Histologic examination was made of 1,419 globes from domestic animals (964 dogs, 374 cats, 41 horses, and 40 cattle) with ocular disease; pre-iridal membranes (rubeosis iridis) were found in 98. The membranes originated as endothelial budding from the anterior iridal stroma and seemed to mature into fibrous or fibrovascular membranes that were often followed by hyphema or, occasionally, glaucoma. Surgical techniques of iridocyclectomy, iridochoroidectomy, eye wall resection, eye wall biopsy, and ab interno retinochoridectomy are described. Surgical approaches to uveal neoplasms offer a new alternative for management of these disorders. Uveal and retinal biopsy expand our knowledge of pathological processes involved in tapetoretinal degeneration and uveitides. Additionally, both eye wall biopsy and resection provide tissue to confirm tumor diagnosis and malignancy.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) is a rare cardiac neoplasm predominantly affecting the cardiac valves. Although it is most commonly an incidental finding, it can result in life-threatening complications, such as coronary and cerebral embolism, acute valvular dysfunction, and sudden death. In this report, we describe a case of a patient with aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma, which presented with sudden vision loss due to branch retinal artery occlusion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third case of CPF-related retinal artery embolism in English literature.

PURPOSE: To report the color Doppler imaging (CDI) features of 17 patients with retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) neoplasms.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen patients with RPE adenoma/adenocarcinoma.

Forty patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were examined for ocular abnormalities. Twenty of these patients died and the eyes were obtained for culture and histopathologic examination. Eight (8) cases of solitary choroidal hemangioma associated with macular serous retinal detachment were treated with Argon green laser photocoagulation. The neoplasms were essentially eliminated and the retinas reattached. The visual acuity was improved unless the hemangioma involved the foveal region. No relapse occurred during a follow-up of 6 to 32 months. The laser parameters adopted were: spot size 300-400 microns, exposure 0.2-1.0 sec, and output 0.3-0.5 W.

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease and prognosis of vision in patients with retinal hemangioblastomas (HBs).
METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive patients with retinal HBs were treated at Helsinki University Hospital between 1974 and 1998. AIDS is characterised by the onset of opportunistic infections and/or neoplasms usually of the lungs, digestive tract and CNS. Eye involvement is less common but takes the form of Kaposi's sarcoma on the eyelids and conjunctiva and retinitis that may be aspecific or caused by CMV or T gondii. Treatment with Interferon, and sequential antifolic and antiviral drugs is effective but the prognosis for the underlying disease remains poor.
