Barrett's Esophagus in Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS; Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man® [OMIM®] #180849, #613684; Orpha: 783 ) is a rare plurimalformative autosomal dominant genetic disorder that affects one in 100,000-125,000 newborns with equal male and female distribution. It is characterized by distinctive facial features, short stature, broad and often angulated thumbs and halluces, and moderate-to-severe intellectual disability. In addition to ocular, cardiac, renal, endocrinologic, neurological, and psychomotor abnormalities, RSTS individuals can present with several gastrointestinal symptoms such as fee

Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome and Epigenetic Alterations.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a rare genetic disorder in humans characterized by growth and psychomotor delay, abnormal gross anatomy, and mild to severe mental retardation (Rubinstein and Taybi, Am J Dis Child 105:588-608, 1963, Hennekam et al., Am J Med Genet Suppl 6:56-64, 1990). RSTS is caused by de novo mutations in epigenetics-associated genes, including the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREBBP), the gene-encoding protein referred to as CBP, and the EP300 gene, which encodes the p300 protein, a CBP homologue. Recent studies of the epigenetic mechanisms underlying cognitive

Electroclinical phenotype in Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is a rare congenital disorder (1:125.000) characterized by growth retardation, psychomotor developmental delay, microcephaly and dysmorphic features. In 25% of patients seizures have been described, and in about 66% a wide range of EEG abnormalities, but studies on neurological features are scant and dated. The aim of this study is to describe the electroclinical phenotype of twenty-three patients with RSTS, and to try to correlate electroclinical features with neuroradiological, cognitive and genetic features. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Electroclinical

Rubinstein-taybi syndrome: a case report.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome or Broad Thumb-Hallux syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by facial dysmorphism, growth retardation, and mental deficiency. A seven-year-old girl had come to the Department of Pedodontics, Istanbul Medipol University, Faculty of Dentistry, Turkey, with a complaint of caries and bleeding of gingivae. The patient was mentally retarded. Extraoral features revealed distinctive facial appearance with a broad fore head, hypertelorism, broad nasal bridge, and beaked nose. Intraoral features observed were talons cusps in the upper lateral incisors, carious teeth, and

[Goniodysgenesis associated with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome].

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome is a constellation of clinical findings characterized by mental and motor retardation, broad thumbs and broad first toes, typical facies. Ocular and adnexal abnormalities are quite common and include antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures, epicanthal folds, congenital obstruction of the lacrimal excretory system, ptosis, strabismus, congenital cataract and congenital glaucoma. The authors describe the case of a 1-year-old male with the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome associated with unilateral congenital glaucoma. The case emphasizes the importance of detailed comple

Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome with thymic hypoplasia.

We report the autopsy findings in a 20-month-old boy with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome and DiGeorge sequence. No visible thymus was demonstrated at the time of autopsy. With careful microscopic examination, a few pieces of thymic tissues found near the thyroid gland showed remarkable depletion of both thymocytes and cortical epithelial cells. Immunohistological staining with T-cell surface antigens resulted in a definite positive reaction. Repeated respiratory infections present in this patient may, in part, be attributable to thymic hypoplasia. Other major anomalies included broad thumbs and gre

Oral aspects of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Oral findings in 45 patients with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome living in The Netherlands are compared with those from the literature. The main non-dental findings were thin upper lip, small oral opening, pouting lower lip, retro/micrognathia, and apparently higher arched, narrow palate. Cleft uvula, cleft palate, or, rarely, cleft upper lip can be part of the syndrome. Timing of the eruption of deciduous and permanent dentition is normal. Sixty-two percent of patients have malpositioned, crowded teeth. Marked caries was found in 36% and was possibly caused by problems in dental care due to the sm

[The Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (author's transl)].

The clinical picture of the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome is characterized by mental retardation, broad thumb and large toe, beaky nose, antimongloid lid axis and numerous morphological signs. The patients resemble one another so that in many instances the diagnosis can be made on sight. Three cases are described. The exact differentiation from other abnormalities with mental retardation is important, especially in genetic counselling of the affected families.

Trisomy 13 and Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Initial diagnosis of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome was made in an infant with a prominent nose and broad thumbs and first toes. However, due to the presence of other anomalies such as low-set, malformed ears, anti-mongoloid slant of the eyes, colobomata of the iris, and cleft palate, cytogenetic studies were carried out and the diagnosis of trisomy 13 was confirmed. Since, occasionally, trisomy 13 syndrome may mimic the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, cytogenetic studies should be considered in all patients with clinical diagnosis of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

Juvenile glaucoma in the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

A 10-year-old retarded child was seen by an ophthalmologist because of strabismus. Examination of the optic nerve heads revealed cupping consistant with glaucoma and initiated a referral. The appearance of this girl, with flat-broad based thumbs and toes, small head, low set ears, high arched brows, antimongoloid slant to the eyes, high arched palate, associated with mental retardation, and strabismus suggested the Rubinstein-Tabyi Syndrome. Gonioscopy revealed a high iris insertion, while tonometry indicated mildly elevated pressures in the right eye. Examination of the optic nerve heads show

Cardiac abnormalities in the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

In order to evaluate the incidence of cardiac anomalies, type of cardiac defects, and their impact in the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS), a questionnaire study was done. Forty-five of 138 patients in the study (32.6%) had a known cardiac abnormality; 27 patients had single defects including atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), coarctation of the aorta, pulmonic stenosis, or bicuspid aortic valve. Eight of these individuals had spontaneous resolution of their problems, while 8 required surgery. Sixteen patients had complex congenital hear

Spontaneous patella dislocation in Rubinstein Taybi Syndrome.

A patient with Rubinstein Taybi Syndrome ( RTS) was found to have spontaneous patella dislocation and spontaneous patella reduction. Clinical examination revealed ligamentous laxity and reducible patella. Open reduction and stabilization with semitendinosus tenodesis were done. Surgical treatment should not be put off because of the delay in the ability to walk in addition to the poor psychomotor abilities of children with RTS. This case is of particular interest as it represents an unusual type of dislocation that has not been reported in the literature so far.
