Post-traumatic Symptoms Among Ukrainian Refugee Minors and their Caregivers: A Descriptive Screening Study in Polish Refugee Camps.

The ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine has led to the large-scale displacement of civilians, many of whom have sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Poland. To assess the occurrence of post-traumatic stress (PTS) and other psychosocial symptoms among Ukrainian refugee children, adolescents, and adults, a cross-sectional screening study was conducted in refugee camps in Krakow between August and October 2022. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Data collection employed validated tools, including the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS), the Pediatric Symptom C

Heat and Dust Impacts on the Health of Refugees in Zaatari Refugee Camp.

Climate-linked heatwaves and dust storms can exacerbate non-communicable disease (NCD) morbidity, yet quantitative evidence from displacement settings remains limited. We assessed short-term impacts of heat and dust events on symptom burden among Syrian refugees with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Jordan's Zaatari Camp. We conducted a prospective study of 660 adults receiving care at King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Clinics (KS-Relief) clinics in Zaatari across three periods aligned to seasonal heatwaves. Self-reported symptoms following heatwaves and dust storms were collected via

Drought and armed conflict as drivers of overcrowding in Sudan's refugee camps.

Forced migration is a result of variable changes, including human-made factors, environmental factors or both. Climate change has been a significant cause of increased forced migration in Sudan. The prolonged drought attributed to climate change affects Sudanese citizens, with 80% of the population relying on agriculture and pastoralism as their main source of income. Since April 2023, the conflict has displaced over 14.5 million people. Four million have sought safety in neighbouring countries. The refugee camps lack essential resources, and the displaced people face a health crisis, with out

Impediments to use of oral contraceptives among refugee women in camps, Jordan.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess factors related to oral contraceptive (OC) use among refugee married women in the age range 18-50 years, residing in refugee camps in Jordan. METHODS: A face-to-face questionnaire was completed by 425 women, who had used OCs at least once in their lifetime as a contraceptive method. Data were collected between November 2016 and January 2017. RESULTS: About 45 percent of women preferred OCs as a contraceptive method. Most (80 percent) women thought OCs were effective, while 68.5 percent were concerned about their safety. About 10.6 percent women became p

Epidemiology of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Afghan refugee camps in northwest Pakistan.

During November and December 1998, 16 Afghan refugee camps were surveyed for anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Prevalence of active lesions and scars amongst the population was 2.7% and 2.4%, respectively. Between camps the prevalence of active lesions varied from 0.3 to 8.8% and that of scars from 0.3 to 5.8%. Random-effects logistic regression indicated that risk of active ACL was associated with age but not gender. This model also indicated a significant clustering at the household level. The average annual force of ACL infection was estimated to be 0.046 per year (4.6 cases/1000

Factors affecting child marriage and contraceptive use among Rohingya girls in refugee camps.

Background: Rohingya girls living in the refugee camps in Bangladesh are disproportionately vulnerable to child marriages and teenage pregnancies. This study examines the factors affecting child marriage and contraceptive use among Rohingya girls who have experienced child marriages. Methods: We collected and analysed quantitative and qualitative data from adolescent Rohingya girls (age 10-19 years) who experienced child marriages. The quantitative data (n=96) came from a cross-sectional survey, and the qualitative data (n=18) from in-depth interviews conducted in the world's largest refugee c

Asthma prevalence in children living in villages, cities and refugee camps in Palestine.

Previous studies have suggested that asthma prevalence is generally lower in the Middle East than in more developed countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and severity of asthma and asthma symptoms in schoolchildren in the Ramallah District in Palestine. In the autumn of 2000, 3,382 schoolchildren aged 6-12 yrs were surveyed in 12 schools, using the International Study for Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)-phase III, parents-administered translated questionnaire. The crude prevalence rates for "wheezing-ever", "wheezing in the previous 12 months", and "physi

Serological survey of human cysticercosis in Irianese refugee camps in Papua New Guinea.

In 1984, over 10,000 refugees left the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya, and thus possibly imported Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis into Papua New Guinea, which was believed to be free of T. solium until 1966. In a serological survey carried out in 1986, 50 refugees originating from areas endemic for T. solium and 171 patients from other areas with symptoms suggesting the possibility of cysticercosis were examined. As a sensitive prescreening technique an ELISA was used with a crude antigen extract obtained from T. solium metacestodes of pig origin. Of 221 persons investigated, 79 (36%)

Evaluation of a short-term medical mission to Syrian refugee camps in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The escalating political and humanitarian crisis in Syria has left thousands detained, killed or displaced in neighboring countries. Given the permission and co-operation of the Turkish health authorities, a short-term medical mission to the Syrian refugee camps in the Hatay province was arranged. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess this mission's impact and potential expansion to serve other more emergently inflicted areas both inside and outside the Syrian borders, an evaluation was conducted via survey questionnaire of participating physicians. RESULTS: While almost all responden

Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis at a Vietnamese refugee camp in Florida.

