A few-shot approach for COVID-19 screening in standard and portable chest X-ray images.

Reliable and effective diagnostic systems are of vital importance for COVID-19, specifically for triage and screening procedures. In this work, a fully automatic diagnostic system based on chest X-ray images (CXR) has been proposed. It relies on the few-shot paradigm, which allows to work with small databases. Furthermore, three components have been added to improve the diagnosis performance: (1) a region proposal network which makes the system focus on the lungs; (2) a novel cost function which adds expert knowledge by giving specific penalties to each misdiagnosis; and (3) an ensembling proc

[Assessment of osteoporosis in the local population by means of a portable dual energy X-ray absorptiometry unit].

We assessed bone mineral density (BMD) in the local population by means of a portable dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) unit. BMD was measured by DXA in 197 women (62 premenopausal and 135 postmenopausal) in Shiunji town. Age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), menstrual history, obstetric history, habits, symptoms and hormonal cytology (eosinophilic index (EI), karyopyknotic index (KPI) and maturation value (MV)) were investigated. A negative correlation (r = -0.645, p < 0.01) was found between BMD and age. Low BMD (BMD < 0.8g/cm2) was found at a rate of 3.2% in premenopausal women a

Deep Convolutional Approaches for the Analysis of COVID-19 Using Chest X-Ray Images From Portable Devices.

The recent human coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Given the effects of COVID-19 in pulmonary tissues, chest radiography imaging plays an important role in the screening, early detection, and monitoring of the suspected individuals. Hence, as the pandemic of COVID-19 progresses, there will be a greater reliance on the use of portable equipment for the acquisition of chest X-ray images due to its accessibility, widespread availability, and benefits regarding to infection control issues, minimizing th

Impact of the use of the ultra-portable digital x-ray with CAD4TB for active case finding for tuberculosis in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The ultra-portable digital x-ray (UPDX) with computer-aided detection (CAD) is a new technology aimed at bringing tuberculosis (TB) screening innovations to hard-to-reach communities and strengthening the active case-finding (ACF) interventions for TB. As TB control measures remain critical globally and in Nigeria, the country acquired and rolled out 10 UPDX with computer-aided detection (CAD4TB) software in eight states. This study seeks to evaluate the efficiency and impact of the UPDX with CAD4TB for TB case finding in Nigeria. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study inv

Call to Action: Creating Resources for Radiology Technologists to Capture Higher Quality Portable Chest X-rays.

Background Patient rotation, foreign body overlying anatomy, and anatomy out of field of view can have detrimental impacts on the diagnostic quality of portable chest x-rays (PCXRs), especially as the number of PCXR imaging increases due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although preventable, these "quality failures" are common and may lead to interpretative and diagnostic errors for the radiologist. Aims In this study, we present a baseline quality failure rate of PCXR imaging as observed at our institution. We also conduct a focus group highlighting the key issues that lea

Assessment of occupational exposure to manganese and other metals in welding fumes by portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.

Elemental analysis of welding fume samples can be done using several laboratory-based techniques. However, portable measurement techniques could offer several advantages. In this study, we sought to determine whether the portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) is suitable for analysis of five metals (manganese, iron, zinc, copper, and chromium) on 37-mm polytetrafluoroethylene filters. Using this filter fitted on a cyclone in line with a personal pump, gravimetric samples were collected from a group of boilermakers exposed to welding fumes. We assessed the assumption of uniform depositi

Assessment of scattered and leakage radiation from ultra-portable X-ray systems in chest imaging: An independent study.

Ultraportable (UP) X-ray devices are ideal to use in community-based settings, particularly for chest X-ray (CXR) screening of tuberculosis (TB). Unfortunately, there is insufficient guidance on the radiation safety of these devices. This study aims to determine the radiation dose by UP X-ray devices to both the public and radiographers compared to international dose limits. Radiation dose measurements were performed with four UP X-ray devices that met international criteria, utilizing a clinically representative CXR set-up made with a thorax phantom. Scatter and leakage radiation dose were me

A methodology for the identification and classification of weighted silk in museum collections using portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (PXRF).

In the 19th century in Europe and North America, silk was often treated with inorganic salts to increase its weight. Although such silk fabrics, often referred to as "weighted" or "loaded", are considered to degrade rapidly, their presence in heritage collections often remains unclear. So far, the fragility and multilayered structure of garments have prevented swift identification and classification of weighted silks, as often objects cannot be placed in the vertical position for analysis, nor can superimposed layers of fabric be measured selectively. In this article, a non-invasive approach f

Multi-task localization of the hemidiaphragms and lung segmentation in portable chest X-ray images of COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 can cause long-term symptoms in the patients after they overcome the disease. Given that this disease mainly damages the respiratory system, these symptoms are often related with breathing problems that can be caused by an affected diaphragm. The diaphragmatic function can be assessed with imaging modalities like computerized tomography or chest X-ray. However, this process must be performed by expert clinicians with manual visual inspection. Moreover, during the pandemic, the clinicians were asked to prioritize the use of portable devices, preventing the risk of cross

A study by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) of the painting "Still Life with Vase, Plate and Flowers" (1886-1888).

Portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (pXRF) was employed in the characterization of the pigments present in the painting "Still Life with Vase, Plate and Flowers", of unknown authorship, but previously attributed to Vincent van Gogh, belonging to the collection of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). In situ pXRF measurements were carried out by means of a portable system in order to provide the museum with a scientific documentation about the materials in the painting. Spectra were taken at different color regions and different hues in the pictorial layer. Some of the mat

Use of a field portable X-Ray fluorescence analyzer to determine the concentration of lead and other metals in soil samples.

