A comparative study of carticaine and prilocaine in epidural anaesthesia.

Carticaine and prilocaine (without adrenaline) in epidural anaesthesia were compared in a double blind study. Carticaine and prilocaine were used in 2 % concentration without adrenaline. The latency time was not significantly different, but carticaine was a shorter acting local anaesthetic. The motor block in both series was similar. Carticaine is a good and reliable analgesic in short operations but in operations longer than one and a half hours catheter technique, adrenaline addition or local anaesthetics of longer duration ought to be used.

[Intoxication with prilocaine/lidocaine can cause serious methemoglobinemia].

Prilocaine/lidocaine is widely used as local anesthetic in children for cannulation and minor surgical procedures. Usually it is unproblematic but it is important to adhere to recommended dose to avoid serious complications. Excessive amount of prilocaine/lidocaine, large application area, prolonged application time or repeated application can, especially in infants, cause methemoglobinemia with clinical symptoms. In severe cases intensive care and antidote treatment with Methylene blue may be required. We report three infants who were overdosed with prilocaine/lidocaine, two of them due to in

A randomised study of lidocaine and prilocaine for spinal anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Transient neurologic symptoms (TNS) are common after lidocaine-induced spinal anaesthesia (SA). Recent data indicate that TNS may be less frequent after prilocaine-induced spinal anaesthesia, for which reason the isobaric solution was compared with lidocaine. METHODS: One hundred patients scheduled for short urologic procedures under spinal anaesthesia were randomised to receive 80 mg prilocaine or lidocaine, both 20 mg/ml. The clinical course and the duration of anaesthesia were monitored. The following day an anaesthesiologist unaware of the randomisation interviewed the patient

Galactography without discomfort using lidocaine/prilocaine anesthetic cream.

BACKGROUND: Galactography (ductography) is the technique of choice for studying pathologic nipple discharge. It is sometimes difficult or even impossible to perform cannulation of the ductal orifice because of the discomfort caused to the patient. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) containing lidocaine and prilocaine applied as a cream to reduce discomfort during galactography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 46 patients with abnormal nipple secretion underwent galactography. The patients were distributed in non-randomized form into two groups (A and B)

Diagnosis of Brugada's syndrome after subarachnoid injection of prilocaine.

Brugada syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disease affecting sodium ion channels. It is characterised by right bundle branch block and ST elevation in the right precordial leads, and with no structural cardiac abnormalities. It is associated with sudden death. This disease may be unmasked by certain drugs and sudden changes in autonomic tone. Local anaesthetics may increase ECG changes due to a blockade of the sodium channels, mainly depending on the dose and the type of anaesthetic. Thus, there have been reported electrocardiographic changes consistent with Brugada syndrome, triggered

[Liposuction with consequences: what to consider when using prilocaine].

Aetiologically, prilocaine-induced methaemoglobinaemia is a rare form of acquired methaemoglobinaemia, which occurs rarely in the first place. The following report highlights a potentially dangerous complication arising after application of prilocaine during liposuction.A young female visited the Accident and Emergency Department following a pre-syncopal fall. As a consequence of her fall, she experienced debilitating wrist pain and exhibited a laceration on her chin. She had undergone liposuction of the lower extremity as an outpatient approximately 12 hours earlier and received regional anae

Histopathology after lidocaine/prilocaine cream administration for vulvar biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Case series have described disruptive histopathologic changes following lidocaine/prilocaine cream anesthetic for biopsies. METHODS: A study of histopathologic changes was performed following a randomized trial comparing topical lidocaine/prilocaine cream to 1% lidocaine injection anesthesia for vulvar biopsy. Histopathology was reviewed by two independent dermatopathologists blinded to the type of anesthetic. Specimens were scored on six histopathologic criteria described in the literature. Individual scores for each histopathologic feature and the total score across features wer

Prilocaine elimination by isolated perfused rat lung and liver.