During the summer of 1975 an ongoing outbreak of conjunctivitis occurred among Vietnamese refugees temporarily housed at a U.S. mainland camp. Twenty-two per cent of surveyed refugees gave a history of the disease and 10% were documented as having clinical conjunctivitis at the time of the survey. Fifty-six per cent of documented cases were in children less than 10 years of age. The attack rate among American camp personnel was 4%. Comprehensive microbiologic analysis revealed multiple potential pathogens in most cases, but the recovery of adenovirus 8 (AV8) in 81% of cases cultured within two

Delivery of canine rabies vaccination programme in Kutupalong-Balukhali refugee camps, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Rabies causes over 60,000 deaths annually, primarily among children, with dog bites responsible for nearly all human cases. Although mass dog vaccination is effective in low-resource settings, structured campaigns have rarely been implemented in refugee camps, where unmanaged dog populations and limited access to post-exposure prophylaxis heighten rabies risk. This study aimed to demonstrate the possibility of delivering systematic mass dog vaccination within a short operational timeframe in a humanitarian setting and to assess community perceptions of rabies risk and prevention.

Chickenpox Outbreaks in Three Refugee Camps on Mainland Greece, 2016-2017: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Displaced populations face disproportionately high risk of communicable disease outbreaks given the strains of travel, health care circumstances in their country of origin, and limited access to health care in receiving countries. STUDY OBJECTIVE: Understanding the role of demographic characteristics in outbreaks is important for timely and efficient control measures. Accordingly, this study assesses chickenpox outbreaks in three large refugee camps on mainland Greece from 2016 - 2017, using clinical line-list data from Médecins du Monde (MdM) clinics. METHODS: Clinical line-li

Evaluation of psychological reactions among teenage married girls in Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan.

INTRODUCTION: Girls married at an early age are more likely to be victims of violence from their husbands or their in-laws. This may lead them to experience mental problems such as post-traumatic stress, depression, and/or anxiety. There are a lack of data related to the psychological reactions among teenage married girls living at the Palestinians refugee camps. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among teenage married girls in Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. It also aimed to identify factors correlating with the study selected psychological reacti

Safe but broken: a critical review on psychological risks of childhood in refugee camps.

The concept of severely deprived children has recently been integrated into the study of refugee children. While refugee camps are designed to ensure physical safety, they often expose young residents to chronic deprivation, limited mobility, and psychosocial isolation. Conversely, urban resettlement may foster autonomy and integration yet introduce new forms of structural and cultural stress. Understanding how environmental context shapes trauma and coping among refugee youth is essential to designing context-sensitive interventions. A qualitative brief meta-synthesis was previously conducted

Experiences of children's self-wetting (including urinary incontinence) in Cox's Bazar's Rohingya refugee camps, Bangladesh.

Self-wetting is the leakage of urine, either due to the medical condition of urinary incontinence (UI), or because a person does not want to, or cannot, access a toileting facility in time. This study explored the attitudes towards self-wetting and experiences of children (aged five to 11), their caregivers, community leaders and humanitarian practitioners in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. We particularly focused on how water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and protection interventions might assist in improving these experiences. We purposively selected participants from

Why Syphilis Infection is High Among Pregnant Women in Refugee Camps? A Case in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Almost 1 million pregnant women were estimated to be infected with syphilis in 2016, resulting in over 350,000 adverse birth outcomes including 200,000 stillbirths and new-born deaths (7-9). More than half of infected pregnant women transmit the infection to their babies, resulting in adverse pregnancy outcomes, including foetal death, stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, neonatal death, and congenital infection in infants. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the syphilis status and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Kule re

Nutritional interventions in refugee camps on Jordan's eastern border: assessment of status of vulnerable groups.

This study was carried out on refugees who had fled the turmoil in Iraq and were hosted atthe eastern border of Jordan. We assessed the nutritional status of 325 children aged 6 months-10 years and 452 females aged 10-72 years, and evaluated the food rations supplied by the UNHCR. Dietary, anthropometric and laboratory indicators were determined. For females and children respectively, prevalence rates were: anaemia 45% and 75%, iron deficiency 44% and 64%, and vitamin A deficiency 6% and 28%. Rationed foods supplied little of some micronutrients: only 33% of vitamin A needs were met. Dietary s
