Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the uterine corpus.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) was first described as a variant of Wilms' tumor but was subsequently found to be a highly malignant tumor composed of primitive cells that resemble rhabdomyoblasts. In the past decade, extrarenal MRTs were reported in different locations and organs throughout the body including the female genital tract. We here report an MRT that arose in the corpus uteri, the second such case reported.

[Gemcitabine and Docetaxel for the Treatment of Relapsed and Refractory Malignant Rhabdoid Tumor of Kidney and Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor].

Gemcitabine and Docetaxel(GEM/DTX)are well known chemotherapeutic drugs for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas. However, the efficacy of these drugs in the treatment of malignant rhabdoid tumors(MRTs)has not been well described. We used GEM/DTX as salvage chemotherapy for relapsed and refractory MRTs, including 2 patients with malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney(MRTK)and 2 with atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor(ATRT). At the best, partial response was observed in 3 patients(2 MRTK and 1 ATRT). The remaining patient with ATRT had stable disease. Localized edema in the field of recent radia

Adult Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are highly malignant neoplasms that rarely occur in adults. Due to the complex histology of AT/RTs, the differential diagnosis of these tumors is quite challenging and increasingly relies on demonstration of characteristic SMARCB1/INI1 inactivation in tumor cells. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old man presented with diplopia, lethargy, and memory deficit owing to Parinaud syndrome and hydrocephalus. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a T2-hyperintense and homogeneously enhancing tectal mass that extended to the pineal region. Initial biops

Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor of the lateral ventricle.

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are rare and highly malignant embryonal central nervous system neoplasms, usually seen in very young children with rapid fatal outcome despite aggressive treatment. They are most commonly located in the posterior fossa. Intraventricular location is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 4 cases of lateral ventricle location were reported in the literature. We report the fifth case of lateral ventricle AT/RT in a 2-month-old male who presented with rapid increase of his head circumference. Brain computed tomography scan and magnetic resonan

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the vulva. Case report.

The poor prognosis of malignant rhabdoid tumor is emphasized and histopathological criteria for distinction from epithelial sarcoma of the vulva are discussed. Immunohistochemical analyses were performed by using nine different antigens including vimentin, cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, desmin, muscle-specific actin, S-100 protein, AP-15, neuron specific enolase. This is the sixth reported case of a malignant rhabdoid tumor of the vulva. The patient died eight months after the initial diagnosis in spite of a combination of surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy and

Atypical rhabdoid tumor of lateral ventricle: Report of an unusual tumor.

Supratentorial atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) of infancy and childhood are rare, highly malignant neoplasms, most common in the first 2 years of life. In spite of multiple treatment regimens consisting of surgical resection, radiation therapy, and multi-agent chemotherapy, the prognosis is very poor. The majority of these tumors are located in the cerebellum, cerebellopontine angle, pineal gland, spinal cord, and the suprasellar region; supratentorial location is relatively uncommon, and the intraventricular location is extremely rare. We report a rare case of AT/RT arising in the

Fetal-onset malignant rhabdoid tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A fetal-onset cervical mass may cause postnatal airway obstruction, and ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) to secure the airway while maintaining fetal-placental circulation may be life-saving. Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) are highly aggressive tumors, and when they develop in utero, the prognosis is even worse, with almost no reports of survival beyond the neonatal period. Herein, we report a case of a primary cervical MRT and describe our treatment using EXIT for securing the airway, wherein the infant's life was saved. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Japanese woman with

Congenital malignant extrarenal rhabdoid tumor: prenatal ultrasound findings.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cancer is rare, and metastatic cancer of the infant at birth is even more unusual. Pregnancy management may be altered if fetal tumors are detected by prenatal ultrasound. CASE: We present a 29-week gestation with polyhydramnios and a fetus with a congenital malignant extrarenal rhabdoid tumor on the left neck and chest with generalized metastases. Cytogenetic analysis of the tumor cells revealed a trisomy 7. CONCLUSION: Prenatal ultrasound permits in utero detection of fetal tumors and identification of complications.

Immunohistochemical and cytogenetic findings in malignant rhabdoid tumor.

BACKGROUND: The histogenesis of malignant rhabdoid tumor (RT) remains a matter of controversy. From published reports it appears that some extrarenal RT (ERRT) exhibit neural or neuroectodermal features. Systematic investigation of renal RT (RRT) for neural differentiation has not yet been published. In this study, two RRT and two ERRT were investigated by light and electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and cytogenetic analysis. RESULTS: All four cases exhibited similar morphology and a largely consistent immunohistochemical staining profile. Both tumor types showed immunoreactivity for v

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of kidney in an adult patient with positive family history of rhabdoid tumor: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Malignant rhabdoid tumor of kidney (MRTK) is almost exclusive to children. Only 10 cases of adult MRTK have been reported. Here, we present a case of MRTK in an adult patient and discuss its clinical findings, diagnostic challenges, and treatment outcome. We also perform literature review on this issue. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 29-year-old woman presented with fever and hematuria. She also mentioned atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor of cerebellum in her deceased child. Initial diagnostic work up led to left partial nephrectomy with the pathology report

A case of congenital supratentorial tumor: atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor or primitive neuroectodermal tumor?

