Mapping the Relationship Between Post-Traumatic Stress and Post-Traumatic Growth and the Mediating Role of Resilience.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) are recognized psychological outcomes of trauma, yet their relationship and role of resilience remain incompletely understood. Resilience, shaped by social and cultural factors, may reduce distress and facilitate growth, making it critical for public mental health strategies. The objective is to systematically map and synthesize evidence on the mediating and moderating role of resilience in the relationship between PTSD and PTG, with attention to social, cultural and contextual determinants relevant to population mental heal

Childhood maltreatment, psychological resilience, and posttraumatic reactions in youth: The roles of positive childhood experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is an early risk factor for posttraumatic reactions in youth. Psychological resilience plays a significant role in these processes. However, the role of positive childhood experiences (PCEs) is less known. We aimed to explore how CM and PCEs jointly affect posttraumatic reactions via psychological resilience in young CM survivors. METHOD: The participants were 2,669 Chinese youth with CM experiences (53.6% female, 51.2% ≤ 18 years) who completed three-wave assessments over 1 year. We used structural equation modeling to examine the mediating roles of psy

Rumination and posttraumatic growth in people with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the connection between rumination and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in cancer patients, while also investigating the underlying factors that may explain the mixed findings observed in prior research on this relationship. METHODS: The PRISMA method for evidence synthesis was adopted in the study. Studies published from inception through August 2024 that reported a correlation between PTG and rumination (intrusive rumination and deliberate rumination) among people with cancer were identified through systematic searches in nine databases, including PubMed, PsycIN

Dynamic structure of posttraumatic growth among victims of the 2021 Henan floods: A 6-month, three-wave longitudinal study.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) following traumatic events is a dynamic and transformational process. However, its dynamic structure is currently unknown. The study aimed to estimate the dynamic structure of PTG at the nuance level based on PTG measurement items using network analysis. A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted from July 20, 2021, to January 30, 2022, among the victims experiencing the 2021 Henan floods. The final sample (n = 297) completed reports of PTG after 0, 3, and 6 months of the disaster. We employed the graphical vector autoregressive model approach to estimate extended

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for post-traumatic growth (PTG) in people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In evaluating the effectiveness of different therapeutic methods aimed at fostering post-traumatic growth (PTG) in individuals who have experienced trauma, a key inquiry arises: Can cognitive-behavioral therapies enhance PTG in those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder? METHODS: To address this question, comprehensive searches were conducted across the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from the inception of these databases through 1 January, 2025. To be included, studies had to consist of clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental, or ex

Thriving in the wake of a storm: A systematic qualitative review & meta-synthesis on facilitating post-traumatic growth in patients living with Acquired Brain Injury.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) often results in significant challenges, yet it may also facilitate Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). This review explores a critical question: "What are the main factors contributing to PTG following ABI, and what potential barriers to its development are perceived by ABI survivors?" Here we aim to systematically uncover these contributors and barriers to PTG through a meta-synthesis, involving a comprehensive review of previously published qualitative research on this topic. A literature search was conducted across PsycINFO, CINAHL, and MEDLINE up to December 2022 to i

Posttraumatic Growth and Second Victim Distress Resulting From Medical Mishaps Among Physicians and Nurses.

Medical mishaps are well-known sources of distress. However, some mishaps may give medical professionals an opportunity to experience personal growth. We examined the associations between medical mishaps, second victim distress, and posttraumatic growth. A total of 157 physicians and 139 nurses completed a survey that included questions about mishaps, Second Victim Experience and Support Tool and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Overall, 82.8% of the physicians and 48.9% of the nurses experienced at least one mishap. Lack of training, rumination, and impact of mishaps were associated with d

Applicability of the Hebrew Bible to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Growth.

Since the new millennium, biblical scholars have begun to reread certain writings in the Hebrew Bible through the concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. Some scholars believe such a reading is legitimate, whereas others think it problematic, and still, others hold a midway perspective. This article argues for the midway, the position that accepts the applicability of the Hebrew Bible to today's psychological concepts but calls for caution. Because ancient Israelites reacted to traumatic events and distinguished the human mind from the body like modern people, it

The challenging journey from trauma to post-traumatic growth: Lived experiences of facilitating and hindering factors.

BACKGROUND: Many people experience psychological trauma during their lifetime, often negatively affecting their mental and physical health. Post-traumatic growth is a positive psychological change that may occur in an individual after having processed and coped with trauma. This journey, however, has not been studied enough. AIM: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore people's experience of suffering psychological trauma, the personal effects of the trauma and the transition from trauma to post-traumatic growth. METHODS: A purposeful sample of seven women and five men, age

Emotional distress and posttraumatic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic: The case of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish society in Israel.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a range of negative responses, including emotional distress, as well as with positive changes, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Among the vulnerability factors the literature lists SES and being part of a minority group. The aim of this study is to identify patterns of responses among the ultra-Orthodox Jewish society in Israel, in terms of both emotional distress (anxiety and depression) and multiple dimensions of PTG. METHOD: The data were collected during the second wave of COVID-19 in Israel, between May and November 2020. The s

Posttraumatic growth in women who have experienced the loss of their spouse or partner.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a spouse or long-term partner has a significant impact on a woman's well-being; psychological, physical, social, spiritual, and economic. Women dealing with loss are faced with numerous stressors which place them at risk for a variety of health challenges. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of women who have lost their spouse or partner to death using the theoretical framework of posttraumatic growth (PTG) developed by Tedeschi and Calhoun. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with semi-structured interviews of 15 widows.

