In the midnight hour: Cancer and nightmares. A review of theories and interventions in psycho-oncology.

OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were: (1) to explore cancer patients' complaints of poor sleep, which often involve a combination of somatic symptoms and nightmares; and (2) to understand these sleep disturbances in the light of modern dream theories and intervention modalities. METHOD: The literature search originated with several major articles (Revonsuo, 2000; Krakow & Zadra, 2006; Hobson, 2009) which then opened up the search through their references. We also used the database PubMed, and employed the following key words: cancer, nightmares/dreams, sleep disturbances, and dream the

Expanding Psycho-Oncology Services in India: Perspectives From Physicians in Cancer Care Centres.

BACKGROUND: Given the rising importance of mental health in current times, it also calls for attention to how cancer care services can be improved upon by integrating the emotional needs of patients and caregivers in India. The country's unique diversity and socio-cultural fabric presents unseen challenges; therefore, this study explores the enablers and barriers of integrating psycho-oncology services in India through the lens of physicians working in cancer care settings. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 physicians (medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiat

Psycho-oncology: structure and profiles of European centers treating patients with gynecological cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Psycho-oncological counseling should be an integrated part of modern cancer therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the structures and interests of psycho-oncology services within European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO) centers. METHODS: In 2010, a survey, which consisted of 15 questions regarding organization of psycho-oncological services and interests in training and research, was sent to all ESGO-accredited centers (n = 41). RESULTS: The response rate was 65.8% (27 centers). 96.3% (n = 26) of the surveys came from universities, and 3.7% (n = 1) came from nonacad

Time-bounded uncertainty in childhood cancer survivorship: a psycho-oncology perspective on result communication.

Follow-up after childhood cancer may be clinically routine, but it can still leave families in a poorly defined waiting period. A scan or blood test may be part of routine surveillance; however, the days that follow can feel far from ordinary. Families may not know when the results will arrive, who will interpret them, or whether silence has meaning. This Perspective proposes event-related distress windows (ERDWs) as an early service-design heuristic rather than a diagnosis or validated construct. The contribution is deliberately narrow and therefore testable: ERDW shifts attention from fear a

Historical development of psycho-oncology in Japan: From clinical observation to national cancer policy.

Psycho-oncology has emerged as a multidisciplinary field addressing the psychological, social, and behavioral dimensions of cancer. Although its development has been well documented in Western countries, Japan has followed a distinct trajectory shaped by its cultural context, healthcare system, and national cancer policy. Building on early clinical observations, epidemiological studies clarified the prevalence, determinants, and longitudinal course of psychological distress across the cancer trajectory. Communication-preference research subsequently informed the development of the SHARE commun

Psycho-Oncological Self-Help Groups in Bavaria: The Current Situation and Suggestions for Improvement.

BACKGROUND: Self-help groups (SHGs) are an important cornerstone of the German health care system. Especially collaborations of SHGs with cancer centers enable active patient involvement in cancer care. We investigated the current situation and unmet needs of Bavarian SHGs in order to point out possible options of action. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with Bavarian psycho-oncological SHGs. Via e-mail, an online survey was sent to 150 SHGs registered at the BZKF (Bavarian Cancer Research Center). We assessed activities and needs of the SHGs as well as the nature of collaboratio

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment as a crisis of the self: a Winnicottian psycho-oncological perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is typically conceptualized as a neurocognitive side effect of cancer treatment, with emotional distress framed as a secondary or reactive consequence. This paper aimed to reconceptualize CRCI from a psycho-oncological perspective by examining how acquired cognitive unreliability disrupts self-experience, identity, and continuity of being, using Donald W. Winnicott's theory of the self and environment. METHODS: This theoretical paper synthesized Winnicottian concepts-including the True Self, False Self, holding, and play-to develop a

Referral and Activity in Specialist Psycho-Oncology Services: A Survey of Provision in England and Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Distress is a common, clinically significant response to cancer, yet specialist psycho-oncology provision varies across the UK, and national service-level data on staffing, access and activity are lacking. AIMS: To provide an updated picture of referral, access, workforce and activity of specialist psycho-oncology services across the UK. METHODS: A cross-sectional service survey distributed UK-wide via professional networks used an 18-item questionnaire capturing staffing, referrals, waiting times, activity and outcome measures for 2022/2023. Activity was expressed per specialist

A longitudinal analysis on alcohol consumption in patients with cancer undergoing psycho-oncological treatment.

The negative impact of alcohol consumption on cancer development and progression is well-established in oncologic research, yet it receives surprisingly little attention from patients with cancer, the public, and even oncology professionals. A cancer diagnosis can lead to significant psychological distress, including high levels of depression and anxiety. For patients with cancer experiencing high levels of psychological burden, psycho-oncological care is available to help manage these symptoms and the overall impact of their condition. Alcohol consumption can serve as a coping mechanism for p

Psychological Burden and Psycho-Oncological Interventions for Patients With Hepatobiliary Cancers-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, hepatobiliary cancers are frequent diseases and often accompanied by a poor prognosis. These cancers, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CHC) being the most frequent, are often associated with a considerable amount of psychological burden such as anxiety, depressiveness, and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL) which may lead to psychiatric comorbidities. This systematic review gives an overview on psychological burden and on the effectiveness of psycho-oncological interventions for patients with HCC and CHC. METHODS: The databases Pub

The OECI model: the experience of INT Milan with a focus on the integration of psycho-oncology support.

