BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites are one of the main restrictions to small ruminant production. Their pathological importance is primarily related to the major production losses, in quantity or quality, induced by the direct action of worms. Control of these parasites is based exclusively on the frequent use of anthelmintic drugs. However, the resistance to anthelmintics in worm populations after commercialisation of chemical drugs is now widespread. Therefore, there is a need to find new natural resources to ensure sustainable and effective treatment and control of these parasites. The

Giardia lamblia is the causative agent of giardiasis, a common parasitic infection of the human and animal digestive tract. Although several drugs have been available to treat this infection, they present unpleasant side effects or cytotoxicity. In order to find a more natural treatment for the disease, we analyzed the effects of the methanolic extract and three fractions obtained from Hovenia dulcis Thunb. (Rhamnaceae) leaves on G. lamblia. Comparing all fractions, dichloromethane was more efficient in reducing Giardia growth. The exposition of G. lamblia to this fraction lead to degeneration

Ziziphus nummularia from Rhamnaceae family is traditionally used for sedative-hypnotic, antipyretic and analgesic purposes; however, scientific validations are lacking. This in vivo study was undertaken to verify the above ameliorative properties of Z. nummularia root methanolic extract. Various fractions of the extract were assayed on Balb/c mice by open field, Brewer's yeast-induced hyperthermia and acetic acid-induced writhing experiments. The significance of the outcomes was analyzed with statistical tests. Various fractions of the extract exhibited marked dose-dependent (p < 0.05) sedativ

Abelmoschi Corolla, a traditional Chinese herbal material, is known for its pharmacological properties, including diuretic effects, urinary tract-cleansing, heat and dampness elimination, anti-oedema, and detoxification. Polysaccharides and flavonoids are the primary bioactive constituents of Abelmoschi Corolla. Although the structure-function relationships of flavonoids are well understood, polysa1ccharides, particularly those with potential immunotherapeutic applications, remain comparatively understudied. In this study, we isolated and purified a novel pectin polysaccharide from Abelmoschi

BACKGROUND: The Japanese grape (Hovenia dulcis Thunberg) has potential as an antioxidant due to its high content of phenolic compounds in the early maturation stages. In this study, the antioxidant sodium erythorbate (CONTROL) was replaced by Japanese grape pseudofruits dehydrated by freeze-drying (FDP) and oven drying (OP), in Bologna sausages. The commercial natural antioxidant licresse (LS), based on licorice, has also been studied.
RESULTS: No significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for the proximate composition and the texture profile of the Bologna sausages. An increase in pH w

Hovenia dulcis Thunberg is widely distributed in East Asia, where it is well known as a food, but it is rarely consumed in Western countries. Information about its composition is scarce and focused on southern hemisphere genotypes. In the present research, the main bioactive compounds of H. dulcis pseudofruits were characterised using phytochemical analysis (HPLC fingerprint) to improve knowledge about this plant and support development of potential food applications. These preliminary results showed high levels of catechins (157.18 ± 34.34 mg/100 gFW) and other phenolic compounds responsible

Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., a tropical tree from the Rhamnaceae family, is valued for its nutritional benefits and traditional medicinal uses. This study assessed the antimicrobial activity of different plant parts which are leaves, roots, bark, stems, and fruits, against Escherichia coli and Fusarium solani using methanolic extracts at 1.0 mg/mL. Streptomycin (1.0 mg/mL) and 0.8% methanol served as positive and negative controls, respectively. Plant-derived antimicrobial agents are gaining attention for their bioavailability, safety, and low resistance potential. The methanolic extracts exhibit

The toxicity of the plant Rhamnus cathartica was assessed in mice after the plant was identified as a potential cause of an idiopathic neurologic disease in horses. Another member of the Rhamnaceae family, Karwinskia humboldtiana, is neurotoxic to mammals and birds and can induce hepatic degeneration and necrosis. To investigate the toxicity of R. cathartica, a 34-day feeding trial in mice was conducted using a complete rodent diet with 0, 5, or 25% added R. cathartica. No clinical signs or gross lesions were seen, and all major tissues were histologically normal except the liver. The livers o

Zizyphus spina-christi (Rhamnaceae family) is an edible plant used in folk medicine. Therefore, it is of interest to report the cytotoxic effects of Z. spina-christi bark crude extract on human cell lines. Crude ethanol extract of Z. spina-christi bark was fractionated with increasing polarity (diethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions). The fractions were examined for their cytotoxicity against human colon cancer (HCT-116 and CACO-2), cervical cancer (HeLa and HEp-2), lung carcinoma (A-549), hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG-2), breast cancer (MCF-7) and prostate cancer (PC-

Ziziphus budhensis (Rhamnaceae) is an endemic Nepalese species with significant religious and economic importance in Nepal, mainly due to the use of its seeds in religious ornaments. Its edible fruits and woody seeds are used for preparing Bodhichitta mala. Despite their significance, the seeds have received little scientific attention, particularly regarding their chemical composition and biological properties. To address this gap, sequential extracts of Z. budhensis seeds were prepared using solvents of increasing polarity. Preliminary bioassays, namely antioxidant, antibacterial, and enzyme

Extracts of 23 plant species used popularly against schistosomiasis in Zimbabwe were screened for their anthelmintic effect. Schistosomules of the trematode Schistosoma mansoni and cysticercoids of the cestode Hymenolepis diminuta were studied in vitro. The material consisted of 58 plant extracts, of which 37 killed the newly excysted cysticercoids within an hour, when incubated in a culture medium. Lethal concentrations varied from 0.8 to 103 mg/ml. All plant extracts showed activity against the tapeworms after 24 h. Ten of the best extracts were also tested against schistosomules. Five of th

Obesity is a risk factor for the onset of chronic diseases. One of the most promising approaches to treating obesity consists of reducing dietary fat absorption using extracts from plants because they contain phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids. Paliurus spina-christi, belonging to the Rhamnaceae family, is one of the five species belonging to the Paliurus genus. Herein, the aerial parts of the plant were extracted with methanol through the pressurized cyclic solid-liquid extraction using the Naviglio extractor®. The extracts were analyzed with High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography

The plant piquillín (Condalia microphylla) grows in arid regions of Argentina and is the cause of mal del piquillín in cattle. The salient histologic features of this leukomyelopathy are vacuolation of white matter and axonal degeneration in the spinal cord. The histologic lesions can be experimentally reproduced in cattle and pigs by feeding milled bark of the plant, but naturally occurring piquillín toxicosis has not been reported previously in pigs. The authors report an outbreak of progressive ataxia on an Argentine hog farm, where partially consumed piquillín plants were found in the pens
