Language abilities and progress in a direct instruction reading program for students with learning disabilities.

Direct instruction reading programs have been found to be a successful way to teach reading to many, but not all, students with learning disabilities. This study investigated whether reading improvement for students with learning disabilities receiving reading instruction through a direct instruction reading program might be related to their language abilities. The reading progress of 26 students (19 male, 7 female), 7 to 10 years old, was measured over 2 years. In addition, phonological and syntactic abilities were assessed. The results indicated that phonological ability was related to progr

Progression of language complexity during treatment with the Lidcombe Program for early stuttering intervention.

The Lidcombe Program is an operant treatment for early stuttering. Outcomes indicate that the program is effective; however, the underlying mechanisms leading to a successful reduction of stuttering remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine whether fluency achieved with the Lidcombe Program was accompanied by concomitant reduction of utterance length and decreases in linguistic complexity. Standardized language tests were administered pretreatment to 4 male preschool children. Spontaneous language samples were taken 2 weeks prior to treatment, at Weeks 1, 4, 8, and 12 during t

Exploring the relationships among language input-output, vocabulary knowledge, and English Reading development of emergent bilinguals in dual language immersion programs.

Learning to read in a second language (L2) poses unique challenges for emergent bilingual (EB) children. This study examines whether Spanish-English EB children's vocabulary skills in Spanish and English mediate the relationship between their language input-output and English (L2) reading skills. The sample included 338 Latina/o EB children in first and third grades enrolled in dual-language immersion (DLI) programs in the United States. Results from the multivariate regression model revealed differences in language input-output at home, with third graders reported using more English than firs

Facilitators and Barriers to Home Exercise Program Adherence in Aphasia: Speech-Language Pathologists' Perspectives.

PURPOSE: Home exercise programs (HEPs) are beneficial for the rehabilitation process, yet adherence remains low (30%-50%). People with aphasia (PWA) face unique challenges due to deficits in language comprehension and/or expression, but research on facilitators and barriers to achieving HEP adherence in this population is limited. This study examines speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') perspectives on factors that facilitate or hinder adherence to HEPs in PWA. METHOD: A 37-item cross-sectional online survey was administered to SLPs treating PWA. A nonprobability purposive sampling method wa

A systematic meta-analytic review of evidence for the effectiveness of the 'Fast ForWord' language intervention program.

BACKGROUND: Fast ForWord is a suite of computer-based language intervention programs designed to improve children's reading and oral language skills. The programs are based on the hypothesis that oral language difficulties often arise from a rapid auditory temporal processing deficit that compromises the development of phonological representations. METHODS: A systematic review was designed, undertaken and reported using items from the PRISMA statement. A literature search was conducted using the terms 'Fast ForWord''Fast For Word''Fastforword' with no restriction on dates of publication. Foll

Developing an "essential functions" rubric: purposes and applications for speech-language-hearing academic programs.

This article describes the purpose and application of an essential functions rubric for prospective and current students engaged in the study of communication sciences and disorders. Adopted in 2007 by the Council on Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD), the essential functions rubric identifies core skills and attributes in five areas: communication, motor, intellectual-cognitive, sensory/observational, and behavioral/social. CAPCSD does not intend the rubric to be prescriptive but rather expects that it will be adapted to reflect the unique mission or circumstan

The effect of a standardized nursing language education program on documentation practices among pediatric nurses.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistencies in pediatric nursing documentation compromise patient safety and limit the profession's ability to demonstrate its clinical contributions. Standardized nursing language (SNL), encompassing NANDA International (NANDA-I) nursing diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), provides a structured framework to improve documentation quality. However, inadequate nurse education in SNL remains a significant barrier to its effective implementation, particularly in pediatric care settings. PURPOSE: This study examined the

Malaysian speech-language pathology students' reflections about their participation in an AAC training program.

Most speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Malaysia practice with an undergraduate degree, which provides them with limited knowledge about and training in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This limited knowledge and training may affect their confidence and competence when introducing and using AAC with individuals for whom it is required. This study aimed to obtain feedback, via semi-structured interviews, from a group of 11 Malaysian university students who participated in an AAC training program about their experiences participating in and the effectiveness of the training

Language delays, reading delays, and learning difficulties: interactive elements requiring multidimensional programming.

Researchers have hypothesized four levels of instructional dialogue and claimed that teachers can improve children's language development by incorporating these dialogue levels in their classrooms. It has also been hypothesized that enhancing children's early language development enhances children's later reading development. This quasi-experimental research study investigated both of these hypotheses using a collaborative service delivery model for Grade 1 children with language difficulties from a socially and economically disadvantaged urban community in Australia. Comparing the end-of-year

Efficient and Reliable Data Extraction in Radiation Oncology using Python Programming Language: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In recent years, data science approaches have entered health-care systems such as radiology, pathology, and radiation oncology. In our pilot study, we developed an automated data mining approach to extract data from a treatment planning system (TPS) with high speed, maximum accuracy, and little human interaction. We compared the amount of time required for manual data extraction versus the automated data mining technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Python programming script was created to extract specified parameters and features pertaining to patients and treatment (a t

Language-specific strategy for programming hearing aids - A double-blind randomized controlled crossover study.

OBJECTIVE: Voice-aligned compression (VAC) is a method used in Oticon's hearing aids to provide more comfortable hearing without sacrificing speech discrimination. The complex, non-linear compression curve for the VAC strategy is designed based on the frequency profile of certain spoken Western languages. We hypothesized that hearing aids could be further customized for Japanese-speaking users by modifying the compression curve using the frequency profile of spoken Japanese. METHODS: A double-blind randomized controlled crossover study was performed to determine whether or not Oticon's modifi