Field portable methods are often needed in risk characterization, assessment and management to rapidly determine metal concentrations in environmental samples. Examples are for determining: "hot spots" of soil contamination, whether dust wipe lead levels meet housing occupancy standards, and worker respiratory protection levels. For over 30 years portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzers have been available for the in situ, non-destructive, measurement of lead in paint. Recent advances made possible their use for analysis of airborne dust filter samples, soil, and dust wipes. Research at the

Case Report: Portable X-Ray Guided Blood Patch in Treating Post Dural Puncture Headache Status Post Intrathecal Pump Placement.

Post dural puncture headache (PDPH) is common after placement of an intrathecal pump (ITP). Treatment of refractory PDPH requires an epidural blood patch (EBP) with fluoroscopic guidance to avoid damaging the intrathecal catheter. However, when patients' symptoms are severe and advanced imaging resources are unavailable, a safe and effective alternative would need to be explored. Here, we describe a successful application of portable X-ray in guiding EBP in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) to treat a patient with refractory and debilitating PDPH status post ITP placement. This approach aff

The impact of protective eyewear and device position on operator radiation dose during handheld portable X‑ray device use.

OBJECTIVES: The use of handheld dental X-ray devices has been increasing, raising concerns about operator radiation exposure. This study evaluated the effects of handheld dental X-ray device positioning and protective eyewear on the absorbed dose received by the operator's eye lens and pituitary gland. METHODS: Calibrated optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters were placed at the eye lens and sphenoid regions of an anthropomorphic head phantom. Measurements were obtained under different device positioning scenarios, with and without protective eyewear. Four operator positions were evaluat

[Development of computer code PIETAII, for analysis of exposure dose from portable X-ray in neonatal intensive care unit].

The patients in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) are more likely to get portable X-ray often while they are in the hospital. These patients potentially may get relatively more exposure dose in total in a short period of time. We developed a software to analyze the exposure dose for the patients in the incubator, which is called PIETAII (Patient Information of Exposure dose Total Analysis in NICU). Then, we compared the accuracy of PIETAII and SDEC (surface dose evaluation code) based on customary method. Using the 5 cm body thickness with exposure setting of 50 kV, 1 mAs, relative error bet

Portable ultrasound shows closer agreement than bioimpedance with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for body composition monitoring after sleeve gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Accurate body composition assessment is increasingly recognized as an important component of clinical nutrition assessment in obesity care; however, access to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) remains limited. Portable alternatives such as bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and ultrasound may improve accessibility, but evidence supporting their ability to monitor body composition change following metabolic bariatric surgery is limited. This study compared portable ultrasound and BIS with DXA for assessing body composition before and after sleeve gastrectomy. METHODS: In

Feasibility of using a novel optically filtered monochromatic portable X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) to quantify lead in wild bird bones.

Lead (Pb) threatens wildlife and humans through neurological, cardiovascular, and renal damage. Conventional tissue Pb assessment relies on costly wet-lab methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Monochromatic X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) enables rapid, non-destructive, field-deployable Pb detection with lower detection limits than prior portable XRF systems. We evaluated the feasibility, calibration, attenuation correction, and ICP-MS agreement of a doubly curved crystal (DCC)-enhanced MXRF (X-ray Optical Systems, East Greenbush, NY) for bone Pb quantification in Am

Body composition in older community-dwelling adults with hip fracture: portable field methods validated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Ageing is associated with weight loss and subsequently poor health outcomes. The present study assessed agreement between two field methods, bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) and corrected arm muscle area (CAMA) for assessment of body composition against dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the reference technique. Agreement between two predictive equations estimating skeletal muscle mass (SMM) from BIS against SMM from DXA was also determined. Assessments occurred at baseline < 14 d post-surgery (n 79), and at 6 months (6M; n 75) and 12 months (12M; n 63) in community-living older

Laboratory evaluation of a field-portable sealed source X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for determination of metals in air filter samples.

Recent advances in field-portable X-ray fluorescence (FP XRF) spectrometer technology have made it a potentially valuable screening tool for the industrial hygienist to estimate worker exposures to airborne metals. Although recent studies have shown that FP XRF technology may be better suited for qualitative or semiquantitative analysis of airborne lead in the workplace, these studies have not extensively addressed its ability to measure other elements. This study involved a laboratory-based evaluation of a representative model FP XRF spectrometer to measure elements commonly encountered in wo

Performance evaluation of currently used portable X ray fluorescence instruments for measuring the lead content of paint in field samples.

Field-portable X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) instruments are important for non-destructive, rapid and convenient measurements of lead in paint, in view of potential remediation. Using real-life paint samples, we compared measurements from three FP-XRF instruments currently used in Switzerland with laboratory measurements using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after complete sample dissolution. Two FP-XRF devices that functioned by lead L shell excitation frequently underestimated the lead concentration of samples. Lack of accuracy correlated with lead depth and/or the presence of add

Assessing the potential of portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) as a rapid, onsite screening tool in the assessment of cadmium surface decontamination effectiveness.

Portable X-ray fluorescence has successfully been used to effectively evaluate occupational exposure to airborne and surface metal contaminants nondestructively. Traditional methods of assessing metal surface contamination involve the costly, time-consuming collection and laboratory analysis of wipe samples, making portable X-ray fluorescence an attractive alternative method for screening worksites by reducing delays in risk assessment decision-making. Existing research into this use of portable X-ray fluorescence has primarily been centered on the analysis of airborne and surface lead contami
