Psychophysiological studies of eating disorders by means of visual evoked responses.

The psychic conditions of 14 patients with eating disorders were examined psychophysiologically. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and vertex potentials (V-potentials) as visual evoked responses (VERs) were recorded simultaneously at rest and during hyperventilation. The correlation between manifest anxiety measured by the MAS test and the increased amplitudes of VERs during hyperventilation was examined. The results showed that the psychic conditions of the typical anorexia nervosa patients were similar to a state of alexithymia, as they showed less manifest anxiety. The amplitudes of the VEPs

Exploring psychophysiological indices of disruptive behavior disorders and their subtypes of aggression.

BACKGROUND: Psychophysiological measures of arousal are often considered as potential biomarkers for disruptive behavior disorder (DBD). Nevertheless, the evidence is mixed, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of DBD and different subtypes of aggression. Additionally, arousal measures of the central nervous system (e.g. electroencephalogram: EEG) are underrepresented compared to peripheral ones (heart rate: HR; skin conductance: SC). METHODS: We recorded HR, SC, and EEG (frequency band power at three electrodes Fz, Cz, Pz) in 49 participants with DBD, and 15 typically developing peers durin

Psychophysiological ambulatory assessment of affective dysregulation in borderline personality disorder.

Many experts now believe that pervasive problems in affect regulation constitute the central area of dysfunction in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, data is sparse and inconclusive. We hypothesized that patients with BPD, in contrast to healthy gender and nationality-matched controls, show a higher frequency and intensity of self-reported emotions, altered physiological indices of emotions, more complex emotions and greater problems in identifying specific emotions. We took a 24-hour psychophysiological ambulatory monitoring approach to investigate affect regulation during every

Psychophysiological reactions to two levels of voluntary hyperventilation in panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) patients usually react with more self-reported distress to voluntary hyperventilation (HV) than do comparison groups. Less consistently PD patients manifest physiological differences such as more irregular breathing and slower normalization of lowered end-tidal pCO(2) after HV. To test whether physiological differences before, during, or after HV would be more evident after more intense HV, we designed a study in which 16 PD patients and 16 non-anxious controls hyperventilated for 3 min to 25 mmHg, and another 19 PD patients and another 17 controls to 20 mmHg. Patients reac

[The psychophysiological basis of the compensatory development of visual perception in vision disorders].

At comparison of the data obtained in psychophysical and electrophysiological studies, disturbances were revealed of neurophysiological mechanisms of visual perception in children with the diseases of retinocortical tract. For compensation of the disturbances and development of perception a method is suggested of specific activation of neuronal formations based on their fundamental property--plasticity. The method consists in using rhythmical repeated stimulation of eyes with images which widely vary by the brightness, contrast, colour, form, orientation and spatial position in the visual fiel

A psychophysiological investigation of threat and reward sensitivity in individuals with panic disorder and/or major depressive disorder.

Heightened sensitivity to threat and reduced sensitivity to reward are potential mechanisms of dysfunction in anxiety and depressive disorders, respectively. However, few studies have simultaneously examined whether these mechanisms are unique or common to these disorders. In this study, sensitivity to predictable and unpredictable threat (measured by startle response during threat anticipation) and sensitivity to reward (measured by frontal electroencephalographic [EEG] asymmetry during reward anticipation) were assessed in 4 groups (N = 191): those with (1) panic disorder (PD) without a life

Discarding personal possessions increases psychophysiological activation in patients with hoarding disorder.

Difficulty discarding is the core behavioral symptom of hoarding disorder (HD). Patients with HD report greater subjective distress when discarding their own possessions as compared to others' possessions. To date, no prior studies have examined psychophysiological activation, an objective measure of anxious arousal, during discarding among individuals with HD. The current study assessed psychophysiological responses during a baseline resting period and two discarding tasks, one involving personal possessions and the other involving matched control ("experimenter-owned") items in 52 patients w

Psychophysiological assessment of respiratory function in panic disorder: evidence for a hyperventilation subtype.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found differences in respiratory function between panic disorder and other anxiety disorder populations. These differences have been explained as reflecting either a) a specific feature of panic disorder, b) merely a sign of increased general arousal, or c) a result of population sampling error. The current study addressed the question of such differences by using improved methodology over previous research. A preliminary evaluation of respiratory symptoms during panic attacks was undertaken as a means of identifying a respiratory-sensitive subtype of the panic

Respiratory psychophysiology of panic disorder: three respiratory challenges in 98 subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory abnormalities may play a central role in the pathophysiology of panic disorder. The current study was undertaken to examine the respiratory response in the largest series of subjects to date during three respiratory challenges that used improved methodology. METHOD: Fifty-nine patients with DSM-III-R panic disorder and 39 normal volunteers were challenged with 5% and 7% CO2 inhalation and room air hyperventilation separated by room air breathing with continuous spirometry. RESULTS: Patients with panic disorder were more sensitive to the anxiogenic effects of CO2 than w

Biofeedback and relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders: or are the machines really necessary?