Prilocaine is assumed to undergo significant elimination by extrahepatic organs and to differ in this respect from other commonly used local anaesthetics. In order to clarify whether the lung may play an important role as a site of elimination of prilocaine, the kinetic parameters were studied in isolated perfused rat lungs and were compared to those of isolated livers. Furthermore, the structurally related compounds bupivacaine and mepivacaine were also investigated in this system. Prilocaine was dispersed into a relatively large apparent distribution volume in perfused rat lung (139 ml versu

Risk of systemic toxicity with topical lidocaine/prilocaine: a review.

The eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine (EMLA, APP Pharmaceuticals, LLC.) is an anesthetic cream frequently used by dermatologists. Although side effects of EMLA are usually mild local skin reactions (ie, edema, pallor, erythema), more severe complications can be encountered including methemoglobinemia, central nervous system toxicity, and cardiotoxicity. This article reviewed the literature regarding risk of systemic toxicity associated with use of EMLA in the pediatric and adult population. All 12 clinical trials evaluating the safety of EMLA in either the pediatric or adult populat

[Methemoglobinemia in the newborn infant--caused by prilocaine?-- A case report].

The occurrence of postpartum cyanosis is primarily linked to pulmonary or cardiac causes. However, under differential diagnoses, methaemoglobinaemia should also be taken into consideration the causes of which may have toxical or hereditary origins. Diagnosis can be made by photospectrometical analysis of the methaemoglobin level in blood. Pathogenetical evidence is obtained by way of reduction method with methylen blue. This method will lead to consistently reliable results only, if the methaemoglobinaemia is of toxic nature. An example of toxically induced neonatal methaemoglobinaemia, which

A Case Report of Prilocaine-Induced Methemoglobinemia after Liposuction Procedure.

Prilocaine-induced methemoglobinemia is a rarely seen condition. In this paper, a case is presented with methemoglobinemia developed secondary to prilocaine use in a liposuction procedure, and the importance of this rarely seen condition is emphasized. A 20-year-old female patient presented with complaints of prostration, lassitude, shivering, shortness of breath, and cyanosis. It was learned that the patient underwent nearly 1000 mg prilocaine infiltration 8 hours priorly during a liposuction procedure. At admission, her blood pressure (130/80 mmHg), pulse rate (140 bpm), body temperature (36

2% lidocaine versus 3% prilocaine for oral and maxillofacial surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the speed of action and injection discomfort of 2% lidocaine and 3% prilocaine for upper teeth extractions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients were included in the prilocaine 3% group, and 46 in the lidocaine 2% control group. After all injections, soft and hard tissue numbness was objectively gauged by dental probe at intervals of 15 s. Moreover, the pain of the injections was recorded by the patients after each treatment on standard 100 mm visual analog scales, tagged at the endpoints with "no pain" (0 mm) and "unbearable pain" (100 mm). RESULTS: There were

Lidocaine-prilocaine cream for local-anesthesia chalazion incision in children.

BACKGROUND: Chalazia are not uncommon in children. If conservative therapy for them fails, incision and drainage are necessary and usually require a general anesthetic, which increases costs and risks. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five children (3 to 8 years old) had a eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine applied to the skin of the eyelid for 1 hour. Then local anesthetic was injected into the same site. RESULTS: The local anesthetic injection was painless, permitting successful incision and drainage in all cases. CONCLUSION: Lidocaine-prilocaine cream permits local anesthetic injection in

Plasma prilocaine and mepivacaine concentrations after combined lumbosacral plexus block.

In a pharmacokinetic study of combined sciatic/3-in-1 block for lower limb surgery, the two moderate-acting local anaesthetics prilocaine and mepivacaine were compared. The mean maximum venous plasma concentrations of mepivacaine were more than twice as high as when prilocaine was used as anaesthetic (5.1 micrograms/ml vs. 2.37 micrograms/ml). When used in combination with the former, ornipressin did not reduce plasma concentrations of mepivacaine to values which were below the threshold for toxic symptoms (5-6 mg/ml). The peak plasma concentrations exceeded the threshold of 5 micrograms/ml in
