Caregiver-Child Co-Rumination and Treatment Outcomes in a Randomized Clinical Trial of Rumination-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

A number of developmental factors increase risk for adolescent rumination. This particular kind of repetitive negative thinking pattern often begins in the context of familial stressors and parental modeling. Though rumination can be effectively targeted with rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RF-CBT), it is unknown whether caregiver-child co-rumination (1) affects caregiver views of their child's psychopathology, (2) or interferes with youth rumination- focused treatment. The present study uses data from a randomized clinical trial of RF-CBT to examine whether caregiver-child co

Cognitive Control and Ruminative Responses to Stress: Understanding the Different Facets of Cognitive Control.

Rumination has been linked to the onset and course of depression. Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that deficits controlling negative material in working memory underlie rumination. However, we do not know which component of cognitive control (inhibition, shifting, or updating) contributes most to rumination, and whether different components predict the more maladaptive (brooding) versus the more adaptive (reflection) forms of rumination. We aimed to advance theory and research by examining the contribution of different facets of cognitive control to the level and trajectory o

School-based cognitive-behavioural group intervention for reducing rumination in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a repetitive cognitive process associated with emotional distress and may represent an important preventive target during adolescence. AIMS: This study examined the effectiveness of a CBT-based group psychoeducation programme in reducing rumination among adolescents. METHOD: A total of 173 eighth-grade students were screened, and 43 adolescents with elevated rumination were enrolled and randomly assigned to experimental, placebo, and control groups; 41 completed the study. A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test-follow-up design was used. RESULTS: A mixed-design AN

Poor Cognitive Inhibition Predicts Rumination About Insomnia in a Clinical Sample.

Objective/Background: According to the Cognitive Model of Insomnia disorder, rumination about lack of sleep and its diurnal consequences plays a crucial role in maintaining insomnia. Consolidated evidence shows that rumination is related to poor executive functions, which are cognitive control processes impacted by insomnia. Despite this evidence, no studies so far investigated the relationship between executive functions and rumination in individuals with insomnia. The aim of this pilot study was to cover this gap by investigating whether poor executive functions are associated with ruminatio

Co-rumination, anxiety, and maladaptive cognitive schemas: when friendship can hurt.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated maladaptive cognitive schemas as mediators of the relationship between co-rumination and anxiety. METHODS: Self-report measures of co-rumination, trait cognitive and somatic anxiety, and early maladaptive cognitive schemas were provided to a nonclinical sample of 461 young adults. Mediation of co-rumination and trait somatic and cognitive anxiety by each early maladaptive schema domain was tested using nonparametric, bootstrap-based resampling. RESULTS: Significant associations between co-rumination and trait and cognitive anxiety were mediated by schema d

Rumination and postnatal depression: A systematic review and a cognitive model.

Postnatal depression (PND) confers risk for a range of negative child developmental outcomes, at least in part through its impact on parenting behaviour. Whilst the behavioural effects of depression on parenting are well established, the cognitive mechanisms that may mediate this effect are less well understood. The current paper proposes that rumination may be a key cognitive mechanism through which parenting is affected in PND, and provides a systematic review of the existing literature on rumination in the context of perinatal depression. The review identifies ten relevant papers. Eight are

Children's responses to cognitive challenge and links to self-reported rumination.

We tested the hypothesis that less effective responses during a cognitive challenge would relate to higher levels of self-reported rumination in children. The sample was 100 children (55 boys, 45 girls), aged 7 to 14 years. A portion (n=65) was at high risk for depression due to having a parent with a childhood-onset mood disorder, and 35 were a low-risk comparison group. Using an impossible puzzle task, we assessed children's responses following failure across several domains: emotions (expressed anger, sadness, and negative self-statements), performance (being off-task, the time to solve sub

Rumination, worry, cognitive avoidance, and behavioral avoidance: examination of temporal effects.

Recently, cross-sectional research has demonstrated that depressive rumination is significantly associated with the tendency to engage in cognitive and behavioral avoidance. This evidence suggests that rumination may be the result of attempts to avoid personally threatening thoughts, in a manner suggested by multiple contemporary theories of worry. This investigation examined the temporal relationship among daily levels of cognitive avoidance, behavioral avoidance, rumination, worry, and negative affect. Seventy-eight adolescents completed baseline questionnaires and then electronically comple

Stuck in thought: Temporal interplay between cognitive building blocks of rumination.

Theoretical models of repetitive negative thinking suggest that multiple factors contribute to rumination, placing one at risk for depression. However, temporal dynamics of rumination and related cognitive risk factors remain poorly understood. Here, we aimed to model the time-varying associations between depressed mood, metacognitive beliefs, promotion focus, perfectionism, attentional control, and rumination in daily life using an ecological momentary assessment approach (EMA). Participants who had reported experiencing depression (n = 95) completed an intensive EMA procedure (6 times a day

Attention Bias in Rumination and Depression: Cognitive Mechanisms and Brain Networks.

