BACKGROUND: Single parent families, including families headed by single fathers, are becoming increasingly common around the world. Previous evidence suggests that single parenthood is associated with adverse health outcomes and increased mortality; however, most studies have focused on single mothers, with little known about the health of single fathers. This study aimed to examine mortality in a large population-based sample of Canadian single fathers compared with single mothers and partnered fathers and mothers.
METHODS: We used a representative sample of 871 single fathers, 4590 single m

BACKGROUND: Parental history of depression is a risk factor for major depressive disorder. In many cases, it is impractical or impossible to contact parents directly to assess their depression history. Although validated, multi-item instruments that assess parental history of depression are available, a single item measure (e.g., has your mother/father ever had depression?) is still used in many settings. This study examined the agreement between responses of adult children (n = 10,142) on the single item measure and parents' own responses on a validated measure of lifetime history of major de

BACKGROUND: Depression is a significant issue affecting adolescents' mental health. While depression research is relatively extensive, studies focusing on left-behind adolescents from single-parent families remain limited. Due to their unique family structure, this group is more susceptible to multiple stressors, increasing their risk of depression.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a predictive model based on a nomogram to identify the multidimensional characteristics of depression risk among left-behind adolescents from single-parent families, providing theoretical and practical evide

OBJECTIVES: To examine the diagnostic yield of trio exome sequencing in fetuses with multiple structural defects with no pathogenic findings in cytogenetic and microarray analyses.
METHODS: We recruited 51 fetuses with two or more defects, non-immune fetal hydrops or fetal akinesia deformation syndrome|or fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS). Trio exome sequencing was performed on DNA from chorionic villi samples and parental blood. Detection of genomic variation and prioritization of clinically relevant variants was performed according to in-house standard operating procedures.

Assessing outcomes following surgery for single suture craniosynostosis is important to ensure minimum standards are being met, but also to compare results using different surgical techniques and treatment protocols. What constitutes an "outcome" and how this is measured remains a challenge, particularly when assessment should include consideration of aesthetic, functional, and psychological domains. The Oxford Craniofacial Unit has initiated routine collection of parents' and patients' ratings of 2 factors that are closely associated with psychological adjustment; how noticeable the child's he

BACKGROUND: Studies of parents' psychological well-being in single-family rooms in neonatal intensive care units have shown conflicting results.
AIMS: To compare emotional distress in the form of depression, anxiety, stress and attachment scores among parents of very preterm infants cared for in a single-family rooms unit vs an open bay unit.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey design.
SUBJECT: Parents (132) of 77 infants born at 28 0/7-32 0/7 weeks of gestation in the two units.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Duration of parental presence was recorded. Scores for depression (The Edinburgh Postnatal Depre

We report our two-year experience in the endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms in relation to their parent artery wall. We prospectively recorded patients with intracranial aneurysms (107 ruptured - 38 unruptured) treated with coiling during a two-year period: 145 patients, 94 females and 51 males - mean age 56 years. The aneurysms were divided into side-wall (A) and bifurcation (B) groups. A total occlusion rate was noted in post-embolization angiograms in 101 aneurysms (70%) with a morbidity of 4%. No angiographic recurrence arose in the six-month follow-up. The two groups had a similar

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) may enhance the scalability and immediacy of parent coaching by providing automated, performance-based feedback within naturalistic routines. In this study, we examined the effects of Parent's AI Coach (PaiCoach), an AI-supported parent coaching system, on parent implementation of evidence-based practices in improving autistic children's communicative responsiveness during shared book reading.
METHOD: Participants included four mother-child dyads with minimally verbal autistic children between 45 and 56 months of age. A concurrent multiple-baseline across

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively examine the relationship of single-parent status to parenting capacity variables in mothers of youth with a chronic health condition.
METHODS: Parental overprotection, perceived vulnerability, and parenting stress were assessed in 383 mothers (308 married and 75 single parents) of youth with one of six chronic health conditions (i.e., type 1 diabetes, asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, or sickle cell disease).
RESULTS: Single mothers evidenced higher levels of both perceived vulnerability and parenting stress, but not overprotection, than married paren

