In this study, the detection rates of four enteric viruses, Human Astrovirus (HAstVs), Aichivirus (AiVs), Human Adenovirus (HAdVs), and Sapovirus (SaVs) are carried out to assess the virological quality of the treated wastewater. A total of 140 samples was collected from wastewater treatment plant WWTP of Tunis-City. Real-time RT-PCR and conventional RT-PCR results showed high frequencies of detection of the four enteric viruses investigated at the entry and exit of the biological activated sludge procedure and a significant reduction in viral titers after tertiary treatment with UV-C254 irrad

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE), characterized by diarrhea and vomiting, is an important cause of global mortality, accounting for 9% of all deaths in children under five years of age. Since the reduction of rotavirus in countries that have included rotavirus vaccines in their national immunization programs, other viruses such as norovirus and sapovirus have emerged as more common causes of AGE. Due to widespread use of real-time RT-PCR testing, sapovirus has been increasingly reported as the etiologic agent in both AGE outbreaks and sporadic AGE cases. We aimed to assess the role of sapovirus as

Fecal specimens from 517 infants and young children admitted to the Civil Karachi Hospital, Dow Medical College, Karachi city, Pakistan with acute gastroenteritis from 1990 to 1994 were collected and screened by RT-PCR for human astrovirus (AstV), norovirus (NV), and sapovirus (SV). The specific epidemiological data for illness caused by these viruses in Pakistan are not available. AstV, NV, and SV were detected in 58, 51, and 17 of 517 fecal specimens, and this represented 11.2, 9.9, and 3.2%, respectively. An outbreak of gastroenteritis attributable to AstV serotype 1 was identified during S

Outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis occur worldwide including Thailand. Unfortunately, there is limited information since etiologic agents have not been identified in several outbreaks of nonbacterial gastroenteritis. The genotype of enteric viruses causing acute gastroenteritis in Thailand was determined using reverse transcription-multiplex polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing. From January 2006 to February 2007, stool samples were collected from patients with acute gastroenteritis of all age groups attending a hospital in Thailand, and patients with nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis

Viral agents of human gastroenteritis affect people of all ages across the globe. As a mainly self-limiting disease, it is difficult to evaluate the real prevalence of etiological agents circulating in each region. Many of the analyzed outbreaks are caused by viruses of the family Caliciviridae, especially the genus Norovirus (NoV). Most studies have focused on other enteric viruses, leaving sapovirus (SaV) underestimated as an important emerging human threat. This one-year study analyzed clinical samples from hospital outpatients with acute gastroenteritis in Spain, with the aim of revealing

This study investigated the prevalence of sapovirus infections in children with acute gastroenteritis in Monastir region, Tunisia, from January 2003 to April 2007. Sapovirus was characterized by sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the partial polymerase gene. From 788 fecal specimens tested, 6 (0.8%) were positive for sapovirus, of these, 4 (66.7%) were monoinfections. All sapovirus positive samples were detected in outpatient, contrary to norovirus which was significantly more frequent in hospitalized children than in outpatients (14.5 vs. 9.5%, P = 0.03). The mean age of children with sapo

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea of unspecified cause frequently occurs after renal transplantation and is usually ascribed to mycophenolic acid toxicity. Norovirus (NoV) and sapovirus (SaV) have been sporadically reported to cause chronic diarrhea in immunocompromised patients.
METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study (2008-2009) to examine the clinical and epidemiologic significance of NoV and SaV infections in adult renal transplant recipients hospitalized for acute or chronic diarrhea.
RESULTS: Ninety-six renal transplant recipients were hospitalized for diarrhea at our institution during a 16-mo

Sapovirus (SaV) is a major causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in both humans and animals. The virally encoded 2C helicase, which shares low homology with host helicases, represents a promising target for the development of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs. However, the inherent instability of the 2C helicase has hindered its recombinant expression, biochemical characterization and the development of targeted therapies. In this work, the wild-type SaV-2C helicase and two motif mutants (SaV-2CGK10AA and SaV-2CDE47AA) were successfully expressed and purified firstly. Then nucleotide triphosph

An increasing trend of sapovirus (SaV) infections in Japanese children during 2009-2019, particularly after the introduction of the voluntary rotavirus (RV)-vaccination program has been observed. Herein, we investigated the epidemiological situation of SaV infections from 2019 to 2022 when people adopted a precautionary lifestyle due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and RV vaccines had been implemented as routine vaccines. Stool samples were collected from children who attended outpatient clinics with acute gastroenteritis and analyzed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reacti

Sapovirus (SaV) is a member of the Caliciviridae family, which causes acute gastroenteritis in humans and animals. Human sapoviruses (HuSaVs) are genetically and antigenically diverse, but the lack of a viral replication system and structural information has hampered the development of vaccines and therapeutics. Here, we successfully produced a self-assembled virus-like particle (VLP) from the HuSaV GI.6 VP1 protein, and the first atomic structure was determined using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at a 2.9-Å resolution. The atomic model of the VP1 protein revealed a unique

To clarify the etiological and genetic evolutionary characteristics of an acute gastroenteritis cluster outbreak caused by sapovirus in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China. A total of 10 anal swab samples were collected from student and teacher cases during a gastroenteritis outbreak at a primary school in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, in November 2024. Real-time fluorescent RT-PCR was used for routine gene detection of diarrhea viruses. For the sapovirus nucleic acid-positive samples, traditional RT-PCR was used for amplification, sequence determination, splicing, and genetic relationship analysis. We als

Human sapovirus (HuSaV) is a common cause of gastroenteritis worldwide and is responsible for approximately 4% of acute gastroenteritis episodes in Europe. As reported with norovirus, patients with immunocompromised states are at increased risk of developing HuSaV infection, which can lead to persistent diarrhea and chronic viral shedding in some individuals. Chronic infections are incompletely investigated in these patients, and, due to the lack of specific treatment for HuSaV infection, different clinical approaches were carried out in order to provide further evidence on clinical evolution

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) and sapovirus (SaV) induce acute hepatitis and gastroenteritis, respectively, in humans. As pigs have been recognized as an important reservoir for these viruses, we evaluated the infection rates of both viruses using fecal samples collected from post-weaning pigs via RT-PCR methods. In the five swine farms assessed in this study, 3 farms were found to be HEV-positive and 4 farms were SaV-positive. The overall prevalence of HEV and SaV in the pigs was 17.0 and 23.1%, respectively. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the isolated swine HEVs belonged to genotype 3 an
