Chromatic pupillometry for the characterization of the pupillary light reflex in Octodon degus.

The common degu (Octodon degus) is an emerging model in biomedical science research due to its longevity and propensity to develop human-like conditions. However, there is a lack of standardized techniques for this non-traditional laboratory animal. In an effort to characterize the model, we developed a chromatic pupillometry setup and analysis protocol to characterize the pupillary light reflex (PLR) in our animals. The PLR is a biomarker to detect early signs for central nervous system deterioration. Chromatic pupillometry is a non-invasive and anesthesia-free method that can evaluate differ

Vestibulo-sympathetic Reflex and Pupillary Responses Elicited by Vertical Semicircular Canal Stimulation.

The vestibulo-sympathetic reflex has been studied mainly using horizontal semicircular canal and otolith stimulation, whereas the autonomic role of the vertical canals remains unclear. We quantified cardiovascular and pupillary responses to vertical canal stimulation and compared stimulus-frequency-locked pupil oscillations between vertical and horizontal rotations in 18 healthy adults. Vertical stimulation used a 70°-tilted rotary chair aligning the vertical canal planes with the earth-horizontal axis. Participants underwent sinusoidal harmonic acceleration at 0.08, 0.16, and 0.64 Hz and the

Model-based comparison of latency estimation methods for the pupillary light reflex.

Accurate estimation of pupillary light reflex (PLR) latency is important in clinical and research settings, yet reported results are often difficult to compare due to differences in hardware, sampling rates, and analysis methods. This study introduces a systematic and reproducible benchmark for evaluating PLR latency estimation algorithms using synthetic data with known ground-truth latency. Synthetic pupillograms were generated using an established dynamic model of the PLR, extended to handle short light impulses. Five commonly used latency estimation methods were evaluated under these condit

Differences in pupillary light reflex between optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the differences in pupillary light reflex (PLR) between the acute and chronic phases of optic neuritis (ON) and nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). METHODS: The study included 30 patients with ON and 22 patients with NAION whose PLR were measured by a dynamic pupillometer (PLR-200; NeurOptics Inc., Irvine, USA). Age-matched controls included 58 healthy individuals with normal vision and optic nerve function. Pupil diameters, latency, constriction ratio, constriction velocity and dilation velocity were noted. The differences in PLR measurements wer

Normative Values for Pupillary Light Reflex Metrics Among Healthy Service Academy Cadets.

INTRODUCTION: Assessments of the pupil's response to light have long been an integral part of neurologic examinations. More recently, the pupillary light reflex (PLR) has shown promise as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury. However, to date, few large-scale normative data are available for comparison and reference, particularly, in military service members. The purpose of this study was to report normative values for eight PLR measurements among healthy service academy cadets based on sex, age, sleep, race, ethnicity, anisocoria, and concussion history. Pupil cycle induction test: a way of evaluating the pupillary light reflex.

The Pupil Cycle Induction Test (PCIT) described here is a simple and sensitive clinical method for the evaluation of afferent pupillary defect. It assesses the difficulty in setting up regular and sustained light-induced pupil oscillations, in contrast to methods assessing the light reflex by timing the oscillations. PCIT was applied to 186 presumably normal eyes (with normal visual acuity and normal fundi). In ten eyes, sustained oscillations could not be induced; further investigation showed that four of these eyes had altered visual-evoked response. The test was also carried out in 34 patie

A role for the outer retina in development of the intrinsic pupillary light reflex in mice.

Mice do not require the brain in order to maintain constricted pupils. However, little is known about this intrinsic pupillary light reflex (iPLR) beyond a requirement for melanopsin in the iris and an intact retinal ciliary marginal zone (CMZ). Here, we study the mouse iPLR in vitro and examine a potential role for outer retina (rods and cones) in this response. In wild-type mice the iPLR was absent at postnatal day 17 (P17), developing progressively from P21-P49. However, the iPLR only achieved ∼ 30% of the wild-type constriction in adult mice with severe outer retinal degeneration (rd and r

Morphine-induced mydriasis and inhibition of pupillary light reflex and fluctuations in the cat.