The literature on the use of biofeedback and various forms of relaxation training in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders was reviewed; special attention was devoted to studies in which biofeedback and some form of relaxation training were compared. Based on this review, we conclude that there is no consistent advantage for one form of treatment over the other with any psychophysiological disorder for which a comparison has been made, e.g., essential hypertension, migraine headaches, premature ventricular contractions, tension headaches, temporomandibular joint pain, asthma, primary

Exploring the Role of Hyperfocus in the Psychophysiology of Probable Bruxism and Painful Temporomandibular Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are multifactorial conditions in which cognitive and behavioural traits may play an underrecognised role. Hyperfocus, defined as intense and sustained attentional engagement, has been proposed as a potential driver of heightened sensorimotor activity and pain vulnerability, yet its relevance to bruxism and painful TMD remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether hyperfocus is associated with probable bruxism and painful TMD (pTMD), and to determine whether probable bruxism mediates the relationship between hyperfocus and p

Evaluation of a cognitive psychophysiological model for management of tic disorders: an open trial.

BACKGROUND: Tic disorders, in particular chronic tic disorder and Tourette syndrome, affect about 1% of the population. The current treatment of choice is pharmacological or behavioural, addressing tics or the premonitory urges preceding tic onset. AIMS: The current study reports an open trial evaluating the effectiveness of a cognitive psychophysiological treatment addressing Tourette-specific sensorimotor activation processes rather than the tic. METHOD: Forty-nine people with Tourette syndrome and 36 people with chronic tics completed 10 weeks of individual cognitive psychophysiological t

Psychophysiological responses to idiosyncratic stress in bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

This study examined psychophysiological stress responses to idiosyncratically relevant stress in bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), in relation to autonomic cardiac control and nutritional status. A total of 81 women with BN, BED and healthy controls (HC) took part in an in sensu exposure to idiosyncratic stress. Psychological and peripheral physiological parameters were measured, and tonic heart rate variability, nutritional status, and types of stress were determined. In response to stress exposure, both eating disordered groups showed a stronger reactivity of sadness, and

Clinical-psychophysiological studies of patients with panic attacks with and without agoraphobic disorders.

A total of 77 patients with panic attacks (PA) with and without agoraphobic disorders were studied, along with 28 healthy subjects. Use of clinical-neurological investigation methods was supplemented by psychological methods, EEG recordings, and auditory event-linked evoked potentials (EP). Patients with PA with agoraphobic disorders were found to be characterized by significant decreases in the power density of the alpha rhythm and increases in the power density of the beta rhythm in the right hemisphere, reflecting significant activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation; th

Dreaming in posttraumatic stress disorder: A critical review of phenomenology, psychophysiology and treatment.

This review summarizes the available knowledge on the phenomenology of posttraumatic dreams. Posttraumatic nightmares are reported by up to 70% of individuals suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An extensive review of polysomnographic studies suggests that neither this high incidence nor the occurrence of posttraumatic nightmares throughout the sleep cycle can be explained by altered REM sleep parameters. The assumption that a reduction of dream recall may serve as a coping mechanism in PTSD patients is questionable. About 50% of posttraumatic dreams comprise exact replication

[Clinical and psychophysiological study of patients with panic attacks with or without agoraphobic disorders].

Seventy-seven patients with panic attacks (PA) with or without agoraphobic disorders and 28 healthy controls have been studied using clinico-neurological and psychological methods as well as EEG and auditory event-related evoked potentials (EP) recording. PA patients with agoraphobic disorders featured a significant decrease of density of a-rhythm power and an increase of b-rhythm power in the right hemisphere that reflected a substantial activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation. At the same time, a significant increase of q-rhythm power in temporal areas of the right hemi

Childhood trauma, borderline personality symptomatology, and psychophysiological and pain disorders in adulthood.

In the empirical literature, there is support for the idea of a relationship between childhood trauma and various psychophysiological as well as pain disorders, and between borderline personality symptomatology and somatic preoccupation, as well as chronic pain. However, to date, no single study has examined the relationships between childhood trauma and borderline personality symptomatology, and the number of psychophysiological and pain disorders in adulthood. In this study, the authors examined these relationships and found no significant correlation between borderline personality symptomat

On reversible deafness, generalized anxiety disorder, and the motoric brain: a psychophysiological perspective.

Electromyographic (EMG) recording during presentation of loud sounds revealed central motor inhibition in a rare case of conversion disorder with deafness. Two subjects in whom hypnotic deafness was induced resembled the patient. In contrast, patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) showed a significantly delayed return of EMG to baseline, compared with normals and schizophrenics following administration of auditory startle stimuli.
