Relationship between mothers' sense of coherence and oral health status of preschool children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mothers' sense of coherence (SOC) and oral health status in a representative sample of 5-year-old preschool children. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) on a sample of 546 mothers and their 5-year-old children, randomly selected from preschools. Data were collected through questionnaires (mothers), the short version of Antonovsky's SOC scale (SOC-13) and clinical dental examinations (children). Simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed on the data. T

Sense of coherence, self-esteem, depression and hopelessness as correlates of reattempting suicide.

Sense of coherence (SOC) has been proposed as a psychological factor that predicts good health and positive adjustment. The three components of SOC: manageability, comprehensibility and meaning were assessed together with depression, hopelessness and self-esteem as factors predicting future suicidal ideation and behaviour in parasuicides. One hundred and fifty hospitalized parasuicides were evaluated on these measures and followed up after six months to determine their current level of suicidal ideation and whether they had been readmitted for a further attempt or killed themselves in the inte

Refusing to make sense: mapping the in-coherences of 'trans'.

This article moves from the premise that 'lesbian' is a gendered embodiment marked and put in flux by century-long sexual politics and semiotics and asks how do we begin to map not only its own terrain but the incoherence generated by its intersections with transsexuality/transgender? The author suggests that it is precisely the power of Trans to not make sense that provides it with its most provocative power to disrupt and displace epistemological regimes and asks that we shift our attention from what we teach in Lesbian-Trans Studies to how we teach these studies. The article concludes by su

Sense of coherence and health in women: a 25-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Health and Sense of Coherence (SOC) has been shown to be intertwined and argued to have a reciprocal relationship. The theory of SOC implies relatively stable scores during adulthood, however there are few longitudinal studies on the association between SOC and mental and somatic health. The main aim of the present study was to examine how SOC and self-rated health (SRH) are related during 25 years of follow-up. METHODS: Using paper questionnaires distributed by postal services, 415 mothers were followed from childbirth and 25 years prospectively. SOC was measured at three, 12 and

Sense of coherence and recovery from major depression: a 4-year follow-up.

The aim of this longitudinal exploratory study was to identify and follow persons with the first episode of major depression (MD) to determine whether sense of coherence (SOC) changes over time. An additional purpose was to assess whether SOC is associated with depressive symptoms, aggression, and functional status either immediately after diagnosis or at 4 years postdiagnosis. The study design was longitudinal; participants participated in semistructured interviews and completed surveys every 6 months starting at diagnosis and concluding 4 years later. The sample consisted of 33 adult patient

Relationship Between Caregiver Burden and Sense of Coherence in Home-Based Family Caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers often face significant challenges, such as insufficient sleep, fatigue due to aging, difficulty engaging in social activities, and fewer interactions with friends and neighbors. However, some family caregivers manage to maintain active lifestyles while providing home care. This study is aimed at exploring the relationship between family caregivers' sense of coherence (SOC) and their perception of caregiving burden. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 74 family caregivers of community-dwelling older adults who used day-care insurance services; 64 were in

Childhood maltreatment, late-life depression, and sense of coherence: a structural equation modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Late-life depression is a severe problem leading to adverse consequences in the lives of seniors. Pervasive evidence emphasizes that childhood maltreatment is one of determining factors in late-life depression. The literature suggests a complicated mechanism underlying this relationship. This study aimed to examine whether the sense of coherence (SOC) mediated and moderated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and late-life depression. METHOD: This study sample included 237 community-dwelling older adults (aged 60-97) with a mean of 69.23 years and standard deviation =

Socioeconomic Status and the Sense of Coherence among Japanese People Living with HIV.

People living with HIV (PLWH) are forced to live with multiple and severe stressors. Focusing on sense of coherence (SOC), which is a concept of salutogenic and stress coping capacity, is useful in PLWH support. This study aimed to examine the association between SOC and socioeconomic status (SES) for Japanese PLWH. Methods: This study used data from the HIV Futures Japan national survey, which is an online survey with a cross-sectional design. This survey of PLWH in Japan was conducted from July 2013 to February 2014 and December 2016 to July 2017, resulting in 1422 valid responses. The mean

Sense of coherence as a stable predictor for methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) outcome.

We studied stability of sense of coherence (SOC) over time and in relation to the outcomes of former heroin addicts in MMT. Between September of 2003 and April of 2006, all 90 newly admitted patients to a MMT clinic in Tel Aviv were studied and followed up for one year. A SOC (inner resources) questionnaire was done at baseline and after one year. Use of opiates, cocaine, benzodiazepines, cannabis and amphetamines in the 13 months after admission was recorded, and defined as positive if at least one urine test for any drug was positive. After one year, 77 (85.6%) stayed in treatment. SOC score

Fear of recurrence, sense of coherence and posttraumatic stress disorder in haematological cancer survivors.

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer has been shown to precipitate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in some cancer survivors. However few studies have considered the links between cancer-related PTSD and theoretical models of PTSD. This study considers a cognitive model of PTSD by examining the relationship between sense of coherence, and fear of recurrence to posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) in haematological cancer survivors. Thirty-six participants completed the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C), the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R), the sense of coherence scale a

Sense of coherence and lack of control in relation to outcome after orthopaedic injuries.

This study aimed to investigate whether sense of coherence (SOC) and lack of control are related to outcome after moderate orthopaedic injuries. One hundred and eleven patients with orthopaedic injuries were included. The patients were followed up 1 year after the injury (physical examination, Disability Raring Index (DRI), Visual Analogue Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory and SF-36). At a minimum of 2 years after the injury, the patients filled out a questionnaire, which included three SOC questions and one question about sense of lack of control. The results showed that a low sense of coher

Association of sense of coherence with oral health behaviors and gingival bleeding among adolescents.

CONTEXT: Adolescents experience many types of gingival and periodontal diseases, including gingivitis, localized or generalized aggressive periodontitis, and periodontal complications of various systemic diseases. The occurrence of periodontal diseases is not only related to biotic factors but may also be affected by nonbiotic factors such as oral health behaviors and practices. Various factors that influence an individual's health-related behaviors include a psychosocial construct named sense of coherence (SOC). AIM: The aim of this study is to investigate the association of SOC with oral he

Stress to stability: Sense of coherence as a buffer against pandemic-related psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Identifying protective factors in mental health-related outcomes is crucial, offering insights into the vulnerabilities and strengths individuals harness against psychological distress. There has been limited focus on exploring complex mediation and moderation models, which can uncover the relationships between stressors, protective factors and wellbeing. AIM: This study investigated the interrelationship between perceived stress, sense of coherence (SOC), and psychological distress. SETTING: South African university students (N = 322) completed the Perceived Stress Scale, Sense

Basic self-disturbances are associated with Sense of Coherence in patients with psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Sense of Coherence (SOC) theory gives a possible explanation of how people can experience subjective good health despite severe illness. Basic self-disturbances (BSDs) are subtle non-psychotic disturbances that may destabilize the person's sense of self, identity, corporeality, and the overall 'grip' of the world. AIM: Our objective was to investigate associations between BSDs and SOC in patients with psychotic disorders. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study of 56 patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders inside and outside the schizophrenia spectrum (35 schizophrenia, 1

Alcohol Use Disorder-Stress, Sense of Coherence, and Its Impact on Satisfaction with Life.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic relapsing brain disorder characterized by compulsive alcohol seeking, loss of control over drinking, and negative emotional states when not using. It has significant psychological, physiological, and social consequences, often co-occurring with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Psychological resilience is gaining more recognition. Sense of coherence (SOC) could be treated as a health factor, and individual predispositions play a crucial role in fighting disease and addiction. Our study examines whether SOC and its compon
