Active microrheology determines scale-dependent material properties of Chaetopterus mucus.

We characterize the lengthscale-dependent rheological properties of mucus from the ubiquitous Chaetopterus marine worm. We use optically trapped probes (2-10 μm) to induce microscopic strains and measure the stress response as a function of oscillation amplitude. Our results show that viscoelastic properties are highly dependent on strain scale (l), indicating three distinct lengthscale-dependent regimes at l1 ≤4 μm, l2≈4-10 μm, and l3≥10 μm. While mucus response is similar to water for l1, suggesting that probes rarely contact the mucus mesh, the response for l2 is distinctly more viscous and

Revision of Chaetacanthus Seidler, 1922 (Annelida, Phyllodocida, Polynoidae).

The polynoid genus Chaetacanthus Seidler, 1922 currently includes three nominal species provided with parapodial branchiae. Members of this taxon have palps with longitudinal rows of papillae, notochaetae abundant and neurochaetae spinulose. Most Chaetacanthus species were originally described as belonging to Lepidonotus Leach, 1816, and some of them were later regarded as subjective synonyms of Iphione magnifica Grube, 1876, the type species for Chaetacanthus. This species was described from the Caribbean Sea and later recorded for the tropical Eastern Pacific. After the supposed Amphi-Americ

Benthic bioturbation: A canary in the mine for the retention and release of metals from estuarine sediments.

After the largest mining tailings spill in Brazil, the Rio Doce estuarine ecosystem was severely impacted by metal contamination. In a 28-day laboratory experiment, we examined the effects of the polychaeta Laeonereis sp. on fluxes of oxygen and metal across the sediment-water interface. The density-dependent effect of Laeonereis sp. in the oxygen and metal fluxes was tested at low and high (74 and 222 ind m-2, respectively) densities, and compared with defaunated controls. The higher worm density had an amplified effect on the oxygen flux, sediment uptake of Al and Mn, and Fe oxidation compar

Active Polymers Translocate Faster in Confinement.

Living organisms employ diverse strategies to navigate confined environments. Inspired by translocation observations on California blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus), we combine biological experiments and active-polymer simulations to examine how confinement and stiffness govern translocation. Active filaments translocate fastest when the channel width is comparable to their diameter, with escape time determined by propulsion speed, filament length, and channel geometry. In wider channels, activity and flexibility induce reorientation-dominated conformational changes that prolong escape. A si

Regeneration of posterior segments and terminal structures in the bearded fireworm, Hermodice carunculata (Annelida: Amphinomidae).

Like many other annelids, bearded fireworms, Hermodice carunculata, are capable of regenerating posterior body segments and terminal structures lost to amputation. Although previous research has examined anterior regeneration in other fireworm species, posterior regenerative ability in fireworms remains poorly studied. As the morphology of the anal lobe (a small, fleshy terminal structure of unknown function) has been used to distinguish East and West Atlantic H. carunculata populations, there is a more imminent need to understand the morphology and organization of tissues in specimens undergo

Aggregative versus solitary settlement in Spirobranchus cariniferus gray, 1843 (serpulinae). What is the trade-off?

Sessile marine invertebrates usually follow a distinct pattern of living in dense aggregations or as solitary individuals. However, at least some serpulins, including Spirobranchus cariniferus, seem to be able to settle aggregative or solitary. To understand how living solitary or in aggregation is beneficial, it is essential to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both settlement strategies for sessile invertebrates. Benefits of living in aggregations include securing suitable habitat, improving the probability of survival by mitigating physical stress and increasing reproductive su

Distribution of Siboglinids (Annelida, Siboglinidae) in the Laptev Sea and Adjacent Areas of the Arctic Basin.

Biodiversity in the Laptev Sea was assessed for gutless marine worms of the family Siboglinidae (Annelida), whose metabolism is provided by symbiotic bacteria that oxidize hydrogen sulfide and methane. Seven siboglinid species were found within the geographical boundaries of the Laptev Sea, and another species was found in an adjacent sector of the Arctic Basin. The largest number of finds and the greatest biological diversity of siboglinids were observed in the eastern part of the Laptev Sea in a field of numerous methane flares. One find was made in the estuary area of the Lena River at a de

Getting to the root of fireworms' stinging chaetae-chaetal arrangement and ultrastructure of Eurythoe complanata (Pallas, 1766) (Amphinomida).