BACKGROUND: Single parents whose children have cancer are a marginalized group who report less family centred care, and therefore, less quality cancer care for their children. As such, the aims of this study were to explore how single parents of children with cancer describe their caregiving experiences and to understand their contextual life stressors.
METHODS: A constructivist grounded theory method was used. Qualitative interviews with 29 single parents of children with cancer who were at least 6 months post-diagnosis were recruited between November 2009 and April 2011 from four hospitals

BACKGROUND: Time alone between adolescents with chronic illnesses and their clinicians may contribute to patient-centred care and transition readiness within this population. Shifts in the adolescent-parent-clinician relationship underpin this contribution; as such, this qualitative study explored adolescent, parent and clinician perspectives on time alone in routine visits for paediatric chronic illness.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with English-speaking adolescents (ages 12-17, n = 65) and their parents (n = 63) were conducted after follow-up visits for inflammatory bowel disease (IB

BACKGROUND: The evidence for the association between white matter hyperintensity (WMH) severity and neurological deterioration (ND) in patients with single subcortical infarction (SSI) remains unclear and whether the association between them is modified by anterior circulation parent artery steno-occlusion (PAS) is unknown. Herein, we aimed to prospectively investigate the internal relevance.
METHODS: In this prospective study, the severity of WMH and PAS were assessed in 288 consecutive patients with anterior circulation SSI arriving at our hospital, a tertiary teaching hospital affiliated w

This single case study explored the effectiveness of Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (I-PCIT) for addressing maternal guilt in a case of child abuse. I-PCIT was implemented because traditional PCIT was challenging due to the family's geographical constraints and the mother's professional commitments. The study utilized multiple assessment tools, including the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), to measure the therapy's impact on the child's behavior and the mother's depressive symptoms. The case conceptualization highlighted the mothe

The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of A1 occlusion at the level of wide necked A1 aneurysms, where there are bilateral patent A1 segments and a patent AcomA. Between 2000 and 2010, 9 patients with wide necked A1 aneurysms were treated by coiling of the aneurysm along with parent vessel occlusion. All aneurysms had a wide neck (≥ 4 mm). None were treated in the acute phase of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Three small infarcts were noted on routine post-treatment head CT, 1 of which was symptomatic (transient hemiparesthesia). On control angiogram at 6 months or mor

Modern reproductive techniques and alternative family structures (with single or homosexual parents and adoption situations) raise questions about the consequences for the growing children involved. Genetic links appear to be less important for the functioning of a family than a strong wish for parenthood; parents who have become parents only through great efforts display a better quality of parenthood than average natural parents. Characteristics of the parent/parents, such as paedagogic qualities, and the quality of the parent-child relationship appear more important than the type of family.

BACKGROUND: Data on the association between food insecurity and depression in single parents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are limited, and no study has reported the serial mediation effects of psychosocial factors in this association. This study examines the extent to which anxiety and sleep serially explain the food insecurity and depression link among single parents in Ghana.
METHODS: Data on 627 single parents were obtained through a multi-stage stratified sampling technique. Food insecurity was assessed using the Food and Agriculture Organization Food Insecurity Experience

BACKGROUND: The transition to adulthood is a critical period for mental health, yet limited evidence exists on how family structure and sociodemographic contexts are associated with depressive symptoms and psychological distress.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Spatial Social Networks and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) Project to examine associations between single parenting, sociodemographic characteristics, and mental health outcomes among 2446 young adults in the United States. Mental health was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Depress

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nursing home (NH) staff job dissatisfaction and turnover are associated with lower care quality. However, little is known about the impact of being single on workplace experiences. Guided by the Job Demands-Control-Support Model, we compared job satisfaction, turnover intention, and psychological distress for single and partnered parents working in NHs.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Employee and manager data from the 2011 to 2012 wave of the Work Family Health Network study were combined (N = 1,144) to define parents with complete data (N = 586). Bivariate tests and

Impaired psychological development in children with single suture craniosynostosis is often described in the literature. The authors' own experience was that these children appeared to have normal psychological development during their first years of life. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to evaluate if parental estimation would reveal any shortcomings in psychological development. All consecutive patients operated on for non-syndromal single suture synostosis between October 2002 and June 2006 were included (n = 66). A questionnaire was filled out by the parents when the child was