Two embryonal CNS tumors, atypical teratoid/rabdoid tumor (AT/RT) and primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), may be confused with each other and misdiagnosed. Here we report an infant with a congenital supratentorial tumor, which was detected by fetal MRI at 37 weeks gestation. On routine histological examination, the tumor was composed mainly of small undifferentiated cells, among which many rhabdoid cells and occasional sickle-shaped embracing cells were observed. No mesenchymal or epithelial areas were evident. Our impression was that the tumor was an atypical example of AT/RT. Immunohisto

Synchronous occurrence of malignant rhabdoid tumor two decades after Wilms' tumor irradiation.

We describe the first case of synchronous malignant rhabdoid tumor arising in the pelvis and the lung two decades after both sites were irradiated for Wilms' tumor. Although the malignant rhabdoid tumor phenotype is controversial as a specific clinicopathological entity, this case exhibited classic clinicopathological features of malignant rhabdoid tumor, including tissue features of a trabecular to alveolar growth pattern; cellular features of characteristic eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions exhibiting intermediate filament clusters, large nuclei with prominent central nucleoli, and a dual

[Undifferentiated soft tissue tumor with rhabdoid phenotype (extra-renal rhabdoid tumor). Report of a congenital case associated with medulloblastoma in a brother].

We report a case of congenital cervical rhabdoid tumor with association of a medulloblastoma in a brother. The immunohistochemical features of this tumor are compatible with a neuroectodermal differentiation (MIC 2+, Leu 7+). Extrarenal rhabdoid tumors share a common morphology but do not represent a single entity with only one histogenesis. Most of them are now considered to be of neuroectodermal origin. In our case, the association with a medulloblastoma in a brother seems to confirm this concept.

Malignant extrarenal rhabdoid tumor of the vulva in an adult.

Sarcomas of the vulva account for only 1-3% of all vulvar malignancies. Most common vulvar sarcomas are leiomyosarcomas, malignant fibrohistiocytomas, and aggressive angiomyxomas. Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) of the kidney is a distinctive clinicopathological entity that is recognized as a highly aggressive renal tumor of childhood. Extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumors have been proposed to exist at several sites, including soft parts. MRT of the vulva is a rare and very aggressive neoplasm. Median survival reported in other studies is 9 months. Only 10 cases have been reported thus far in t

Prenatal sonographic features of a rhabdoid tumor of the kidney.

Rhabdoid tumors of the kidney are highly lethal malignancies of infancy. We report the prenatal detection of a renal rhabdoid tumor with mesoblastic components in a fetus at 27 weeks of gestation. The tumor presented as a large mass in the left renal area and there was concomitant massive polyhydramnios. Though the sonographic features alone did not allow distinction from a benign lesion, the aggressive tumor growth indicated malignancy. Amniotic fluid cytology was performed but failed to confirm the diagnosis. Corticosteroids were administered for lung maturation. Tocolysis, including betamim

Malignant rhabdoid tumor: a highly malignant childhood tumor with minimal karyotypic changes.

Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) are rare; thus very few cytogenetic studies of this type of tumor have been performed. We report the results of cytogenetic studies of 10 MRTs from various anatomic primary sites. Six cases had normal diploid karyotypes with no detectable rearrangements or aneuploidy except for occasional tetraploid cells. In 4 of these cases the tumor phenotype was verified by electron microscopic studies. In a seventh case only normal cells were identified in short-term culture, but a del(13)(q14) appeared after 4 months in culture. A soft tissue MRT contained a translocation,

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney and spine in an infant.

Rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (RTK) is a rare malignancy in infancy. Central nervous system involvement in RTK is already known. However, solitary spinal metastasis in RTK has been hardly reported. The authors report a case of metastatic RTK to spine causing paraplegia in an 8-month-old girl. Since the patient was young, the diagnosis of spine metastasis was delayed until paraplegia was seen after radical nephrectomy. Thorough neurological examination should be performed for early diagnosis of spinal metastasis in young patients with RTK. If there are any abnormal signs in neurologic examinatio

Primary rhabdoid tumor of the gallbladder: report of a case.

A 46-year-old man was operated on for cholelithiasis with chronic cholecystitis. On gross inspection of the resected gallbladder, a slight thickening in the body wall, in an area measuring about 1 x 0.5 cm, was noted. On light microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations, the lesion was diagnosed to be a rhabdoid tumor. After a thorough review of the literature we failed to find any reference to such a lesion in the gallbladder. This is the first known case report of a rhabdoid tumor of the gallbladder.
