Dental radiology accounts for 26% of all medical radiological examinations worldwide and 0.2% of the overall collective dose. The most common dental exposure is intraoral bitewing radiography, which is a procedure used to examine the interproximal surfaces of the teeth and is particularly useful for the detection of dental caries and the evaluation of alveolar bone levels. In Sweden, regulations require patients to have a 0.25 mm lead-equivalent thyroid shield during intraoral exposures. The aim of this project is to do a Monte Carlo simulation of the absorbed doses from a bitewing exposure an

BACKGROUND: Proximal caries detection remains challenging because early lesions are often inaccessible to visual inspection and bitewing radiography exposes patients to ionizing radiation. Quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) and near-infrared imaging integrated into intraoral scanners are proposed as non-ionizing adjuncts. This study compared the diagnostic performance of a handheld QLF device (QrayPen C, Aiobio) and an intraoral scanner with near-infrared imaging (NIRI) (iTero Element 5D, Align Technology) for proximal caries across clinically relevant ICCMS radiographic thresholds.

OBJECTIVES: Bitewing radiography is considered to be of high diagnostic value in caries detection, but owing to projections, lesions may remain undetected. The novel bitewing plus (BW +) technology enables scrolling through radiographs in different directions and angles. The present study aimed at comparing BW + with other 2D and 3D imaging methods in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and user reliability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five human cadavers were used in this study. In three cadavers, natural teeth were transplanted post-mortem. BW + , two-dimensional (digital sensors, imaging plates,

Dental caries is a very common chronic disease that may lead to pain, infection, and tooth loss if its diagnosis at an early stage remains undetected. Traditional methods of tactile-visual examination and bitewing radiography, are subject to intrinsic variability due to factors such as examiner experience and image quality. This variability can result in inconsistent diagnoses. Thus, the present study aimed to develop a deep learning-based AI model using the YOLOv8 algorithm for improving interproximal caries detection in bitewing radiographs. In this retrospective study on 552 radiographs, a

OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of LFpen (DIAGNOdent pen) with two different wedge-shaped tips to conventional bitewing radiography (BW) for detecting proximal secondary caries at the cervical margin of amalgam restorations in vitro.
METHODS: Seventy-five molars with class II amalgam restorations were selected. Depending on the marginal filling extension, data was subdivided into a crown group (C), when the filling ended in enamel, and into a root group (R), when the filling ended beyond the cementum-enamel junction. To test local grey-scale changes on dental bitewing radiographs near filling margins for image acquisition. Forty approximal preparations in caries-free amalgam filled teeth and bitewing radiographs were acquired under standardized conditions applying four techniques. Film-based analog radiographs were digitized using flat-bed scanner (FDR). Phosphor-plate computed radiographs (PCR) were directly acquired by scanning VistaScan imaging plates. Image quality was tested using Preset Filter (PF) or manually applied IntraOral Fine Filter (IF) to enhance digital images. Local changes from digital im

The current status of dental panoramic tomography (rotational panoramic radiography) is reviewed. This technique is based on a combination of tomography and slit-beam radiography to provide an image of both jaws on a single film. There is a greater degree of image degradation when compared with conventional radiographic techniques due to tomographic blurring, magnification and distortion, secondary images and burn-out. Meticulous patient position is essential to accommodate their jaws to the image layer determined by the manufacturers. The absorbed doses from panoramic radiography are of a sim

Dental panoramic radiographs (DPTs) are commonly taken in dental practice in the UK with the number estimated to be 2.7 million per annum. They are used to diagnose caries, periodontal disease, trauma, pathology in the jaws, supernumerary teeth and for orthodontic assessment. Panoramic radiographs are not simple projections but involve a moving X-ray source and detector plate. Ideally only the objects in the focal trough are displayed. This is achieved with a tomographic movement and one or more centre(s) of rotation. One advantage of digital radiography is hardware and software changes to opt

AIM: This was to investigate if the pattern of distribution of caries lesions detected by clinical and radiographic examinations at different diagnostic thresholds changed over a 3-year period during the course of eruption of the permanent dentition. It has been hypothesized that the contribution of bitewing radiography to caries detection in posterior teeth may increase when approximal contacts are established during maturation of the dentition.
METHODS: Clinical and radiographic caries recordings were made using the non- cavitated/enamel and cavity/dentine thresholds for caries detection am

In recent decades, dentistry has developed significantly in all areas. While in the past, caries was mainly treated operatively, the today's management has shifted toward noninvasive, minimal invasive, and, only if needed, invasive treatment options. Aiming at enabling the most noninvasive or conservative treatment option requires early caries detection, which, however, remains challenging. The progression of early or noncavitated caries lesions can nowadays be successfully controlled, as well as lesions arrested by oral hygiene procedures combined with the use of fluorides, sealants, or resin

Diagnosis of proximal caries is a difficult task. Artificial intelligence (AI) enabled diagnosis is gaining momentum. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI) smart phone application for bitewing radiography towards real-time caries lesion detection. The Efficient Det-Lite1 artificial neural network was used after training 100 radiographic images obtained from the department of Oral Medicine. Trained model was then installed in a Google Pixel 6 (GP6) smartphone as artificial intelligence app. The back-facing mobile phone video camera of GP6

Background/Objectives: Near-infrared light transillumination (NIRI) has emerged as a radiation-free adjunctive method for proximal caries detection in pediatric dentistry. However, evidence regarding its diagnostic performance in primary dentition remains limited. The aim of this prospective diagnostic accuracy study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of NIRI for detecting interproximal dentinal caries lesions in primary molars, using bitewing radiography as a pragmatic clinical reference standard. Methods: Thirty-one pediatric patients aged 5-12 years were included, contributing 273 i

Guidelines in dental radiology are designed to avoid unnecessary exposure to X-radiation and to identify individuals who may benefit from a radiographic examination. Every prescription of radiographs should be based on an evaluation of the individual patient benefit. Due to the relatively high frequency of caries among 5 year old children it is recommended to consider dental radiography for each child even without any visible caries or restorations. Furthermore, radiography should be considered at 8-9 years of age and then at 12-14, that is 1-2 years after eruption of premolars and second mola

In recent years there has been much public and professional concern about reducing patient exposure to radiation. This concern is especially appropriate for children because of their greater sensitivity to it. Exposure risks to children may be reduced by using radiography only when there is a specific clinical indication. Bitewing radiographs are indicated for detection of approximal caries in the child when the molar contacts are closed. The frequency of this examination should be determined on an individual basis. Other radiographs should be obtained only when there are clinical signs or sym

BACKGROUND: Accurate determination of bone loss at the molar furcation region by clinical detection and intraoral radiograph is challenging in many instances. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is expected to open a new horizon in periodontal assessment. The purpose of this study was to compare and correlate accuracy of molar furcation assessment via clinical detection, intraoral radiography and CBCT images.
METHODS: Eighty-three patients with chronic periodontitis who had existing CBCT scans were included. Furcation involvement was assessed on maxillary and mandibular first molars. Periodo
