Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) are a structurally diverse group of plant specialized metabolites with a long history of investigation. Although the ecophysiological functions of most BIAs are unknown, the medicinal properties of many compounds have been exploited for centuries. These include the narcotic analgesics codeine and morphine, the antimicrobial agents sanguinarine and berberine, and the antitussive and anticancer drug noscapine. BIA biosynthesis involves a restricted number of enzyme types that catalyze landmark coupling reactions and subsequent functional group modifications. A

Stauntonia hexaphylla (Lardizabalaceae) is an important medicinal plant in Korea, Japan, and China. Its leaves are used to treat many diseases because of their analgesic, sedative, and diuretic effects; however, there are few reports on their chemical constituents and biological activities. This study divided an ethanol extract into dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and water fractions. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanol extracts led to the isolation of seven compounds (1-7). To our knowledge, this is the first report of 1-7 from S. hexaphylla. The anti-inflammatory effec

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Paliurus ramosissimus (PR) is a traditional folk medicinal plant recorded in Zhonghua Bencao (Chinese Materia Medica) and local medicinal records. In this study, Paliurus ramosissimus extract (PRex) was defined as an ethanol extract prepared from PR leaves. PR leaves have traditionally been used for heat-clearing and detoxification and for relieving swelling and pain. These traditional uses are closely related to inflammation-associated conditions. Because colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and mucosal

Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) has been utilized as a food, medicine, and spiritual symbol for nearly 3000 years. The medicinal properties of lotus are largely attributed to its unique profile of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs), which includes potential anti-cancer, anti-malarial and anti-arrhythmic compounds. BIA biosynthesis in sacred lotus differs markedly from that of opium poppy and other members of the Ranunculales, most notably in an abundance of BIAs possessing the (R)-stereochemical configuration and the absence of reticuline, a major branchpoint intermediate in most BIA producer

Cancer is a complex disease, and blocking tumor angiogenesis has become one of the most promising approaches in cancer therapy. Here, an exopoly heteropolysaccharide (AQP70-2B) was firstly isolated from Akebia quinata. Monosaccharide composition indicated that the AQP70-2B was composed of rhamnose, glucose, galactose, and arabinose. The backbone of AQP70-2B consisted of →1)-l-Araf, →3)-l-Araf-(1→, →5)-l-Araf-(1→, →3,5)-l-Araf-(1→, →2,5)-l-Araf-(1→, →4)-d-Glcp-(1→, →6)-d-Galp-(1→, and →1)-d-Rhap residues. Based on the close relationship between selenium and anti-tumor activity, AQP70-2B was mod

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Barleria cristata L. is traditionally used in Indian ethnomedicine to treat inflammation, joint pain, and arthritis. Although it is widely used in traditional medicine to manage inflammatory conditions, scientific validation of its anti-arthritic potential remains limited.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the potential anti-arthritic efficacy of the methanol extract of B. cristata (MEBC) using in-silico, in-vitro, and in-vivo experimental assays.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phytoconstituents of B. cristata were analysed using UPLC-QToF-MS. Then, a series of in-sili

BACKGROUND: Recent progress toward the elucidation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid (BIA) metabolism has focused on a small number of model plant species. Current understanding of BIA metabolism in plants such as opium poppy, which accumulates important pharmacological agents such as codeine and morphine, has relied on a combination of genomics and metabolomics to facilitate gene discovery. Metabolomics studies provide important insight into the primary biochemical networks underpinning specialized metabolism, and serve as a key resource for metabolic engineering, gene discovery, and elucidation

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Akebiae Fructus, a Tujia minority folk medicine and a well-known traditional Chinese medicine for soothing the liver, regulating Qi, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, is widely used in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. However, little is known about its underlying mechanism.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the effect of Akebiae Fructus on primary dysmenorrhea model induced by estradiol benzoate and oxytocin, and to provide better understanding of the mechanism of Akebiae Fructus for primary dysmenorrhea treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pri

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a progressive pathological condition associated with proliferation of prostatic tissues, prostate enlargement, and lower-urinary tract symptoms. However, the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of BPH is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of a combination of Stauntonia hexaphylla and Cornus officinalis (SC extract) on a testosterone propionate (TP)-induced BPH model. The effect of SC extract was examined in a TP-induced human prostate adenocarcinoma cell line. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 gro

Stauntonia chinensis DC. has been utilised as a traditional herbal medicine for its anti-hyperglycemic characteristic, which has been associated with triterpene saponins. The goal of the current evaluation was to examine hypoglycemic activity and affiliated mechanism of total saponins from S. chinensis. The chemical composition was analysed by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. The fasting blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance test, insulin tolerance test, insulin and glycogen levels of type 2 diabetic db/db mice administered total saponins were quantified to determine the hypoglycemic effects. The serum lipid p