Amphinomid species are since long known to cause urtication upon contact with the human skin. Since it has been reported that amphinomid chaetae are hollow, it has repeatedly been suggested that poison is injected upon epidermal contact. To test predictions for the structural correlate of such a stinging device we studied the structure and formation of chaetae in the fireworm Eurythoe complanata (Amphinomida). Neither the structure of the chaetae nor their formation and their position within the parapodium provide evidence for their function as hollow needles to inject poison. The chaetae even

The effect of emamectin benzoate on mortality, growth and metabolism of the polychaete Capitella sp.

Emamectin benzoate (EMB) is used as an in-feed antiparasitic agent to mitigate sea lice infestations in salmonid aquaculture, potentially entering the marine environment through uneaten feed pellets and feces. The polychaete Capitella sp. is a prevalent species in the benthic environments beneath salmon farms, being both an efficient fish-feces converter due to their deposit-feeding behavior and as susceptible non-target species to EMB exposure. However, the impact of EMB on this non-target species remains unclear. To assess the potential effects of EMB on Capitella sp., bioassays were conduct

Dynamic microvilli sculpt bristles at nanometric scale.

Organisms generate shapes across size scales. Whereas patterning and morphogenesis of macroscopic tissues has been extensively studied, the principles underlying the formation of micrometric and submicrometric structures remain largely enigmatic. Individual cells of polychaete annelids, so-called chaetoblasts, are associated with the generation of chitinous bristles of highly stereotypic geometry. Here we show that bristle formation requires a chitin-producing enzyme specifically expressed in the chaetoblasts. Chaetoblasts exhibit dynamic cell surfaces with stereotypical patterns of actin-rich

The Finding of Pogonophorans (Annelida, Siboglinidae) in the St. Anna Trough (Kara Sea) in an Area of Gas Hydrate Dissociation.

Representatives of pogonophorans (Annelida, Siboglinidae), whose vital activity is provided by symbiotic chemoautotrophic bacteria that oxidize methane and hydrogen sulfide, were found in the St. Anna Trough at depths of 539 and 437 m. The finding of pogonophorans suggests high concentrations of methane, which might result from dissociation of bottom gas hydrates under the influence of the influx of warm Atlantic water into the Kara Sea along the St. Anna Trough.

Chaetal arrangement and type diversity in two Magelona species (Magelonidae, Annelida) with ultrastructural details of the internal support chaetae.

The systematics of Annelida has repeatedly been changed based on morphological data, but more recently established transcriptomic approaches yielded a stable and widely accepted phylogenetic tree, placing Magelonidae and Oweniidae as sister group to all remaining annelids. This led to an increased interest in these groups in terms of morphological traits and their phylogenetic significance. As one of the most characteristic morphological characters of annelids, the chaetae of Magelonidae are well investigated regarding their shape, but phylogenetically relevant aspects like their general arran

A phased chromosome-level genome of the annelid tubeworm Galeolaria caespitosa.

Haplotype-resolved (phased) genome assemblies are emerging as important assets for genomic studies of species with high heterozygosity, but remain lacking for key animal lineages. Here, we use PacBio HiFi and Omni-C technologies to assemble the first phased, annotated, chromosome-level genome for any annelid: the reef-building tubeworm Galeolaria caespitosa (Serpulidae). The assembly is 803.5 Mbp long (scaffold N50 = 76.5 Mbp) for haplotype 1 and 789.3 Mbp long (scaffold N50 = 75.4 Mbp) for haplotype 2, which are arranged into 11 pairs of chromosomes showing no sign of sex chromosomes. Jaw morphology and function in Drilonereis cf. filum (Oenonidae, Annelida).

