects still remain. Hence, alternative, more potent and safer anti-H. pylori medications are required. Numerous studies have indicated that natural products from medical plants are valuable repositories for the prevent

Recent Progress and Challenges in the Development of Edible Vaccines Produced by Genetically Modified Plants.

Biotechnologists have pioneered the idea of an edible vaccination in recent years. Subunit vaccines, such as those used to create edible vaccines, involve the introduction of certain genes into transgenic plants, which are subsequently coaxed into producing the corresponding protein. Bananas, potatoes, legumes, lettuce, soybeans, corn, and rice are all examples of foods that fall under this category. They have a low unit cost, can be stored conveniently, and are simple to administer to patients of varying ages. There is great hope that the use of edible vaccinations, particularly in underdevel

Colorimetric selective quantification of anthocyanins with catechol/pyrogallol moiety in edible plants upon zinc complexation.

Here is examined the colour development from common anthocyanins (i.e., cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, and pelargonidin glycosides) and from anthocyanins-rich extracts (i.e., bilberries, strawberries, and raspberries), using zinc-anthocyanin complexes as molecular probe. We have observed the absorbance increase in the blue region in presence of large excess of zinc ion at acidic pH for cyanidin and delphinidin derivatives, likely due to quinoidal base stabilization from catechol and pyrogallol moiety. The assay condition were studied and applied to natural extracts containing these compounds

Solution conformations of Zika NS2B-NS3pro and its inhibition by natural products from edible plants.

The recent Zika viral (ZIKV) epidemic has been associated with severe neurological pathologies such as neonatal microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome but unfortunately no vaccine or medication is effectively available yet. Zika NS2B-NS3pro is essential for the proteolysis of the viral polyprotein and thereby viral replication. Thus NS2B-NS3pro represents an attractive target for anti-Zika drug discovery/design. Here, we have characterized the solution conformations and catalytic parameters of both linked and unlinked Zika NS2B-NS3pro complexes and found that the unlinked complex manifested