Morphine has species-characteristic effects on pupillary size The effects of morphine on pupillary size, fluctuations and the light reflex were tested with an infrared video pupillometer in the gallamine-paralyzed cat. Compared with saline or base-line responses, i.v. morphine (0.06-1.5 mg/kg) caused a dose-related decrease in the light reflex and fluctuations but increased pupil size. Naloxone (1-100 micrograms/kg i.v.), injected 1 h after morphine, reversed all pupillary effects. Levorphanol (0.5 mg/kg i.v.) had pupillary actions like those of morphine, but dextrophan (0.5 mg/kg i.v.) was in

Efferent discharge patterns in the ciliary nerve of rabbits and the pupillary light reflex.

Unitary discharges in the efferent ciliary nerves were studied in cervical sympathectomized rabbits. In all, 279 units were recorded and categorized, except 7 units, into the following 3 types from their responses to photic and other stimuli, i.e. type A (170 units), type B (42 units) and type C (60 units). Type A units were characterized by exhibiting excitatory response to ipsilateral eye illumination and the response was closely related to the luminance level. The type A was further classified into AI (excitation), AII (no change) and AIII (inhibition) on the basis of the response to contra

Pupillary Reflex for Evaluation of Thoracic Paravertebral Block: A Prospective Observational Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Although thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) is recommended in major breast surgery, there is no gold standard to assess the success of TPVB. Pupillary dilation reflex (PDR) is the variation of the pupillary diameter after a noxious stimulus. The objective was to evaluate the feasibility of recording the PDR to assess analgesia in an anesthetized thoracic dermatome after TPVB. METHODS: This prospective, observational, single-center study included 32 patients requiring breast surgery under general anesthesia and TPVB. TPVB was performed before surgery under ultrasound guidance with

[Feature extraction and pupil size detection of pupillary light reflex in opiate addicts].

An effective algorithm for detecting pupil size based on image processing was established. Three features reflecting differences between opiate addicts and normal subjects in pupillary light reflex were extracted by applying this algorithm, including absolute amplitude of contraction (AAC), relative amplitude of contraction (RAC) and slope of contraction velocity (SCV). Effects of addiction, sex, myopia, aging, sleep deprivation on the three features were studied. None of three features was found significant differences between sexes, myopia, sleep deprived and normal subjects. Only RAC increa

Possibilities of simultaneous analysis of phasic pupillary light reflex and visual evoked potentials.

A report of first results of a simultaneous analysis of the phasic pupillary light reflex and visual evoked potentials (VEP). It is shown that combination of pupillography with VEP analysis can be of some use in the diagnosis of conductive defects of the optic nerve (e.g. optic neuritis). Furthermore, the simultaneous analysis allows distinction between subclinical disturbances of the afferent and efferent arcs of the pupillary light reflex. Assuming a lesion of the afferent arc secondary to damage to the optic nerve, an increase of both the pupillomotor and the VEP latencies is seen. With les

A role for the ciliary marginal zone in the melanopsin-dependent intrinsic pupillary light reflex.

Maintenance of pupillary constriction in light-adapted rodents has traditionally been thought to involve a reflex between retina, brain and iris, with recent work identifying the melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) as the major conduits for retinal input to the brain. There is also a less well-understood phenomenon whereby the iris of some mammals, including mice, will constrict to light when either the eye, or the iris itself is physically isolated from the brain. The intrinsic pupillary light reflex (iPLR) is the term given to pupil constriction

Spectral dependency of the human pupillary light reflex. Influences of pre-adaptation and chronotype.

Non-visual photoreceptors (ipRGCs) and rods both exert a strong influence on the human pupil, yet pupil models regularly use cone-derived sensitivity as their basis. This inconsistency is further exacerbated by the fact that circadian effects can modulate the wavelength sensitivity. We assessed the pupillary reaction to narrowband light stimuli in the mesopic range. Pupil size for eighty-three healthy participants with normal color vision was measured in nine experimental protocols with varying series of continuous or discontinuous light stimuli under Ganzfeld conditions, presented after 90 se
