Ranunculus hirtellus, also known as crowfoot (buttercup), has a rich tradition of use in various biological contexts. While antibacterial studies on extracts from this plant have been conducted, the phytochemical composition, antioxidant properties, and antidiabetic effects remain unexplored. In this study, the phytochemical, antioxidant, and antidiabetic effects of its methanol and aqueous extracts were investigated. Our approach involved gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), alongside quantitative and qualitative methods, for phytochemical profiles. Additionally, concerning biologica

(1) Background: Ranunculus bulumei is a flowering plant that belongs to the Ranunculus species. Several Ranunculus species, such as R. aquatilis and R. muricatus, have traditionally been used to treat fever and rheumatism throughout Asia, suggesting that plants belonging to the Ranunculus species may have anti-inflammatory effects. To our knowledge, the pharmacological activity of R. bulumei has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, we aim to assess the anti-inflammatory activity of a methanol extract that was derived from R. bulumei (Rb-ME) in macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: TianJiu (TJ) therapy, one type of cold moxibustion, applies to specific acupuncture points with herbal patches of hot nature, providing a constant irritant to the skin until the presence of hyperemia and blistering. Traditional and clinical reports suggest that TJ is an effective therapy for the treatment of jaundice with fresh Ranunculus sceleratus L. (RS), in which protoanemonin is one of the main irritant constituents. However, the therapeutic effect of TJ treatment with fresh RS against intrahepatic cholestasis has not been studied in animal experiments.

Ranunculus asiaticus is a quantitative long day plant grown for cut flowers and flowering potted plants production. We evaluated the influence of light spectrum of three light sources for end-of-day photoperiodic treatments, with different phytochrome photoequilibria (PPE) induced at plant level, on the metabolic profiling of two hybrids of R. asiaticus L., MBO and MDR, in plants from vernalized tuberous roots. The following treatments were compared with natural day length (NL): white fluorescence lamp (FL, PPE 0.84), light emitting diodes (LEDs) Red:Far Red light at 3:1 ratio (R:FR 3:1, PPE 0

Ranunculus (Crowfoot) species are numerous and they are all reputed to be counter-irritants and are used in several topical conditions. In order to study the pharmacological mechanisms of action underlying this popular use, a methanol extract of Ranunculus peltatus was tested in vitro in various assays involving eicosanoid and human elastase release by intact cells as well as in vivo, with models of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) contact dermatitis. The extract proved to be a selective inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase-1 pathway, producing the total inhibition of 12-(S)-HHTrE release at 200

Ranunculus scleratus Linn. is used in folk medicine to treat hypertension. This study was aimed at providing validation to its traditional use and to explore underlying mechanisms of action. Effects of hydro-ethanolic crude extract of the plant and its fractions on blood pressure was evaluated using direct surgical method in normotensive and in fructose induced hypertensive rats. Various doses of crude extract, RSC, (5, 10, 20, 30mg/kg) and all fractions (3, 5, 10, 20mg/kg) were studied. Results suggested that aqueous fraction of R. scleratus (RSA) produced most pronounced effects at 10mg/kg i

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive fibro-inflammatory disease in which oxidative stress (OS) promotes pancreatic stellate cells activation and fibrosis. Ranunculus repens L. (R. repens) has been used in Algerian traditional medicine to treat conditions like hepatitis and diabetes. Galectins are β-galactoside-binding lectins implicated in several pathological processes, including inflammation. This study aimed to analyse the chemical composition and evaluate the protective effects of R. repens methanol extract (RRME) in an experimental CP model, as well as in cultured pancreatic cells.

Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is critical in the progression of liver fibrosis and is a promising target for anti-hepatic fibrosis drug development. Moreover, effective pharmacological interventions targeting this pathomechanism are scarce. Our study confirms the therapeutic value of β-sitosterol, a major constituent of Ranunculus ternatus Thunb, in hepatic fibrosis and identifies its underlying mechanisms. After treatment with β-sitosterol, CCL4-induced hepatic fibrosis was reversed in mice, while inflammatory and hepatic fibrosis indices were improved. Meanwhile, we explored th

BACKGROUND: Animal trypanosomiasis is a major livestock problem due to its socioeconomic impacts in tropical countries. Currently used trypanocides are toxic, expensive, and the parasites have developed resistance to the existing drugs, which calls for an urgent need of new effective and safe chemotherapeutic agents from alternative sources such as medicinal plants. In Ethiopian traditional medicine fresh leaves of Ranunculus multifidus Forsk, are used for the treatment of animal trypanosomiasis. The present study aimed to evaluate the antitrypanosomal activity of the fresh leaves of R. multif

BACKGROUND: Plant life is extremely diverse, with a great deal of geographic and seasonal variation. Consequently, the range of reported adverse reactions is large, and there are important differences worldwide in the incidence and prevalence of these reactions. Systemic ingestion of some plants containing furocoumarins can cause erythema, edema, vesicle and bulla formation and later hyperpigmentation, after exposure to sunlight. They may at times exhibit clinical manifestations that mimic angioedema, and rarely progress to necrosis. This condition is named phyto-phototoxic reaction.

Lesser celandine, also known as Ranunculus ficaria, is a herbaceous perennial plant that commonly utilizes piles and is taken either internally or used externally. The causality assessment of several reports provided evidence for the existence of Greater Celandine hepatotoxicity. However, there hasn't been any case report published thus far, about lesser celandine induced liver injury. Here, we present a case of 36-year-old woman admitted to the hospital with acute hepatitis and jaundice on her sclera with no history of drug abuse or alcohol consumption. However, the patient had a recent histo

Understanding within-flock variation in parasite exposure can underpin more targeted and sustainable control strategies. However, for Fasciola hepatica, the extent and drivers of such variation remain poorly understood, despite transmission requiring an intermediate host snail and therefore being inherently heterogeneous within grazing environments. This study investigated whether faecal plant DNA metabarcoding could identify dietary signatures associated with recent F. hepatica exposure in first-season grazing lambs. A total of 157 lambs from two commercial sheep farms in Wales, grazing land

Hyporheic zones are increasingly thought of as natural bioreactors, capable of transforming and attenuating groundwater pollutants present in diffuse baseflow. An underappreciated scenario in the understanding of contaminant fate in hyporheic zones is the interaction between point-source trichloroethene (TCE) plumes and ubiquitous, non-point source pollutants such as nitrate. This study aims to conceptualise critical biogeochemical gradients in the hyporheic zone which govern the export potential of these redox-sensitive pollutants from carbon-poor, oxic aquifers. Within the TCE plume discharg

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis and chronic actinic dermatitis are frequently observed among florists and gardeners due to exposure to potentially allergenic plants and plant products. Tulipalin A, an alpha-methylene-gamma-butyrolactone, is a common allergen synthesized by Tulipa genera, but its natural occurrence across Plantae remains unexplored.
RESULTS: Here, we demonstrated the secondary electrospray ionization coupled Orbitrap mass spectrometry (SESI-Orbitrap MS) methodology for quantifying tulipalin A release from plants upon injury. By outlining temperature treatment, homogeni

Blisters are skin lesions characterized by accumulation of fluid between the layers of the skin. Their severity varies from the common blisters caused by friction to severe autoimmune and congenital bullous disorders, some of them currently without treatment in conventional medicine or requiring drugs with potentially severe side-effects. This article reports cases of blistering diseases successfully treated with homeopathic medicines, which represent an alternative for the treatment of such disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The varicella zoster virus, which also causes chicken pox in unvaccinated individuals, is the cause of herpes zoster. Vaccinated individuals with partial protection acquired against the virus during a previous chicken pox episode may be susceptible to herpes zoster. When affected by chicken pox, the virus lodges in the posterior nerve root ganglion. From then on, anytime the patient encounters a decrease in cell-mediated immunity during their lifetime, the patient is at a risk of developing an acute eruption that appears like tense vesicles and occurs in groups with surrounding e