[Trajectories of childhood psychological trauma: Pathways from stressful events - to mental disorders, recovery, or post-traumatic growth].

This review synthesizes current perspectives on outcomes following childhood psychological trauma. When children are exposed to stressful events with similar objective parameters, they may follow distinct developmental trajectories, including resilience, post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or more severe personality disorders. Trauma is a dynamic process shaped by interactions among factors at three levels. The analysis addresses initial conditions of trauma exposure, including pre-traumatic factors such as attachment quality, neurobiological and genetic predispositio

Rumination, Basic Beliefs, and Posttraumatic Growth in Cancer Patients: A Moderated Mediation Model.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a highly distressing and traumatic experience that can significantly impact individuals' psychological well-being. Whereas many cancer patients may experience negative psychological outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress symptoms, a subset of individuals also reports positive psychological changes known as posttraumatic growth. OBJECTIVE: To contribute to theory-driven development of these treatments by exploring the role of deliberate rumination in posttraumatic growth, along with the basic beliefs that might shape it. METHODS: A sample of cancer patients (n = 139) com

Posttraumatic Growth in Sex Offenders.

In recent qualitative studies, posttraumatic growth has been highlighted as a possible sign of change in how offenders relate to their basic existential needs. In this article, we present results of a pilot study with a mixed-method design on posttraumatic growth and psychological stress in a sample of sexual offenders ( n = 30) in ongoing therapy. We performed univariate analyses and subsequent hierarchical analyses, and the results affirmed our hypothesis that posttraumatic growth is negatively associated with psychological stress. We used phenomenological analysis to identify themes in the

Post-Traumatic Growth in Adult Cancer Survivors: A Scoping Review of Psychological Factors, Predictors, and Interventions.

Post-traumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following trauma, has garnered attention in recent years within the context of cancer. This scoping review aims to synthesise and map PTG-related studies published in the last 5 years among adult cancer populations. A comprehensive literature search identified 109 eligible studies published between 2018 and 2023, predominantly cross-sectional in design, focusing on various cancer types, with a significant proportion examining breast cancer. The findings reveal that PTG is consistently associated with cognitive, emotional, s

Longitudinal and transcultural assessment of the relationship between hallucinogens, well-being, and post-traumatic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of the global population. This paper presents the results of a longitudinal transcultural study that was begun at the peak of the pandemic (in April, 2020). An online survey was used to collect data from English-, Spanish-, and Portuguese-speaking participants. The survey collected information about sociodemographics, lifestyle activities, COVID-19-related circumstances, and drug use (with an emphasis on hallucinogenic drugs), as well as involving psychometric questionnaires. Users of hallucinogenic drugs had higher

Turning pain into strength: prosocial behaviours in coping with trauma.

Background: Various coping strategies have been shown to alleviate the negative effects of trauma, yet the significance of prosocial behaviour in this realm has been notably underexplored. The present study explored the hypothesis that engaging in prosocial behaviour mitigates the impacts of trauma by promoting a sense of competence and relatedness, post-traumatic growth (PTG), and reconstruction of meaning. Methods: Three consecutive studies were conducted with college students to compare differences in consequence of prosocial behaviours between a trauma group and a control group. Correlates of post-traumatic growth among persons bereaved from cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research identified that cancer bereavement can lead to post-traumatic growth (PTG). Although PTG and its correlates are well explored in cancer patients and survivors, persons bereaved from cancer have received scant attention. Therefore, the present review attempts to identify the correlates of PTG among persons bereaved from cancer. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science, APA PsycNet, Science Direct, Scopus, and Wiley was conducted to identify quantitative studies published in English, resulting in 12 eligible reports being included in the final analysis.

Posttraumatic Growth and Posttraumatic Depreciation: Associations with Core Beliefs and Rumination.

BACKGROUND: The positive transformation (i.e., posttraumatic growth, PTG) that can emerge after the struggles associated with a stressful life event has been widely investigated. However, less attention has been paid to the negative posttraumatic changes (i.e., posttraumatic depreciation, PTD) that might occur after a traumatic experience. This study aimed to investigate the role of a series of psychological factors (e.g., disruption of core beliefs, rumination, and depressive symptoms) in predicting PTG and PTD, separately considered. METHODS: To reach this goal, 601 participants who experie
