Accessory parotid gland (APG) is seen in around 21%-56% of individuals. Tumors of accessory parotid are uncommon with an incidence rate of 1%-8% of all parotid tumors. Ductal carcinoma of APG is rare, so no reported incidence was seen in the literature. However, salivary gland ductal carcinoma is reported to be 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. We report here a case of salivary duct carcinoma of APG. Clinical presentation, investigation, and management are discussed. A 69-year-old female presented with a history of the left cheek progressive swelling of 6 years' duration. Computed tomography

BACKGROUND: The incidence of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positivity in salivary duct carcinoma ranges from 25 to 100 per cent and is associated with a poor outcome. Salivary duct carcinoma has significant pathological similarities to ductal carcinoma of the breast.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 49-year-old man developed lung and liver metastasis a few months after surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy for salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland. There was no response to palliative chemotherapy with doxorubicin. We followed the biological model of breast cancer, whereby two-thirds of hu

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon malignant tumor, characterized by aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. SDC usually arises from ductal epithelium of the major salivary glands, and it is quite infrequent elsewhere. We present a rare case of a 73-year-old man with SDC, which is possibly originated from the paranasal sinuses or the lacrimal system. Microscopic evaluation revealed that the tumor cells, with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, formed cell nests and duct-like structure. A cribriform growth pattern was also seen. Immunohistochemical staining was pos

The presence and cellular distribution of key H+ and HCO3- transport proteins was studied in human salivary ducts. Immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase light microscopy was applied, using specific antibodies against the NHE1 and NHE3 isoforms of the Na+/H+ exchanger, against the 31 and 70 kDa subunits of the vacuolar H+-ATPase and against the electrogenic Na+-HCO3- cotransporter. The results show basolateral NHE1 and apical NHE3 in human submandibular, parotid and sublingual duct cells. Vacuolar H+-ATPase was found predominantly in the apical membrane of parotid, submandibular and sublingua

PURPOSE: This article describes the use of sialoendoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of strictures and kinks in the major salivary glands ducts.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-four salivary glands with obstruction were diagnosed as having ductal kinks or strictures. Strictures were diagnosed by sialography and sialoendoscopy, kinks were diagnosed mainly by sialography, whereas endoscopy was used to rule out other pathology and to locate the kink. There were strictures in 25 salivary glands (14 male and 11 females; aged 25 to 60 years), 14 in the parotid and 11 in the submandibular gland, and k

In the preceding manuscript (Zhao, H., Xu, X., Diaz, J., and Muallem, S. (1995) J. Biol. Chem. 270, 19599-19605), we described a Kout(+)-dependent H+/HCO3- and Na+ influx pathway in the luminal membrane of salivary duct cells. In the present studies, we further characterized this pathway to show that the Kout(+)-dependent Na+ influx was not mediated by the luminal amiloride-sensitive Na+ channel, the Na+/H+ exchangers, or any electroneutral or conductive Cl(-)-dependent transport pathway. Thus, K+ efflux probably maintained electroneutrality during Na+ influx induced by removal of Kout+. Accor

Introduction: Although genetic mutations have been reported in salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), no scientifically validated targeted therapies are currently available. Moreover, cancer genomic profiling tests remain underutilized in clinical practice. These issues highlight the urgent need to elucidate the genomic landscape of SDC and its potential therapeutic relevance.

Aim: This study aimed to characterize the mutational profile of recurrent and/or metastatic SDC.

Materials and methods: Data were a

Salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland is an uncommon tumor, highly aggressive. About 200 cases have been reported in the English literature. Pathomorphologically, these tumors showed great similarities to ductal carcinoma of the female breast, which is why they described this tumor as "salivary duct carcinoma." The authors describe a new case of salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland. We present the case of a 50-year-old patient with progressive facial paralysis. The MRI examination of the head showed two ill-defined formations. A malignant tumor was strongly suspected, so that a

A 40-year old male presented with rapidly growing swelling in the right parotid region. Based on the fine needle aspiration cytology report of adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, superficial parotidectomy was performed, which showed the features of salivary duct carcinoma by histopathological examination. The smears were reviewed to identify the potential pitfalls in the cytological diagnosis of salivary duct carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare adenocarcinoma of the salivary glands which usually occurs in the parotid gland (approx. 80%), but is also found in the submandibular gland (approx. 12%) and the minor salivary glands. Due to the low incidence of this tumour-particularly in terms of involvement of the submandibular and minor salivary glands-only limited clinical data is available.
PATIENTS/METHOD: In a retrospective investigation, follow-ups of six patients with a SDC of the submandibular gland were analysed and the surgical measures evaluated for their efficiency.
RESULTS:

A case of salivary duct carcinoma arising in the submandibular region of an 83-year-old man is presented. Histologically, the tumour consisted of solid cell nests with ductal structures. Tumour cell nests showed central comedonecrosis. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were positive for keratin and epithelial membrane antigen but negative for S-100 protein and calponin. Clinical features as well as pathological examinations based on haematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical stainings were important in the diagnosis of this case.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) was first described by Kleinsesser in 1968 and was classified as an independent entity by the 1991 Revised World Health Organization. It is a rare but highly malignant tumor. We reviewed pathology in 49 cases of salivary adenocarcinoma, and diagnosed 6 cases as SDC. All had a rapidly enlarged mass in the parotid gland. All were men, and 4 involved facial palsy and metastasis to cervical lymph nodes. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was conducted in 3 cases, but none was diagnosed as SDC. Two had chemotherapy, but showed no effect. All underwent surgery, but only 1 su

Surgical extirpation of the affected gland has been necessary for cases of sialolithiasis in which the stone cannot be removed by dilatation or dissection of the salivary duct. The ability of the piezoelectric lithotripter to deliver shockwaves to a small focus makes extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy of salivary gland stones potentially safe. Its safety and efficacy have been assessed in 51 patients with symptomatic solitary salivary stones that could not be removed by conservative measures. The stones had a median diameter of 8 (range 4-18) mm and were located in the submandibular gland in

This investigation is a light and electron microscopic description of the submandibular duct salivary bladder of the rat, a dilation of the distal end of the main excretory duct. The wall of the bladder consists of a mucosa with pseudostratified epithelium, a submucosal layer of connective tissue, and an underlying layer of striated muscle. The pseudostratified columnar epithelium lining the bladder is composed of three cell types: light cells, dark cells, and basal cells. The lamina propria contains bundles of collagen, attenuated fibrocytes, capillaries with fenestrated endothelia, and nerve

Salivary gland cancers are rare in general and salivary duct carcinoma and epithelial myoepithelial carcinomas are rare subtypes. This topic discussion will review the characteristics of these uncommon cancers. Additionally, it will briefly discuss available guidelines for salivary cancers and summarize author opinions on the role of adjuvant radiation therapy for these cases.

A 35-year-old female presented with swelling in the soft palate. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) revealed pleomorphic adenoma, and on histopathological examination, it was diagnosed as carcinosarcoma/salivary duct carcinoma in the minor salivary gland, which was confirmed by immunohistochemical stains. We report this case for its rarity.