The procedure for Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) accreditation identified the formation of MDTs for the diagnosis and scheduling of primary treatment with integration of supportive care as a key strength at Istituto Nazionale Tumori (INT). The opportunities for improvement highlighted by the OECI peer review inspired a study on the evaluation of psychological distress, with a view to integrating this evaluation into global patient management and to defining standardized criteria for the provision of psychological services. This article describes the OECI accreditation experi

Nothing About Us Without Us: Principles for Lived Experience-Informed Psycho-Oncology Education and Training.

Lived experience is increasingly recognised as an essential source of expertise in healthcare research, service design, policy and quality improvement. In psycho-oncology, consumer involvement is now widely encouraged in research and service development; however comparatively little attention has been paid to the role of lived experience in educating and training the psycho-oncology workforce. We argue that involving people with lived experience should become a minimum requirement in developing, delivering, and evaluating psycho-oncology education and training. Given that psycho-oncology is fu

Sex on inpatient medical units among acutely medically ill adults: a psycho-oncology case study.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual health is an important part of emotional and physical functioning. For patients undergoing cancer treatment, sexual health is an often-overlooked aspect of care for a variety of reasons. It is further overlooked for patients who are undergoing extended hospital admissions. There are no current standardized guidelines or recommendations around patients admitted to hospitals for extended periods of time, and as such, is left to the discretion of floor staff or individual hospital units. Often, there are no guidelines at all, which potentially puts patients in unsafe or emoti

Patient perspectives: Kundalini yoga meditation techniques for psycho-oncology and as potential therapies for cancer.

The ancient system of Kundalini Yoga (KY) includes a vast array of meditation techniques. Some were discovered to be specific for treating psychiatric disorders and others are supposedly beneficial for treating cancers. To date, 2 clinical trials have been conducted for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The first was an open uncontrolled trial and the second a single-blinded randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing a KY protocol against the Relaxation Response and Mindfulness Meditation (RRMM) techniques combined. Both trials showed efficacy on all psychological scales using the

[Prevalence of psychiatric disorders and factors associated with delirium in patients referred to a psycho-oncology service].

The charts of 628 cancer patients, referred to the psycho-oncology service at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec from 1994 to 1997, were reviewed in 1997 to determine the nature, the prevalence, and the characteristics of psychiatric diagnoses, particularly delirium. Results showed that among patients diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, 54.5% had adjustment disorders, 13.1% suffered from delirium and 10.9% from major depression. Statistically significant associations were observed between delirium and the use of opioids (odds-ratio (OR): 3.87, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.28-6.57), corticosteroid

Dealing with the Vicissitudes and Abject Consequences of Head and Neck Cancer: A Vital Role for Psycho-Oncology.

Patients with head and neck cancer face important life-altering effects in appearance and function, affecting distress and quality of life and requiring the involvement of a multidisciplinary team. Psycho-oncology makes an important contribution to the field, as head and neck cancers carry a huge adaptational toll. To illustrate the value of this discipline, we report two cases of patients with advanced head and neck cancer for which the treatment-related body changes were of major significance. A commentary by the treating surgeons and psycho-oncologists precedes a general discussion about th

Large Language Models for Distress Rating in Korean Psycho-Oncology Interviews: Exploratory Clinician-Benchmarked Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric distress is common among patients with cancer; yet, systematic interview-based screening remains difficult to scale in routine clinical care. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promise as scalable tools for mental health assessment, but most existing evidence is derived from clinician-authored records, translated text, or proxy data. The performance characteristics, error patterns, and explanatory behaviors of contemporary LLMs when applied to authentic, non-English psychiatric interviews remain insufficiently characterized. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study evalu

Schizophrenia as Potential Trigger for Melanoma Development and Progression! The Psycho-Neuro-Endocrine-Oncology (P.N.E.O) Network!

BACKGROUND: Skin, nervous tissue, dopamine and melanoma share a common neuroectodermal origin. Hence, processes that modulate nervous tissue formation, patient mental status, motor regulation of individuals, and skin cancerogenesis are inextricably linked. Psycho-neuro-endocrine oncology (or dermato-oncology), i.e. P.N.E.O., is a new model or trend in medicine and science presented for the first time in the world literature by us, that aims to examine the relationship between the mental state, the hormones and the malignant transformation. Schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease are the two main

[Psycho-oncological and psychosexual consequences of penile cancer: what can we offer our patients?].

Penile cancer is a rare but highly distressing form of cancer in men, associated with both physical and psychosocial challenges. With an incidence of 1-10 cases per 100,000 men, its prevalence varies worldwide, with higher rates observed in developing countries. The disease often leads to physical deficits, including loss of the penis and impairments in sexual life, which can result in significant psychological burdens such as anxiety, depression, and a diminished self-esteem. Stigmatization and social isolation play a central role, especially in cultures where masculinity and sexuality are cl