Representatives of the extant family Oenonidae (Annelida, Eunicida) have a prionognath jaw apparatus, with maxillae having forceps-like elements, a number of asymmetrical dentate plates and long slender carriers, which is characteristic of some fossil forms known from the Paleozoic epoch. Therefore, data on the fine structure and functional morphology of Oenonidae jaws are helpful for the interpretation of fossil materials. The fine structure of the jaw apparatus and the ventral pharyngeal organ is studied in one species of the Oenonidae (Annelida)-Drilonereis cf. filum. The material was colle

Dispersal and invasive stages of Urospora eugregarines (Apicomplexa) from brown bodies of a polychaete host.

Urosporid eugregarines (Apicomplexa: Urosporidae) are unicellular eukaryotic parasites inhabiting the coelom or the intestine of marine invertebrates such as annelids, molluscs, nemerteans, and echinoderms. Despite the availability of published morphological and phylogenetical analyses of coelomic gregarines, their long-term survival in the host body cavity and dispersal routes into the marine environment remain unclear. Here, we focus on Urospora gametocysts and oocysts with sporozoites, which were found viable inside the so-called brown bodies floating in the body cavity of the polychaete Tr

Patterns of Autonomous and Conditional Neural Specification for the Brain and Ventral Nerve Cord in Annelida.

Evolution of central nervous systems is a long-debated topic. Similar mechanisms of conditional neural specification linked to dorsal-ventral (D-V) axis formation have been used to support homology across several taxa. We tested for autonomous versus conditional neural specification in two distantly related annelids, Capitella teleta and Platynereis dumerilii, using blastomere isolations and ablations. Our results demonstrate autonomous specification of anterior neural tissue in isolated first-quartet (1q) micromeres for both annelids. In both annelids, partial larvae derived from isolation of

Secretory Cells in Halla parthenopeia (Oenonidae): Potential Implications for the Feeding and Defence Strategies of a Carnivorous Burrowing Polychaete.

Carnivorous polychaetes are known to bear diversified and often unique anatomical and behavioural adaptations for predation and defence. Halla parthenopeia, a species known to be a specialized predator of clams, thrives in the soft bottoms of the Mediterranean Sea, holding potential for polyculture and biotechnology due to the secretion of bioactive compounds. Our objective was to provide a comprehensive description of H. parthenopeia's anatomy and microanatomy, shedding light on the relation between morphology and habitat, chemical defences, and feeding behaviour. Remarkably loud snaps during mouth-fighting by a sponge-dwelling worm.

Many aquatic animals, including mammals, fishes, crustaceans and insects, produce loud sounds underwater [1-6]. Soft-bodied worms would seem unlikely to produce a loud snap or pop because such brief, intense sounds normally require extreme movements and sophisticated energy storage and release mechanisms [5]. Surprisingly, we discovered a segmented marine worm that makes loud popping sounds during a highly stereotyped intraspecific agonistic behavior we call 'mouth fighting'. These sounds - sound pressures up to 157 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, with frequencies in the 1-100 kHz range and a strong signa

Flourishing chemosynthetic life at the greatest depths of hadal trenches.

Hadal trenches, some of the Earth's least explored and understood environments, have long been proposed to harbour chemosynthesis-based communities1,2. Despite increasing attention, actual documentation of such communities has been exceptionally rare3,4. Here we report the discovery of the deepest and the most extensive chemosynthesis-based communities known to exist on Earth during an expedition to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and the western Aleutian Trench using the manned submersible Fendouzhe. The communities dominated by siboglinid Polychaeta and Bivalvia span a distance of 2,500 km at dep

Relationships between plastic litter and chemical pollutants on benthic biodiversity.

Five Descriptors (D) of Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD): marine litter (D10), non-indigenous species (D2) and organic and inorganic pollutants (D8), were estimated in a coastal area of GSA 16 (Augusta harbour, Central Mediterranean Sea) in order to study their effects on the biodiversity (D1) of the benthic community D6) and to improve data for the MSFD. Investigation of plastic debris had led to the identification of 38 fragments divided into four categories, among which microplastics resulted as the most abundant.