Depressed individuals exhibit biased attention to negative emotional information. However, much remains unknown about (1) the neurocognitive mechanisms of attention bias (e.g., qualities of negative information that evoke attention bias, or functional brain network dynamics that may reflect a propensity for biased attention) and (2) distinctions in the types of attention bias related to different dimensions of depression (e.g., ruminative depression). Here, in 50 women, clinical depression was associated with facilitated processing of negative information only when such information was self-de

Rumination-focused cognitive behaviour therapy for residual depression: a case series.

The treatment of chronic and recurrent depression is a priority for the development of new interventions. The maintenance of residual symptoms following acute treatment for depression is a risk factor for both chronic depression and further relapse/recurrence. This open case series provides the first data on a cognitive-behavioural treatment for residual depression that explicitly targets depressive rumination. Rumination has been identified as a key factor in the onset and maintenance of depression, which is found to remain elevated following remission from depression. Fourteen consecutively

Behavioral and neural dynamics of cognitive control in the context of rumination.

Rumination is a characteristic feature of several clinical disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder, insomnia disorder). Emerging evidence suggests that a reduced flexibility in the balance between proactive and reactive control might be related to trait rumination. This study aimed to investigate the proactive-reactive control balance in the context of trait rumination. In the current study, we investigated behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants were performing an AX- Continuous Performance Task, to evaluate whether a shift towards more reactive contro

Rumination, negative cognition, and their interactive effects on depressed mood.

Response styles theory posits that rumination represents a trait vulnerability to depression. Recent evidence has suggested that rumination predicts changes in depression more strongly among individuals with high levels of negative cognition. Three studies evaluated this model of interactive vulnerabilities. Study 1 provided empirical support for the distinction between rumination and negative cognitive content. The next 2 studies investigated the interactive model in the laboratory. Study 2 randomly assigned participants to either ruminate or distract following a sad mood induction. This stud

The effects of worry and rumination on affect states and cognitive activity.

The effects of worry and rumination on affective states and mentation type were examined in an unselected undergraduate sample in Study 1 and in a sample of individuals with high trait worry and rumination, high rumination, and low worry/rumination in Study 2. Participants engaged in worry and rumination inductions, counterbalanced in order across participants to assess main and interactive effects of these types of negative thinking. During mentation periods, the thought vs. imaginal nature and the temporal orientation of mentations were assessed 5 times. Following mentation periods, negative

The effects of dysphoria and rumination on cognitive flexibility and task selection.

Executive dysfunction in dysphoria and dysphoric rumination is often reflected as a difficulty to alter behaviour in response to task demands and is associated with performance deficits on measures of cognitive flexibility. In the present study, participants were required to switch between two randomly ordered spatial location tasks in which the position of a target within a 2×2 grid was determined according to a horizontal or vertical dimension. The typical congruency effect in task switching was replicated such that interference from a currently irrelevant task was associated with slower and

How does cognitive reserve impact on the relationships between mood, rumination, and cognitive function in later life?

OBJECTIVES: Higher levels of cognitive reserve (CR) are associated with better cognitive function in later life. In contrast, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and rumination are associated with diminished cognitive function. There has been limited research to date examining the influence of CR on the relationship between mood and cognitive function, and results are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate the role CR plays in the relationships between mood, rumination, and cognitive function in later life. METHOD: Two hundred and thirty-six healthy people aged 60+ completed measure

Cognitive appraisals, cognitive avoidance and rumination as shared vulnerabilities for PTSD and depression in trauma-exposed adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are highly comorbid disorders following trauma exposure; when comorbid they are associated with more deleterious and long-term impact. However, the nature of this relationship lacks consensus and is understudied in adolescence, despite this being highlighted as a critical period for trauma exposure. Cognitive processes such as appraisals, avoidance and rumination have been implicated in both disorders separately and could be potential shared mechanisms underlying this comorbidity. METHOD: In a cross-sectional design, 280 seconda

Cognitive and Affective Correlates of Handedness: Interactions with Gender Dysphoria and Rumination.

BACKGROUND: The adversities and inheritance patterns of left-handedness have been associated with gender-related distress. Such driving factors predispose individuals to multiple mental health outcomes, shifting attention to the role of ruminative thinking. PURPOSE: The study seeks to examine the effects of handedness patterns on gender dysphoria and rumination among young adults, observing the intricate relationships among these variables and postulating a substantial influence of handedness on both gender-related distress and rumination in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional design

Another dualism: cognitive versus personality predictors of rumination in later life depression.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination, a predisposing and perpetuating feature of depression, has been linked to personality and cognition. However, little is known about their comparative influence on rumination. This study examined personality and cognitive variables as predictors of rumination in early-onset, later life depression (LLD) relative to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Participants were 98 adults aged 55-79 divided into an HC group and LLD group (including active and remitted depression). Secondary analysis considered the subset of LLD with a current depressive episode to investigate effects
